There have been various attempts to restock abalone populations in So Cal with farmed abalone. They haven't been very successful. Too many predators in the big, bad, sea. Seems to be the case for most attempts to restock marine animals with hatchery raised ones.
Mitchel, so now you have good reason to drink more beer. You just tell your wife that your saving money on lures by using beer caps? Unfortunately you just have to drink the beer, otherwise it would be wasteful? :bananas_b

Mitchel ---------- the beer cap video was great. I already got an idea for replacing the blades on a small 2 blade spinner bait for redfish. Also freshwater version for specs.
Also as a teaser above a turned up hook jigjhead for pompano jigging. Got lots of split rings and small treble hooks. Funny, I also have splitring pliers and a hole punch like his. Now I have to buy beer in bottles.
If I catch fish with them I'll post.

Jacks are a big pain right now. The pompano run with them as they are in the same family. When a mullet school shows up they all tear into it and the water is full of little bits of chomped up bits. When a school of Pomps comes in at the Jensen relief bridge, in the midst of the carnage, you can see 40 to 50 rods bent over of the 100 to 200 anglers - steady until the school moves off. You can catch your limit in an hour - 6.
Half of us have boats at home, me included, and leave them there to join the foray. That time is getting close.
I was there for a while yesterday and saw a keeper snook caught - in the daytime. Much easier to catch at nite.

Some of the jacks are really good to eat -- if you like fish with a bit of oil. Pompano are jacks. Yellowtail are jacks. Some of my Mexican friends like jack crevalle (toro, down there). They dry it and make machaca out of it.
Mitchel, those videos are great. Believe it or not, there are still some boats that fish albacore that way ("jig pole"). One of my good buddies fished on what of those boats for a while. He has some great stories. The ones that make me laugh the hardest are about when they'd get into a mixed school of albacore and bigeye tuna. The average albacore is in the 15-30 lb range and easy for a single guy to throw over his shoulder. The average bigeye is often over 100 lb and can't be managed by a single guy. Instead, he'd get "*******d" -- bent over the railing until the line snapped.
Ante, that's a lot of big Dentex! I thought they'd all been fished out.
PS -- What a clever program this website runs. It automatically changed the word "ass" + "holed" into "******d".

From what I understand today's "line caught" tuna like Daves Tuna is caught by automatic poles. I'll look around for some info.

Tony, not a snapper, Pagrus pagrus = red porgy. I was thinking Dentex, which is a another porgy, but I was wrong. You'll remember porgies from FL. The sheepshead on the east coast of the US is a porgy.
Mitchel, a few people do still fish traditional jig poles (though not bamboo anymore) for albacore. See American Western Fish Boat Owners Association (WFOA) albacore tuna North Pacific — MSC (http://www.msc.org/track-a-fishery/certified/pacific/WFOA-North-Pacific-Albacore-Tuna) You are right, most "line-caught" tuna are caught by automated trolling gear, but there still are some jig pole boats.

n the past month there have been many reports of Shortfin Corvina being caught all over Mission Bay and San Diego Bay in water less than 15'. They are bigger this year over 6lbs. Most of them are being caught on live bait many have been caught on lures. I got one last week that was 21" and about 5lbs. I thought I had a barry at first but the fish broke water 3 times before being landed. Many people think that they are short White Sea Bass as they look very similar. The big givaway is their orange mouth and 2 fanglike teeth. Are there any Corvina being caught up North?

My old 50H holds 450 yards of 20# mono, so that means I can load 900 yards of 40# power pro braid! Game on! :)

Would you make it so you can release the ballon once it's out far enough >?
momoese
12-02-2011, 08:05 PM
You could, but then that's polluting and I pull enough garbage out of the ocean already. I'd just tie it on and let the balloon move the bait around. With braid having no stretch and the wind and tide pulling away from me keeping the line tight I should be able to see/feel a bite. I wonder if the balloon rubbing on the braid would pop it? Guess I can do some testing.

