Definitely looks like fruit will be on its way! It takes about 3 months for most bananas to get ripe from that stage so that means you will have some bananas by December, and the weather should be mild enough for you to at least get a few bananas.
Keep us updated!

what made the flag ?It's the "wrong time of the year"; now the fruit will wind up hanging for 9 months, going into hibernation over winter.
That's what MINE always seem to do, anyway, da little buggers!

Goldfinger. I won't feel like I've really arrived till I've eaten fruit off my own plants. Given Bob's comments (which seem accurate from what I've seen), I won't have arrived for another 9 months. Wait, am I pregnant? No, just a banana papa.

Time to break out the potash!
A good dose of potassium fertilizer will get the 'nannerlings off to a swift start.
I like to use a little [fast acting] water-soluble along with the granular slow release at this stage.
It'll will get things moving quickly before the winter weather slows growth (and fruit development) down to a crawl.
The nice thing about dwarf orinoco is that they can be used like a plantain when green; they make some of the best tostones I've had.
They're pretty tasty when ripe, too. They can even ripen on the stem without bursting.

Are those plastic pipes support structure for plastic sheathing, cover for Winter protection? Or, is that a lean-to greenhouse attached to your eaves?

Thanks.

Yes & yes.
Built from scrap materials, the plastic cover is the only thing that cost any $$, it takes about $12 worth of plastic sheeting & duct tape every year.
It's a "lean-to greenhouse" in the winter & during summer the plastic comes off & a strip of shade cloth runs along the top 4'.
(It's on a south facing wall.)
Here's the winter configuration:
<img src=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=39723 border=0></a>

A box fan on thermostat draws warmer air from under the house when temps get below 40°.
A backup water mist is set to come on at 34°, which hasn't happened in the 4-5 years we've had it set up this way.

Just thinking some are mistaking the shorter leaf for the flagMy Dwarf Orinocos don't get the "small leaf", or whatever it's called, just the "P" shaped one that has the flower bud tucked inside it.

Do I have oddball* plants, or do some varieties skip the "mini-leaf"?

* (I already know my D.O.s are "oddball", having some that almost doubled in height this past summer).

Is that normal for a dwarf orinoco to be 4 to 5 feet tall to flower ? That's what mine have always been, but your mileage may vary!
I've been chopping the tops off the 2 huge rogues; they won't fit under the greenhaus canopy anyway so they're destined to be mulch before things start to freeze.

I always thought they all got a flag maybe there not dawrfI came across some ancient pics of the the very first blossoms on mine & they both had the "small leaf" as well as the flag, they were very clearly distinct.
Now I have to remember where the heck they were again so I can post the dang things.

I don't have the slightest clue as to why the critters started doing weird ****, other than maybe the stray space ship landing... ;)

Wow those grew fast!
You must have some great soil/food and some amazing weather.

I learned a lot on this thread as I had no clue about the flag.

Great job with the pics, a good play by play.

Make sure to post in a couple days or so.

Thanks. My first to bloom. Im all excited. It has been my dream for this to happen ever since I found the org and admired all the great banana growers here on the org. I always thought it would just be a dream for me,but dreams do come true ! I got this plant from a nursery last summer. It was in a gallon pot. I planted it next to a california gold and a dwarf brazilian. I wanted to compare the growth The California gold out grew the dwarf orinoko and the dwarf Brazillian. The mother plant of the California gold died but the pup out grew the mother plant of the dwarf orinoko and the mother plant of the dwarf brazilian died after the winter too. The dwarf orinoko mother made it. And this is the result. Its only about five feet high. It has about four pups on it. Its planted next to my chicken pen. My soil is sandy with allot of steer manure and some worm compost I feed them banana fuel and it probally gets allot of stuff from the chicken coop. I will keep posting pictures and thanks again. :lurk:

Are you geared up to protect that bunch should we have bad weather?

what should i do ?

Bob3
10-02-2011, 10:57 AM
what should i do ?You are going to need to protect it over winter if you want to recover any of the fruit anyway, so may as well slap something together that'll stand up to some abuse from those nasty winds we get around here.
Luckily, being a dwarf, the size makes it doable.
To make a little mini-enclosure, I'd use some concrete reinforcing mesh [6"x6"] & roll it in a cylinder, wrap the critter with clear plastic & button up at night or during temps that get sub 40°.
Letting them stay tented in/buttoned up during the daytime might produce temps hot enough to make them "medium rare".
Hammer a couple stakes into the dirt, tie off on the mesh, & it'll stay put in the 60+MPH wing gusts coming up.
Adding a lightbulb or two, preferably on a thermostat, will keep things above freezing.

If there are more critters you want to protect then it's "grünhauszeit" with a larger structure made from PVC, duct tape & plastic.

I often threaten to tent over our entire back yard with my ebay auction income for seeds that I peddle. ;)

You can put together a frame fairly cheap, even if you have to buy everything at retail.
If you get on "http://www.freecycle.org/" you should be able to score scrap PVC for free.
