Now I have to go buy a license and see if I still know how to fish.I was a shore fisherman/surf fisherman only because I would get sea sick.
Another good spot for shore fishing is the bays. There are lots of Spotted Bay bass hiding in the eelgrass.I will catch Sandbass once in a while.Just keep your lure bumping the top of the grass and you'll hookup.I use the same tackle I would use in fresh water. If you really want to have some fun go ray fishing in the bay. There are some big ones in our bays.Chuck out a dead squid and hang on , the big ones are like freight trains.

Florida fishing is 50 times better than the shore fishing here.I fished all around Ft.Myers Beach and I never got skunked. Warmer waters and the fish are much more aggressive.Oh how I miss the fishing there

With the knowledge that many fish tales are quite stretched, I would like to enter a tale of ours. I swear this is the truth, we left the dock at 8:30 AM and proceeded south. At 9:05 we had four hook ups. Mahi Mahi and plenty of them. As the fish were everywhere, we put up the rods and went to hand lines. At 9:45 I called for a break as I was the one taking the fish off the hook and rebaiting. Started again after several beers and we finally quit at about 11:00. No place to put more fish. Not kidding, everything was full of fish, I even empted the beer from the cooler and used it for the fish. On the way in, my friend from the Republic of Panama was sitting there and chopping of the heads of the fish, luckly for me I saw what he was doing and stopped him since the fish market won't take a fish withour the head. The bottom line is he took home about 100 pounds of fish, we took enough for about the same ampunt of fillets and the fish market gave me $245. Nice trip and I wanted to return but they were not interested. One we won't forget.

Tony, we could fill a 120 qt. cooler in about two hours. Not the biggies but plentry of good eating fish. My wife caught a 2 3/4 pound grunt, known as Key West gurnt. They are delicious and we keep everyone we caught for ourselves. Here on the Gulf Coast the fishing isn't that bad but not a thing close to further south. Good luck with your venture.

The first time I visited Fort Myers Beach I was in my 30's.I rented a bike with one of the baskets in the front.Went fishin and filled the whole basket. When I returned the bike to the rental place an elderly man dressed in nice slacks a dress shirt and wingtip shoes noticed all the fish. He asked where I caught all the fish and I told him where and that I caught them wading in the surf. The next day I rented the bike again and returned to the fishin spot. The first thing I saw, sitting in the sand, when I got there was a pair of socks and wingtip shoes.Out in the surf with his nice slacks rolled up to his knees was the elderly man surf fishing. Now I'm the elderly man and I want to go fishin.True story.

Long Beach — On April 25, 2011 commercial California Halibut (Paralichthys californicus) fisherman Steve Campbell reported the following; “At 6:30 PM I recorded air and water temperatures of 69 and 62 degrees Fahrenheit. It was near sunset under a clear sky with a West wind of 15 knots. I was about 50 feet from shore when I observed a White Shark, 6 – 7 feet in length, feeding on a California Halibut. I observed the shark for about 10 seconds before it was out of sight. This is my second observation this year of a small White Shark feeding on a California Halibut in Alimitos Bay, Long Beach.” Please report any shark sighting, encounter, or attack to the Shark Research Committee.

It sounds like you enjoyed getting to be one of the elderly. I'm quite satisfied with being "old" since many fear it so much and too many don't get this far. When I think of the mistakes that I made and how they could have cancelled getting old I sit back and thank God for allowing me to continue on with my life. Hope you enjoy fishing again, it was one of my favorite pastimes but now the plants are more important to me. We have many hours of labor to do to get this place in shape and I love doing it. Good luck in the water.

The recreational fishery for California halibut (Paralichthys californicus) remains open year round. The daily bag and possession limit is three fish north of Point Sur, Monterey County, and five fish south of Point Sur, Monterey County. The minimum size limit is 22 inches total length.

For the most part people just catch and release to help maintain the local fisheries.
As for the Halibuts I caught, they were not big enough to be legal. Big fines if you get caught taking fish home that are too small!
And then there is that polluted water around the marina areas. Who knows what's in that water!

