Is there anyone else in the midwest that is growing pickley pear cactus, agave and other cacti and succulents outside in the ground? I just planted this garden in the spring. I know some of my prickley pear are cold hardy and they have stayed out in the winter before. The ones with the larger pads came from a friend in Phoenix AZ so I am not sure if they are cold hardy, my plan is to dig those up and bring them in the fall. All the succulents will come in for sure, I know they are only hardy to just above freezing.

When I put this garden in, I had a yard of sand and a yard of pea gravel delivered. I also mixed some potting mix in with the sand for each plant.

Check out coldhardycactus.com. There should be several types of cactus that can stay out all year long in your climate with good drainage.