Ok, so I showed up with my perch rig and shark rig. Plan was to catch perch and use for shark bait. Well the perch were not down with that idea. Nobody on the beach could catch a perch which is highly unusual. I went old school and c rigged size 14 bait holder, split a GCSW dowm the middle, cut in half lengthwise and got a perch on my first cast. I shared this perch with a fellow board member from the fishing forum I frequent, and he hooked a nice Leopard shark within seconds! I helped him land the leo by tail grabbing it. He caught two more leos after that one! I used the same bait, same rigging (he helped me) same spot with no success. The Leo gods were not shining on me today. Awesome day on the sand anyway! :)
This was the second Leo he caught that I tail grabbed. The third was even bigger!

From what I can tell in a brief search, they are not captive bred and are instead cut out of pregnant, wild-caught females prematurely.

[QUOTE=sunfish;182444]Why not live bait ?
I did take a sabiki rod and caught a lookup. Called it a "lookup" cause I belly hooked him so he was looking up when he got reeled in. They call them lookdowns normally. Didn't have time to use shrimp to catch baitfish.
The best live snook bait is a croaker fished under the bridge. Also snook fishing is better at night. Didn't have time for that either. Will restart the slot snook quest Feb 1, 2012.

Pinfish --- right. But if you want a big snook an 8 to 12 inch live croaker is tops.
I use the sabiki rig with 6 hooks tipped with little pieces of saved dead shrimp or fresh lizard fish to catch pinfish, pigfish, grunts etc.
Guys who are serious about big big snook fish 3 inch chunks of whateverfish under the bridges at night. The rig I have for this is a stout boat rod with a Penn Senator 113HN Baja Special with 100lb test mono and a 6ft leader of 120lb mono. Strong 150 lb test swivel and 8/0 circle hook.
The heavy line is for getting the fish out of the pilings and abrasion survival from the cement underside of the bridge. When I say fish under the bridge I mean with the tide coming at you so the bait gets way under. The line gets beat up but you still get the fish. And a pier net is a good idea.

California's Anglers Help Defeat Proposed Regulations that Threatened
Lake and Pond Fishing
Fish and Game Commission rejects onerous fish stocking regulations
in response to strong angler opposition
Your Voice Was Heard!
Over a thousand anglers sent messages to the California Fish and Game Commission (FGC) through KeepAmericaFishing™ and helped defeat onerous regulations that would have reduced freshwater fishing opportunity.
Thanks to an overwhelming response from anglers like you, regulations that would have forced all lake, pond and hatchery owners to perform costly environmental surveys on every lake or pond that stocks fish were defeated during the December 15, FGC meeting.
KeepAmericaFishing is dedicated to keeping these waters open and affordable for anglers, but these regulations could not have been defeated without the strong efforts of anglers like you.
Congratulations and thank you!
Background
During its December 15, meeting, the California Fish and Game Commission considered and rejected onerous environmental regulations, which could have cost well over $100,000 per body of water. If approved, these regulations would have created a substantial burden on private landowners who stocked and managed ponds and lakes on their property.
Businesses that offered fishing on private lakes would have either been put out of business or would have been forced to significantly increase the cost for anglers like you.
KeepAmericaFishing will continue to monitor this issue and work to ensure that threats to freshwater recreational fishing in California are minimized. For more information on this and other issues affecting your right to fish, visit KeepAmericaFishingâ„¢ (http://www.KeepAmericaFishing.org).

Aww, going for short fins! From shore or boat?
From shore.Wish I hadn't sold my last boat sure would like to get back out on San Diego bay. Many years ago we would go fish off the bait receivers . Back in the day we would bring lawn chairs ice chest and sit on the barge and fish. With two poles each it was hard to keep up with all the fish we would hook.Lots of Sandbass, big halibut, schools of bonita and barracuda.Non stop action both poles hooked up most of the time.

No they stopped that a long time ago. They won't even let you tie up anymore. The only way now is to make drifts. The fish are tight up against the barges so your only in the strike zone for a short time.

They will be used for drop shotting zoom flukes for halibut. I'm going to try something I've never seen done, tying 3 hooks on at about 8" apart for the little school of fish appearance. Kind of like parachute rig but drop shot instead and with a 3 foot leader going to the weight so they have some height off the bottom even on a flat bottom while surf fishing. Should be fun!
This is drop shot.

