I'll be fishin the bay until I catch a corvina which may take awhile.Tried my topwater lures, walking the dog.No luck with fish but a Snowy Egret, seagulls and terns wouldn't leave it alone. I had to change lures because they keep dive boming the topwater and I didn't want to have to unhook a seagull.
I had to unhook a pelican once. Casted a terror eyes out from the Ft Pierce jetty and it never hit the water. So I start reeling in and felt resistance. Looked up and a big fat pelican had tried to snatch it while airborn. He was hooked and landed back in the water so I had to walk 100 ft back to the beach. Slowly reeled him in to the surf. Took 20 mins. Got another guy to grab his wings and beak while I got the hook out of his belly. He was lucky - hook was only skin deep. Released him to get in trouble with someone elses lure.

Yep more drama. If these watchers, keepers, vigilantes, whatever you call them get up into some of these fisherman's business it could get ugly.
As you see the lines are not clear, there is no app that beeps to tell you when you've crossed a line, and some areas are different than others making it tough for fishermen and the watchers.
I don't have any issue with them doing what they feel is right, but they better be careful! I've read some posts that are very inflammatory and even threatening. :lurk:

$736,000 for one fish, wow! The old record for most expensive fish was about $400,000 -- for another bluefin tuna. I always mention that figure when giving lectures about what fisheries and market economics can put fish at risk. As fish get rarer, the price goes up (supply and demand). So there is a pretty strong incentive to catch every last fish. Wouldn't you for a single fish worth nearly a million dollars?!

Unfortunately, I can't see farming saving bluefin. It may help a little. Even without it, if there were proper management, this could be a sustainable, lucrative fishery. This is a classic case of the fisheries scientists making good recommendations and the regulators ignoring them because of politics and greed. This isn't rocket science -- when you kill more fish per year than the population produces, that's not a sustainable fishery!
In general, farming of carnivorous fishes, like bluefin, is an inefficient proposition. You have to either catch or grow other animals to feed them. It would be like farming tigers rather than cows. Farming of fish that feed low on the food chain (herbivores and omnivores) makes sense in terms of maximizing animal protein production, farming carnivorous fish does not.
I love to eat carnivorous fishes -- from well managed, wild fisheries.

Yes, that's the current assessment.
Thunnus orientalis (Pacific Bluefin Tuna) (http://www.iucnredlist.org/apps/redlist/details/170341/0)
In contrast to Atlantic Bluefin, which is endangered.
Keep in mind our local bluefin fishery is for fish that migrate across the entire North Pacific to Japan. So it's not just what happens off our coast that is important: it's what happens to this species across the entire Pacific Ocean as it migrates annually. The good news about that record $700K fish is that it was one of these Pacific Bluefin, not an Atlantic one.

The best fillet knife is the one that works for you. When I worked in a fish market, each of us had a set of 4-5 different knives we used depending on the kind of fish were were filleting. Long-thin blades for things like halibut, butchers' knives for swordfish, etc. And don't forget a good heavy cleaver for getting through bones of big fish.
Here's a cheap knife that we used a lot. Cheap enough to ruin on mussel shells and not be worried about it. :ha:

Isn't the braid abrasive or have they fixed that ?
momoese
01-14-2012, 08:39 PM
It is still abrasive so they made better guides for the rods. The older style would get grooves from using it. My Power Pro has gotten much softer with use but still makes noise coming off the spool and going through the guides. The new braid they make is supposed to be quieter and better casting. I forget the name of it, same brand though.

I was targeting Halibut but got a Leo and a couple nice BSP. I tried a lot of things today including drop shotting camo crack wich produced my biggest BSP of the day.
Here is the Leo, about 3 feet. All the critters were successfully released.

Can anybody tell me who makes that big curved fillet knife the pro in the video uses? I got to get a decent one.
Almost forgot --- went to Jensen yesterday looking for pompano with Docs Goofy Jigs.. All the regulars, that were still there, were PO'ed at the newspaper fishing column again. They keep saying how great the pomps are doing but only 3 were caught all morning. Me - zip!
Last 2 offshore tourneys caught and released over 900 sails - again. All time Sail fishing records have been broken twice this season. Guys in small boats are catching cobia in 50 ft of water - amazing.

Those Montauk guys are insane. There are some guys who freedive spearfish there for cow striped bass in conditions that are about as unsafe as you can imagine. Currents that are about 4 times as fast as anyone can swim against, standing 6' waves, and practically no visibility. They get huge fish. Make that guy's whopper look like a guppy.

