Fugu sashimi ---- yum yum! I ate these guys only once and will never forget how I tried to time the numbness in my lips and face with how much I could still get down. Puffers weren't called "chicken of the Sea" for nothing! Fantastic flavor!
I had no idea these beasts were edible, many times these are the only thing I reel in. Their beaks are like finger nail clippers.....almost lost the tip of my finger a few years back with a big one.
Also many times these guys will chew chunks of flesh from the fish I'm reeling in or take the tails off my jigs.

Pufferfish are generally believed to be the second-most poisonous vertebrates in the world, after the golden poison frog. Certain internal organs, such as liver, and sometimes the skin, contain tetrodotoxin and are highly toxic to most animals when eaten; nevertheless, the meat of some species is considered a delicacy in Japan (as 河豚, pronounced as fugu), Korea (as 복 bok or 복어 bokeo ), and China (as 河豚 hétún) when prepared by specifically trained chefs who know which part is safe to eat and in what quantity.

People do eat Pufferfish, but personally, I don't think it is worth the risk. If you try it, definitely avoid the organs, especially the liver.
These will bite your finger off......
I am not responsible for what the kids eat!!!!!

Checkered puffer (Sphoeroides testudineus)
Biology
Commonly found in bays, tidal creeks and protected coastal waters, especially on seagrass beds, and in brackish water. Rare or absent on coral reefs. Does not form schools, but may form huge aggregates. Hides in the sand when frightened. Feeds mainly on bivalves, gastropods, foraminiferans and several other benthic invertebrates specially crustaceans, which it crushes with its powerful teeth. To ward off predators, it inflates itself like a balloon. Highly toxic; used to poison cats and dogs.

Can't believe it was released. I'm with the guy who said it would have been great smoked! I was night fishing on Round Valley reservoir in north NJ once with a coworker and caught my first lake trout. Decent fight and was good eating. No ice and fishing from a boat.

As you can tell from the crowd ...... fishing is very popular here.
Fishing is a lonesome sport...
This a child deprived of his video games....and made to fish with his grandpa:ha::ha::ha::ha::ha:
You would not believe the bond we forged.
Just kidding....soon, both of us were eating peanut butter and pickle hot dogs at a local bait store called the Snook Nook, on a picnic table at the end of the dock along the Indian River.
He had two and a soda!!!!
Me, a bag of chips and some memories.....
When we got home it was .....MOM, DAD I HAD A REALLY GREAT TIME FISHING today........NEVER SAW THAT one COMING.....
HUG a kid !!!!

My grandfather, an economics professor, patented lures in the 20s or 30s which he sold to Flure. (My BIL, an avid bass guy, has Papa's patent models mounted in a shadow box.) I fished one time with Papa; we caught nothing. Later I tried many times but only caught rocks. Word to the wise: do not confess that on the Eastern shore of MD because your audience will be very impressed and you'll have to explain. BTW, apparently "just fishing" runs in the family; Papa had the theories down pat but was known for catching nothing. Just like me.

Hey --- I got a total stranger on the beach to grab and hold a wet, greasy, stinky, snapping, bleeding, p-oed pelican while I removed a hook from his side. Think he was a foreign tourist. What a great guy! And he had a story to tell when he got home.

If you can manage it, put a towel or something over their heads. It helps control the situation and calms birds down. (Small disclaimer: haven't tried it on pelicans specifically)

When you're fishing for Pompano it's all about location, tackle and sand fleas (Emerita analoga) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerita_%28genus%29) although I have used clams and shrimp with limited success. These 4 videos illustrates the best technique.

Ed --- I only fish the river for pompano using Doc's Goofy Jigs. If the schools are there I catch them. This thing is like a secret weapon. Some of the tackle shops run out when the first schools show up.
The problem with the beach is spinner and blacktip will chomp on the jig and strip off my light duty reel fast. I fish for near shore shark too but don't always bother bringing the wire leader heavy tackle when I want a pomp, or 2.
The result -------http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=51249&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=51249&ppuser=820)
Twenty mins fishing after church on Sun and we got POMP for dinner!!!

Nice!
I never use jigs for Pompano next time I will. I have used single hook jigs very similar to Doc's Goofy Jigs for yellowtail snapper offshore here and in the Dry Tortugas.

Paperclip you say? Was it baited? Is so with what? I love shrimp! I lied before when I said I only caught rocks. I caught a few little fish in friends' overstocked pond in Carroll County (Ohio), trawled an impressive "toad fish" in the Chesapeake Bay and recently committed a crime in Brevard County by snagging a relentless blowfish. (He would not let go of my hook--shaking off the seagulls was easy.)

We have this fantastic seafood market in Jensen Beach --- New England Seafood Co. They charge $19.95 a lb for pomp fillets. They know me, so if I'm tired and don't feel like filleting the catch they do it for me (for free - don't tell anybody). And I buy some large shrimp to round out the meal. No one has seafood products as fresh as these guys.
The taste of fresh caught pompano is freakingoutofthisworld!!!!!!!
And get this ---- now and then we catch the pomps big cousin --- the Permit!
Right there on the relief bridge to Hutch island. Last one I saw was 17 lbs.
Side note: I was casting root beer terror eyes under the bridge from land at the Hutch end of the bridge. Looked up and saw a couple of kids hauling in a cast net from the bridge 50 yards or so away. The net was bulging since the greenie schools were in. Saw them dump out the catch with a nice snook mixed in with all those bait fish.

Oh of course. Peters
Good place to dine for under 200.00 for a quick bite.
The Snitzel is tasty, and some of the best shlag around.
The little French restaurant with front porch dining next to Peters is good also.
Active nightlife in the area with entertainment at each outdoor restaurant.
Super casual.....flipflops and a jacket.

