I live in NC - 10mins from the ocean and a huge river. I'm zone 8 and have my cold hardy bananas in pots on my porch. If I bring them inside I have nowhere to put them, with cats and two little kids.
Basjoo
Ice Cream
Orinoco
Yellow
Velutina
Could I just leave these during winter in the pots and wrap the stems in bisqueen and water if soil gets too dry? Only other option is to put them in the storage closet on the porch. Tried that with a basjoo and it didn't make it but the yellow did.

If you have a big yard you might be able to get away with just buring them all in about 2-3 feet of hay for the winter. The Ice Cream banana might be too tender for outdoors though, that one I would bring in. Put it in anyroom where your cats and kids wont get to it because bananas dont need much light when dormat anyways.

How about an el-cheapo "lean-to greenhouse" on a south facing wall?
This one was made from scrap (free) PVC pipe & $15 worth of plastic sheeting & duct tape.
We did cheat a little with the addition of a box fan on a thermostat that draws "warm" air from under the house.
zone 9 & it never gets below 40°f (that's as low as the thermostat goes)

Good idea but I live 15feet off the ground and the balcony isn't very big and stuffed with tons of cactus.

That sounds like a good spot for one of those crank-out awnings (http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=869036&ecid=salewk32tsglawn&em_id=sweepstakes@comdive.com&utm_source=internal&utm_medium=email-sale&utm_campaign=salewk32tsglawn); you can whip up some side curtains for it.
I'm sure your cacti would love you for that! :nanadrink:
