I've been monitoring and learning from the site for over 2 years now. Just wanted to thank the community for all the knowledge that was unknowingly thrown my way. I failed miserably overwintering in a dark, cold closet last year (lost 75% of my nanners), but my basjoo did manage to overwinter in the ground last year (Michigan).

Special thanks to Sherry (The HollyBerry Lady) - her pics inspired me to try growing a passiflora as well. 6 months to pop, two years to grow, and finally, just today...

:woohoonaner: Very cool!

I have a Basjoo, I am hoping it will over winter here. I am in Michigan also, around Holland over by Lake Michigan if you know where that is.

Passiflora never cease to amaze me. I have never grown one but their beauty simply, well they look so unusual! :)

I went to Grandville growing up (another Dutchman here), and worked in Holland for a summer in college. Spent a lot of time on the beach out there - it's very beautiful place. I'm in Ann Arbor now. That lake effect snow you get should make it pretty easy to overwinter your basjoo in the ground. Would love to see a pic of what you've got going on over there. Thanks.

[Photos] Stuff in my Yard :) - Plant Swap (http://www.plantswap.net/forum/f53/stuff-my-yard-15126/)
There's some pictures of my outdoor stuff on there. I will get some updated pictures soon, some of the stuff is growing quite a bit right now. My banana plant isn't in there though, but I will get some pictures soon :)

My basjoo is in a small pot and is only about a foot tall maybe. :ha:

I don't have a spot for it in the ground, my plan was to, in fact, keep it in bigger pots :ha: But I might be able to get it in the ground next spring.

My main complaint about Michigan is how some different minority groups get treated around here. It's terrible how the kids at school even are!

The weather has been pretty stupid this year :ha:

Thank you so much, Prometheus! :waving:

I'm so glad I inspired you to grow a passiflora vine. Your pic looks great. Congrats!

No - thank you. I looked through your plant collection many times trying to figure out what to add to my collection. You got me hooked on Aurora peppers too - beautiful and tasty! I figured I should stop lurking and finally made some posts (the excitement over the passiflora bloom helped). :goteam:

You're very welcome, Brad! :goteam:

So happy to hear your enthusiasm for Aurora hot peppers! :D They're just the best...and so cheerful and colorful too. You gotta show pics of yours sometime as well.

It looks like you grew Caerulea passiflora...a type that is ideal for container growing. Did you grow yours in a pot or the garden? So cool about the blooms. More will follow. :)

Very nice to read this thread today and know that I inspired a fellow gardener. I've been inspired by many gardeners on this site too.

My Caerulea passiflora is in a container planted in the ground, climbing a trellis on the side of my shed. Not quite sure what I'm going to do come fall, but it wasn't very happy on my deck with a bamboo hook in the pot last year (I tried to unsuccessfully emulate the appearance of yours). It's about 10 feet tall now. I've got a cutting growing indoors that's about 2 feet long as well.

I figured if you can grow something in Canada, I should be able to in Michigan (my thumb is only slowly showing a tint of green). I've started most of my plants from seed as well, so it's been a challenge and a lengthy wait for results. It makes success that much more exciting though.:banana_ba

No worries Brad...you can do this. ;)

Just dig the pot up and bring it in for the Fall and Winter, placing it back outside come Spring. You can even prune the vine back before bringing it in. I kept mine on a sunny window sill throughout the entire cold season.

Passiflora varieties are very easy to grow...even a dummy could grow them. :ha: So don't be intimidated and feel free to experiment too. :D

Cuttings are a great way to preserve your vines from year to year if you live in colder climates like we do.

Best of luck Brad and thanks again.

Hi Jordan, I saw some of your pictures In “plantswap.net”

You have done a lot of beautiful work there. But I can see a lot of room for your Banana plant there. :)

I live also in a 6 hardiness zone and have likewise a Basjoo, which I planted last June and wintered outside
after cutting off its third pup and taking it in a pot indoors for the cold season. If you want to know more
on how I fared please visit this thread: http://www.bananas.org/f2/my-banana-experience-lack-12904.html There we can discuss, what
I did right or wrong.

Best,
Olaf

It's not a matter of "if there's room". It's a matter of "Where will my mom let me put a 15' banana tree..." :ha:

Just show her this picture and tell that you will plant something like this in the middle of the big pasture
in your backyard. :)

She may make you mow the lawn from hereon out, in case you are not doing that already, because it will be
an obstruction for that :ha:

What you see there is "mom" with her first pup to her left and the second one behind her. The leave poking in
from the left is a leaf from her third pup, which is still in a pot. But I may plant it in the fall, this time 1 foot deep.

Good luck!
Olaf

I can't mow the lawn because it gives me a sinus infection, the smell of the grass.

She doesn't want ANYTHING in the yard. She complains about my peach tree and it's where nothing else could go anyways.

It would have to go up on our hill, but it stays dry there. So I would have to be very caring for it. Watering it every day almost. Which is ok for me I guess :)

How should I go about over wintering it when it's still in a pot?