Ante, Most of the coast lines here have a large population and many like to fish. That's good until too many fish are taken and the species starts to decline. I can remember when it was no limit and I have taken many times a large amount. Try to keep your area clean and watch out for over fishing so you can enjoy for a long time. It may come to be that your area will have restrictions also. Have a very good day.

It would be hard with that old timer. All it takes is practice.I can cast the smaller ones. The records for distance are held by people using conventional reels. With conventional reels there is no line twist and they just do a much better job.The drags are much more smooth.Since you are really getting into this you may want to try one out someday I think you'll be happy you did.

The arrival
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m161/momoese/2011-10-02064110.jpg
Fished an LC for about 20 minutes pulling salad on every cast. Then a huge Bendo and off went Moby Dick stripping off 15 lb braid like it was nothing. I tried going tighter and tighter but could not get it turned or even slowed down. This thing was a freight train! I continued to tighten the drag until I thought My new 8-6 Clarus might snap in two, then it snapped the braid and off it went with my LC. Never had a chance!
Switch to a Big Hammer that's been marinating in Crack juice for two weeks, first cast and bam! Nice little YFC
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m161/momoese/2011-10-02074837.jpg
Cast it back out and bendo, long run again, this time I go a little easier on the drag but it snaps the braid again.
Tie another marinated Big Hammer on, cast, bam...a foul hooked SNGF
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m161/momoese/2011-10-02080648.jpg
Then another SNGF, then a little Ray. This guy jumped clean out of the water!
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m161/momoese/2011-10-02093836.jpg
A little while later I get another nice sized YFC.
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m161/momoese/2011-10-02101144.jpg
Then another SNGF about the same size.
Last cast of the day came when another moby dick took off and I couldn't slow it down ending in another lost Big Hammer. Holy smokes batman!
Really fun day even after loosing my LC and two big hammers. I saw a big Leo swim right in front of me so I'm guessing that's what was breaking my braid.
Just did some research and it seems I need to use Double Palomar knots with braid. Maybe that's my problem on these big ones?

Ante, what size hooks do they use? HaHa I never had the nerve to go on a commercial fishing boat as I have heard too many tales of woe about them. Having spent some time in Key West, it was not uncommon for a good size storm to raise it's head. The seas could change in just a few minutes and you had better beware. from a low wave to sometimes over 10 foot. This may not sound too bad but the distance between the waves was often only 4 to 8 foot making them very dangerous. Still love fishing and hope to get things in order so we can do so again soon.

Judge rejects lawsuit against MPAs
6:51 pm, Oct 19th, 2011 Kelly Parker Countywide Laguna Beach News Add a Comment
A San Diego Superior Court judge has dismissed a lawsuit that aimed to thwart the implementation of marine protected areas (MPAs) along the California coast, including areas of Laguna Beach waters.
The California League of Conservation Voters on Tuesday cheered Judge Ronald Prager’s decision to reject the suit filed by the United Anglers of Southern California, according to a news release from the league.
The suit was also backed by the Partnership for Sustainable Oceans, a fishing equipment group. Opponents included state conservation groups and the Fish and Game Commission.
“This slam-dunk win for the state and our oceans is the end of the line for the special interests who have burdened taxpayers with lawsuits and delaying tactics and have run a short-sighted campaign of scare tactics instead of looking out for the long-term health of our oceans,” California League of Conservation Voters Chief Executive Officer Warner Chabot said in a statement.
Implementation of the MPAs include regulations adopted last December that ban fishing and, in some cases, prohibit taking plants, animals and other marine life, including shells, from certain coastal areas. The MPAs, which extend from beaches in Santa Barbara County to the U.S./Mexico border, are scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1.
In Laguna, the issue of MPAs has been contested among city officials, residents and local anglers. All but one of the City Council members voted in support of the regulations.
“Commercial lobster fishermen will lose 30% to 40% of their income with the 7-mile closure of Laguna’s coastline,” Councilman Kelly Boyd said in July. “As for recreational fishing, sea mammals eat way more than a fisherman catches, and under the restrictions, a man can’t even take his grandson grunion hunting.”