White croakers in area waters often carry high pollutant concentrations because the sediment from an area off White Point in San Pedro to Point Vicente in Rancho Palos Verdes - a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund site since 1997 - is infused with tons of pesticides. Large-scale DDT contamination took place from the 1950s to 1971, when Montrose Chemical Corp. of Harbor Gateway dumped 110 tons of the pesticide into local storm drains.
Environmental agencies are working with a group of Mont-
rose trustees to examine the best way to clean the area. They are considering capping polluted sediment with clean material.
Over 40 years later they are "examining" ways to deal with it. (We need a face palm emoticon here)

Well, they've been talking about how to deal with it for decades. The bottom line is there is no perfect solution when you have that much toxic stuff laying around. You don't really want to try to remove it, because that will stir it up and it'll get into more living things. Capping it is better than nothing, but not foolproof. For example, if we have a big earthquake, the cap won't keep it from re-suspending. The basic lesson is that it is way easier to prevent pollution than it is to get rid of it after the fact.

If people don't want to pay Federal taxes, they won't get Federal services. It's as simple as that. I didn't mean to say people weren't paying, only that paying any more tax seems to be off the table. Despite the fact that our current rates are on average lower than they used to be, and lower than, for example, most European countries. Federal funding for programs like pollution monitoring depends on tax revenue. That's all I meant to say.

It use to be that certain companies paid for superfund cleanups through payments that ended up in the superfund account. But not anymore. But the fact is everybody pollutes our environment and we should pay enough in taxes to at least monitor it.

The rich delicate flavor of the Pompano, you might try stuffing the Pompano.
Pompano filleted
Small shrimp (Devained :p)
Salt and pepper
Stuffing
Bacon strips (Nueske's bacon is the best)
a few swigs of the Sherry for the cook.
:bananas_b
STUFFING:
2 lbs. cooked shrimp
1 lb. crabmeat (Blue or Chinese Mitten)
1 c. Italian bread crumbs
1/2 c. sherry (Amontillado or Oloroso) or a dry Jerez is good
1/2 bunch Italian parsley
2 eggs
Salt and pepper
Prepare fish with head off and a pocket - salt and pepper, then stuff. At top of pocket, put whole shrimp and bacon slices. Place in covered dish. Bake 30 minutes at 300 degrees.
Stuffing: Mix all ingredients. Put parsley and onion in food processor. Cook slowly. This will stuff about 12 small fish or one large fish. Enjoy!!!!

Photo was in pm.
This is the relief bridge, but from the opposite side and underneath, looking towards the island from the fishing pier.
The day I was there the local fishermen were pulling snook with live shrimp from underneath the bridge where you see the red navigation lights, while up top (where you fish) the fellas were shoulder to shoulder pulling pompano.
The narrow but deep channel at the center of the bridge is a choke point on the river with swift tides and contains many large fish.
ME....I caught some puffers, croakers and small stingray:ha:
Can' wait to get back.
PS The bridge is a real treat to ride my bike to and from my kids house:p

The choke point is the pass for boats to move thru. I fish the Island side, and if you cast just beyond the tip of the fender you can catch 5 to 10 lb black drum. That puts the bait in the deeper channel. One day a buddy of mine had 4 BIG ones laying on the cat walk. With sliding sinker and dead shrimp rig. And now and then a 17 to 20 lb tripletail swimming on the surface. That's day time.
After dark snook hit on gulfstream jigs. I saw one over 42 inches once.

One time I was casting a jig from the Ft Pierce jetty into the pocket of the "T". It didn't hit the water when expected and I started reeling. The line went taut and was pointing up to the sky.
One of your "fishing buddies" had made a pass at it and got snagged in the side. So I reeled him in till he landed in the water. Had to open the bail and walk the length of the jetty back to the beach. Slowly reeling the bird to the beach I was determined to get my jig back. Took 10 mins and I hailed a local beach bum to help me out. He folded the wings back and held onto the pelican while I worked the hook out. Luckily for the bird the hook only went thru skin not meat.
We released him so he could become one of your fishing buddies years later. lol

Cool. I just admitted a lot of stupidity and the post got lost. Neat.
Those fish can fill up with water or air, Who knew?

Fugu sashimi ---- yum yum! I ate these guys only once and will never forget how I tried to time the numbness in my lips and face with how much I could still get down. Puffers weren't called "chicken of the Sea" for nothing! Fantastic flavor!
