I have some pups that I want to put in pots for the winter. Keep them outside and move them in on the nights it gets to cold. How long can I keep a plant in a pot before it needs to be put back in the ground. Thanks for your help.

Depends on the pot size and pup size. 5g or 15g should work. Plant them next Spring.

I was hoping less than 3 gal. Also thinking 3-4 months. If I have to move 10-15 a night smaller the better.

I guess my question is, how long can a pup live in a 2-3 gallon container?

They will grow in a 3gal. for a year at least. I know I've had some in 5gal. pots for 2 years.

It all depends on the size of the pup and the root mass. I have had 6 inch pups that wouldn't fit in a 15 gallon pot. Have had 4 foot pups that you could put in a 1 gallon pot.

When repotting is it a good or bad idea to trim off some of the roots, even if they are healthy?

Don't think it makes a heck of a lot of difference one way or another