Good article. Makes me want to get off the bridges and back to the beach now and then. Trouble with light tackle on my beaches is the blacktips. You won't get your swimbait back or pull in a blacktip on 6 or 8 lb line. Fine for pomps et al.
The water up close is full of them little sharks in season.

Planning to bring home some perch from Leo Carrillo state beach on New Years eve seeing how the water is relatively clean there. We are having a picknic with friends to catch the last sunset of 2011. Started thinking about how I was going to cook the BSP and found this video showing how to fillet them.
Dead fishes are cut up in this video, if you don't like seeing that don't watch.

After or should I say if I catch any decent sized perch I'm going to fillet them and make this, but without the skin.

Had a great time on the beach with old friends! The fog lifted just enough to provide a beautiful sunset and the fishes were hungry! Final count was 16 BSP and one Corbina! What a way to end my first year of surf fishing!
We brought home 3 BSP's that made a great meal! :)

A STRONG STORM SYSTEM IN THE CENTRAL PACIFIC OCEAN HAS CREATED A LARGE GROUNDSWELL WHICH WILL PUSH TOWARDS THE WEST COAST...AND ARRIVE ON TUESDAY. ALTHOUGH IT IS STILL EARLY...CONFIDENCE IS GROWING THAT A LONG PERIOD SWELL WILL APPROACH THE CENTRAL COAST BY TUESDAY AND PERSIST THROUGH MUCH OF WEDNESDAY BEFORE THE SWELL DIMINISHES SOME. DUE TO THE WEST NORTHWEST SWELL DIRECTION...SOME OF THIS ENERGY WILL MAKE INTO THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BIGHT BRINGING HIGHER SURF TO WEST FACING BEACHES OF LOS ANGELES AND VENTURA COUNTIES. ALTHOUGH IT IS STILL EARLY...HIGH SURF CONDITIONS FOR THE CENTRAL COAST SHOULD BE BETWEEN 10 TO 15 FEET WITH LOCALLY HIGHER SETS...WHILE THE WEST FACING BEACHES OF VENTURA AND LOS ANGELES COUNTIES COULD SEE SURF BETWEEN 6 AND 10 FEET WITH LOCALLY HIGHER SETS THROUGH WEDNESDAY. ANOTHER LARGE STORM SYSTEM WILL DEVELOP BEHIND THE SYSTEM CURRENTLY IN THE CENTRAL PACIFIC OCEAN. MODELS ARE FORECASTING THIS SECOND STORM COULD POSSIBLY GENERATE AN EVEN LARGER GROUNDSWELL. WITH A WEST TO NORTHWEST FETCH ALREADY OCCURRING DURING MIDWEEK NEXT WEEK...THIS SECOND SWELL SHOULD PRODUCE HIGHER SWELLS WHICH WILL IN TURN CAUSE HIGHER SURF TO DEVELOP BETWEEN THURSDAY AND POSSIBLY CONTINUE THROUGH THE END OF THE WEEK. WHILE IT IS STILL EARLY...WAVE MODELS INDICATE A SWELL HEIGHT AND PERIOD CONSISTENT WITH SURF HEIGHTS BETWEEN 14 TO 20 FEET ACROSS THE CENTRAL COAST AND BETWEEN 10 TO 14 FEET ACROSS WEST FACING BEACHES OF LOS ANGELES AND VENTURA COUNTIES. BEACH-GOERS AND FISHERMEN ARE ADVISED TO STAY APPRISED OF THE DEVELOPING HIGH SURF SCENARIO FOR NEXT WEEK. IF LARGE SURF SHOULD DEVELOP NEXT WEEK...STAY OFF OF JETTIES AND DO NOT TURN YOUR BACK TO THE SURF. THERE WILL BE VERY DANGEROUS RIP CURRENTS LIKELY ACCOMPANYING THESE LARGE WAVES AS WELL. ALSO...SOME LOCAL COASTAL FLOODING COULD BE POSSIBLE WITH THIS EVENT. I'll be fishin the bay until I catch a corvina which may take awhile.Tried my topwater lures, walking the dog.No luck with fish but a Snowy Egret, seagulls and terns wouldn't leave it alone. I had to change lures because they keep dive boming the topwater and I didn't want to have to unhook a seagull.