SOOOO.... are you good at tying knots?:pNot intentionally. I'm much better at untangling them. Probably because my hair is midback length...yes, I have resorted to cutting but try not to. I'm also pretty good at untangling hoses but am not very good at coiling them. This poor dyslexic cannot solve a maze from start to finish but does a bang up job backwards.

I've seen Egrets or some kind of white water bird in both MD and OH but I had never seen a pelican before visiting a bar at Cocoa Beach. There were 2 wandering around on the pier with the customers. They're huge! And what big mouths they have, Grandma. I sidestepped them very carefully. If I'd had more than 1 beer, well, I might have been stupid and petted one of them. NOT!

I can now say I catch puffers instead of just rocks. Stupid bait thieves. I so wanted to put them in a box on the dock so they would stop pestering me and release them when I was done fishing 2 hours later...but I wasn't alone so I resisted. Yes, I know the law; apparently so do they because they weren't around when I fished in Duval County but are here in Brevard. (I don't understand why it's okay to shove a poor little mullet on a hook with its fate sealed but why trimming the herd of nuisance fish isn't acceptable.)

I once saw two yahoos under the bridge in Jensen catching undersize snappers and dropping them on the catwalk. Guess they thought they would catch them again if put back. Over a hundred little dead fish. An old coot went over to talk to them about it and one said I don't give a sheet.
The coot walked off and went to his truck probably to call the game wardens. I left too - hard to enjoy fishing with those idiots there.

.This is called a weir....It is a choke point placed in a stream to control, propagate and monitor Lamprey/Salmon/Trout populations in Michigan streams, my other playground and home.
I have NEVER NEVER NEVER seen larger Salmon/Trout in the smallest of puddles of water just downstream from this photo.
The water is absolutely crystal clear and flows at at rate of 2-7 mph down stream to Lake Michigan. This an absolute nature buzzz.
The air temp is about 60- 70 and the water temp similiar .....sooo it feels very warm.

Same thing on lake Okeechobee. Great bass fishing but limit consumption to one fish every 3 years. As the pollutants increase the time between intake is increased. yum yum :lurk:

Foote dam tailwater....Au Sable River Oscoda, Michigan
This is where I started my snorkeling journey.
My wife wants no part of this even after I assured her it was perfectly safe and I had done this before.....she dropped me off and proceeded to a park downstream to wait for me.
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/110357684@N02/14676837610" title="Untitled by Hostafarian, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3868/14676837610_acf066f613_c.jpg" width="800" height="600" alt="Untitled"></a>
Fish stacked up in a quit riffle in photo below.
Mix of smallmouth bass and a very few trout which embed themselves in the rocks...lots of crayfish and aquatic nymphs.
Very large sucker fish on the bottom of the river which would not budge when harassed. Massive bass in the brush and timber.
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/110357684@N02/14863227402" title="Untitled by Hostafarian, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3911/14863227402_d9b465b51f_c.jpg" width="800" height="600" alt="Untitled"></a>
.
Hittin the riffles later after I snorkeled/free floated a few miles of the river the day before to Lake Huron....and NO sharks.....I was always looking over my shoulder though.
Average river current speed 1-8 mph my guess and of course it kicked my butt.
Depth of the water 10 feet to the right of me in the photo is about 6 -10+- and fast cold clear water.
Water depth very deceiving.
However the whole experiance was very safe .
.<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/110357684@N02/14851436711" title="Untitled by Hostafarian, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5594/14851436711_d92b88334f_c.jpg" width="800" height="600" alt="Untitled"></a>
Another dam, another day of the same thing; however there were a lot more walleye and hand size bluegill.
Water depth 2-12 ft with current speed at 1-4 mph my guess.
Worms and poppers were used in this river.

I just went pier fishing in Daytona Beach, FLorida. It was about a two hour drive, but the pier has a restaurant too, and with the menu and the fishing, I figured it was worth the drive.
I ended up with 4 fish I had to throw back, 3 angelfish and 1 mangrove snapper, but the day was one awesome time. I saw manatees, dolphins, a barracuda, a bonnethead shark, a sea turtle and lots of annoying grackle birds. Apparently the middle of next month, the fish start really hitting there, so I'll go back.

Since I've lived here all my life, alligators don't bother me. Unless I happen on a really large bull gator or a female on a nest, generally they won't bother you. As a kid, we used to tag the big ones on the tail while they were sunning, daring each other to the biggest ones. Dumb things we do as kids.

Low level dam at Woodward and Matanzas Avenue, Fort Pierce, Fla.
Fresh on one side salt water on the other..deep water each side.
Conceal and carry is highly recommended.......never mind...... open carry.
After a very heavy rain (hurricane) fishing these areas are recommended for massive snook....
As well as all the low levels in the area..
Just cast in the boil at the bottom of the dam.
Manatee congregate there for the warm water coming off the canals....a lot of them...

Now is the time to fish the dams.....
The fish are waiting at the bottom of the boil of a dam:08::08:
The fish will hit on anything in the rolling water in the dam area......

the cabin was built by my buddies uncle in the late 40s or early 50s. I helped put on the roof over 20 years ago. we have totally rebuilt the cabin since then.

Shut out...high winds and flurries kept me off the pond.
The trout farm down the street made it all right.
The deal is a cane pole a few bucks and a tiny piece of bait nets you a meal for two..........took about 10 seconds to catch a trophy sized pond raised fish.
Highly recommend.

used to catch what we called buttercats in the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers up in montana and north Dakota looked like that. cold water and good eating.
also caught appaloosa catfish in the flint river in Georgia but they were more of a brownish color.
that one is just a guppy, looks like a fine meal.
