Hello all, I'm obviously new here but have been interested in Bananas for about the last year. I'm just having a hard time finding a place that sells them in and around Gilbert Arizona. Is there any other members here in the desert that are having better luck thank I? If so what kind of bananas do you have? I've been on a few sites to order them but it's just too hot to put them through that kind of stress right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I live in Dallas, Texas and it has been averaging 104-115 for the past month-very hot. This summer for in ground, I planted-California Gold, Orinoco, Texas star( not sure of its true identity), Truly Tiny, unknown-family gift, Gold Finger. California Gold did the best in the heat. Texas Star did the worst in the heat. Some of the Texas Star leaves were sun-burned
Hey KEN!
I'm far from a desert or an expert on naners but i'll give you my 2 cents anyway. If your worried about the shipping as far as heat, all my plants arrived in good condition even from the west coast to the east. It's after i plant them that they seem to suffer (transplant shock) some worst then others. I dust the roots with mycostim and keep them out of full sun for a couple weeks and they start to bounce back. In your case i guess the point is if you have extreme heat try to provide as much shade as you can, whether it be planting in a semi shady spot or putting a tarp over them till they get established and see what happens.(wilt pruf should help somewhat) As far as what kind, go for what you like, won't really know till you try. You can compare to others and they do know there sh*t, but also soil, fert.and watering all play a role! (Research is one of the best things you can do!) Anyway u can find good deals on e-bay or SANDY from here may be able to help you with details and plants.Northern Tropics Greenhouse (http://northerntropics.mybisi.com/) and enter discount code

Actually my Orinoco is doing the best growth in over 105 degree temp. in dallas; its leaves are dark and firm, and fat trunk. Second is my California gold; the leaves is from green to the young ones-yellow green. 3rd- Truly Tiny. The highest temp. I got so far on my external car temp.wage is 118. My Orinoco is handling the heat very well, and w'll see how it goes in the winter for the cold hardest. All my in-ground banana's are growing on a large raised bed together and gets watered morning daily.

Welcome! I am new to bananas too. There are so many varieties that are grown all around the world...I am sure there is some kind you could grow...although you wouldn't find me out watering them in that heat! LOL Too hot for me!!

I’m a newbie too. I live on the North Phoenix-Glendale border. I ordered my first banana a few months ago, an Ice Cream/Blue Java. I potted it and put it outside where it would get morning sun only. It lasted about 2 weeks and bent in the middle and died. The next week the corm put up two water suckers that I’m still working with. The next month I got the Dwarf Nam Wah that I had ordered. It‘s potted in full shade on the north side of the house and doing fine. It came in with 2 leaves and now has 8 and a new one popping out. I have a Dwarf Orinoco, which I ordered like all of them, on the internet. It’s potted and kept inside under a grow light. It’s doing just fine. I had a Dwarf Red on order forever a month that arrived USPS Friday. I potted it up and it’s inside with the Orinoco and just starting to put up a new leaf. All of these were received either through the US Mail or UPS. I’m retired and was home for all the deliveries so nothing stayed on the porch cooking too long but the boxes were all hot from storage and transport. I’d say pick one that doesn’t cost a lot and go for it. I‘ve ordered 9 other plants over the internet over the last 5 months and all but one are doing ok. The dead one was a blueberry shipment that wasn’t in good shape when it got here but from the packaging and the condition of the plants I thought (and later confirmed) it was from a bad nursery.
Good Luck

I bought a banana plant at the supermarket...labelled "banana plant" and I believe it is an Abyssinian Red. It is a beautifully colored banana that I have growing indoors. It may not have a very glamorous beginning nor be of a rare type but I like it a lot! Maybe you could find a nice plant around town some place.
