I still have berries (fruit?) on the tiny one I'm growing, but by the time they begin to show a little purple, the next day they are gone (birds?). I think I'm going to wrap the part of the vine with the fruit in some of that mesh material like on a bridal veil (get it cheap at Wal-Mart), so the critters can't get to it, and it won't fall down where I might not see it.

Did you ever get a positive ID on it ? I have a similar problem.Capsularis fruit split open on the vine to release seed.

P. suberosa - the 'corky' stem passion flower. The clincher was the old stems do like long skinny pieces of cork. When you first see it, you think it is an old dead stem - it's not. Also they are both the same tiny size, and the leaves are a perfect match - like a bird footprint.

Better yet; we use the short nylon stockings, you might even be able to chop them in half & get 2 (or more) pieces from each one. (tie the end shut w/ string).

I use those for saving/controlling the seed from the various datura I'm so fond of & there's no reason they won't work for deterring birds from running off with your passiflora pods, though you'll probably want to tether the things so the critters won't fly off with the whole thing.

I just harvested the rest of our pods yesterday or I'd shoot some pics of them in use.

Wanna see some datura wearing socks on their "apples"?

Short pieces of nylon stockings slid over seed pods. Center sections of sock have an end tied off.
You can either mooch some stray stockings or a visit to the 99¢ store will produce a pile of little sacks.
Some of these are going on 3-4 years old so you get some good mileage out of the things.

I'll try to get some better shots tonight, there's some bad pixilation in the other pic.

pardon the lousy quality, I'll steal the GF's camera tonight after it gets dark & re-shoot.

I use that to tie my orchids sometimes, but I already have some of the mesh material left over from my using it to keep fruit flies away from my cucumbers.

While not as easy as having your own personal seed cleaner ant slaves, ;) I dump the seed & pulp in an shallow plastic container, add a few tablespoons of sifted sand & start "mixing", adding either more sand or a little water 'till it's about the consistency of thick toothpaste.
Toss in a wire strainer & rinse with a little bit of water.
It cleans them remarkably quick usually with just 1 stint in the bowl.

I'd shoot some pics but just cleaned up all the ripe pods a few days ago.

Are the seed coming out real clean? I'm going to try your method. Found a yard full of incarnata vines loaded with fruit. How can I tell when they are ripe? The gentleman gave me a fruit right off vine that he said was on there a long time. It is sitting on the counter just waiting to supply seed. It has a hard shell and is green in color.

The fruit will turn color when ripe orange or yellow . It's best to let them drop from the vine.If you can get some pollen from this plant you can use it to pollinate your plant.