They are supposedly "protecting" certain areas and will be over pressuring others. At some point they will say "omg, now those other areas are over fished, let's just shut down the whole ocean to family's who want to fish but leave it wide open to commercial fishers"
How about enforcing the DFG rules that are in place already and looking at the pollution issue. Punishing the catch and release fisherman is not going to change anything.

Tony and Mitchel,
What the MLPA is trying to accomplish is create some areas where there is no fishing pressure. In these areas, the fish and shellfish populations will recover from overfishing. That will happen. You can see it at any of the older reserves in CA, like at Catalina or Anacapa. You get bigger, older, calico bass, sheephead, lobster, abalone, etc. The big old females are especially valuable because they produce disproportionately more babies than smaller females.
For catch and release (which isn't as popular in CA as in some other places), the protected areas do just take away fishing opportunities, which is a bummer. I assume they will not allow catch and release because it makes enforcement too difficult.
It is a bummer when your favorite spots end up in an MPA. It's happened to some of my favorite white seabass spearfishing spots. But when you look at the map of the entire So Cal area, only a very small proportion of the coastline had ended up in MPAs (aside from the northern Channel Island, near where I live). Most scientists who study this issue (including me), would tell you that too little ended up in protected areas if we really want to give these marine populations a good chance to recover from overfishing.

I understand protecting some areas, but shutting down ALL of Zuma is going to pressure the area north and south of it. I also think it's a slippery slope.
A couple issues I have.
They do not have the funds to enforce this.
They have not done a good job enforcing current regs.
Pier fishing should require a license even more than surf fishing because it's those people who do not know nor care about the regs and just remove everything they catch.
They are not even looking at pollution. Actually looking the other way.

California Watch
Monterey Bay Aquarium exempted from state wastewater ban
October 25, 2011 | Susanne Rust, California Watch
Mike Baird/FlickrThe Monterey Bay Aquarium, famous for its sea otters, discharges millions of gallons of treated fish, bird and mammal waste into the bay.
Although famous for conservation and its sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is also one of the largest wastewater dischargers in the protected Pacific Grove area of the bay.
Last week, the State Water Resources Control Board exempted the aquarium [PDF] from a state ban on dumping wastewater in a marine protected zone.
The board decided the aquarium’s conservation and public education benefits far outweigh any dangers posed by the millions of gallons of treated fish, bird and mammal waste it dumps back into the bay.
“The Monterey Bay Aquarium’s beneficial uses include extensive public outreach and education on the marine environment, basic water quality research, and research to determine the needs and improve the quality of existence for marine life,” said David Clegern, a spokesman for the water board.
According to a report [PDF] released by the board earlier this year, the aquarium takes in about 1,400 gallons of seawater a minute, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. It then discharges more than 2 million gallons a day. The system is open, meaning seawater is pumped in and discharged continually.
The board acknowledges the discharge does contain waste, albeit “at very low levels.” The only exceptions noted were copper in one seawater sample and chlorine in others.
Copper is known to be harmful to marine organisms, damaging creatures’ gills, livers, kidneys and nervous systems. Chlorine can be lethal to many organisms, including salmon and oysters, at low levels.
“None of the seawater samples exhibited toxicity effects,” the report's authors wrote. However, storm water runoff from the aquarium contained waste and in some cases exceeded state standards.
Aquarium officials, for their part, say they do everything they can to minimize the harm the aquarium poses to marine life right off its shore. For instance, the aquarium routes all seawater exposed to birds and mammals through ultraviolet sterilization before dumping it back in the bay. This process gets rid of bacteria and other microbes.
Other discharged water, particularly water that has been in contact with exotic species, is run through ozone treatment in order to kill any larvae or eggs that could potentially reach the bay.
And water treated with chemicals or pharmaceuticals is isolated and not released back into the bay.
“Operating a large public aquarium requires substantial resources and a large staff, and we recognize that our environmental footprint is likewise substantial,” aquarium officials wrote in a brochure [PDF] about the aquarium's commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, called “Striving for Sustainability.”
"We are doing everything we can to minimize our footprint in the ocean," said Ken Peterson, an aquarium spokesman. "There's no doubt it's a challenge."
The aquarium sits next to the Pacific Grove area, a state-designated Area of Special Biological Significance. Since 1983, as part of its Ocean Plan, the state has banned wastewater discharge into any of the 34 designated marine areas.
In 2004, the water board notified the aquarium that it had to cease storm water and other discharges in the protected area or request an exception under the Ocean Plan.
The aquarium sought an exception in 2006, and the state water board prepared a report on the request.
In April of this year, a public meeting was held to consider the exception, and last week, it was finally approved.
"By and large, this exception allows the aquarium to continue being a public aquarium exposing millions of people every year to marine life in the hopes that we can get them interested and concerned about ocean issues," Peterson said. "There is a value in that, and we are pleased it is recognized and valued by the State Water Resources Control Board."

Example:
They can enforce the boats pretty easily.I know commercial boats carry some gps tracking that will send an alarm to DFG if the boat enters certain areas.
This reminds me.Once I was out collecting Muscle for bait, your allowed like 5lbs,something like that. When I was collecting it there were two guys with gunny sacks full of muscle,I'm talking like 100lb. a sack or more.I jumped in my car and drove for about 15min. until I found a Game Warden.Took him back to the spot and watched him write them up and confiscate there catch. That felt good. :woohoonaner:

I agree that shutting down all of Zuma seems strange. There was all kinds of "horse trading" going on between the various user groups. Apparently the fishing reps didn't argue very strongly to keep Zuma open.
DFG hasn't had sufficient funds for anything for many years. It's just like public education -- the public doesn't value it enough to make their representatives make changes. One argument for using protected areas is that the public helps with enforcement -- it's obvious when someone is breaking the law -- they are fishing where they shouldn't be. So the public calls DFG, the lifeguards, or whoever. Usually they are cross-deputized to enforce DFG laws.

I know, it gets complicated. I'm sure you know that if you launch a kayak or other boat at La Jolla Shores it's legal to have fishing gear with you if you leave the reserve you are launching in to to go fish somewhere else. Makes enforcement challenging, too.

I haven't for many years. I used to walk all the way out on the King Harbor breakwater to flyline frozen chovies for Bonito and bass.
I have tried casting close to the small jetties in Santa Monica but the sand builds up there making it too shallow for the fish to ambush the bait. It's better to look for holes and troughs in the surf.

First time I saw this video. Cool. I once had a shark bite off a 15 lb dolphin once.
That Goliath was a smaller one BTW. They have been recorded at 800 lbs.
Record for biggest on rod and reel is 680 I think. I have never caught one yet.
Saw one in the paper a few years back caught in the north St Lucie river near my house. It was estim at 400 lbs. They took pics and let him go. Your shoulders could fit in his mouth.
Another amazing fact is that the winding river portion of the north SL river is prowled by the very aggressive bull sharks. Idiots run jet skis up and down there all the time.

Tony you ever try hoop netting from the pier? I'm thinking about buying some nets next season. The big guys are probably gone by now so I'll wait.

From the same pier?
.
Actually a bridge over the bay. I am sure you could do pretty good off a pier. Off a jetty would be good if you could rig some kind of boom so you could lower it in. I've seen lots of lobster in the holes among the rocks in the jetty's.Problem is you can't toss the net out it has to be lowered into the water. If you understand what I'm sayin :woohoonaner:
How about Pismo Clams ever drug a rake through the surf for them.

I do. I was just checking out a home made crab snare a guy was casting from a jetty up north that was posted on the fishing board. Pretty cool but we can't use use snares in So Cal.

At the last minus tide where I fished and took pics of the sunset in Marina Del Rey there were big clams everywhere just under the surface. I asked my friend to get a clam gauge before I went but they were sold out so I left the clams there. No way I'm risking that fine!

It seems poaching would be harder than say....poaching bugs off the pier. Are divers poaching too?

Poachers come in all flavors! Definitely divers have been busted for poaching abalone. The temptation is too much for some folks when abalone goes for $50+ per pound -- and they are so abundant in Northern California. And you can't legally take them commercially -- sport diving only. So you can't buy wild abalone in CA. Only farm raised little ones.

Wasn't there a conservation/farming program to rebuild the Catalina abalone population? What ever happened to that?
