Are there "Blue Java" plants out there that aren't true to type?
I have one that I bought as a TC and another that came from a reputable farm supply store, they both appear identical in growth habits and leaf type, no fruit yet.
Thank you

Ted does sell TC's and it is probably the right Ice Cream. My original came from Lowe's or Home Depot and I'm pretty sure it's not Ice Cream. The one's I got today were from Quail Gardens and are most likely Ice Cream, anyhow they are different than the Lowe's IC.

Tony,
One sure way to tell if a naner is a Blue Java is check out the roots after it's potted for a year. Unbelievably huge dense mass of thick roots. My Dwarf Orinocos are like that. They bulge and split open the pot when pups develop.
It's a real pain to clean out the dirt and trim roots for shipping on the DO. I'm not planting the BJ, just repotting it for someone who wants it - locally.
Don't grow real tall ones any more cause of the wind. The Saba is laying on the ground ---- AGAIN ----after PM storm winds last week.

I'm not totally sure, but I think the big guys that supply home depot and lowes with bananas are getting their liners from Agristarts as well. I've been to Agristarts to pick up orders and sometimes I would see like 2400 D. Cavendish liners going to a nursery. The only outlet for that many plants would be a national chain garden center.

all of the ones i see being sold here look like this... they are all light green/ sea foam (base color) and have dark mottling on the p- stem.. when someone gives a different description i am kinda skeptical... im not saying there can be no variation.. its just what im familiar with.
there were several stores and nurseries around here selling them at one time. i visted lots of different places and checked the sources. they all seemed to check out. i have never seen any being sold in lowes or home depot.. they have a very unique color..
yep i had the real deal once, but lost it. i will be really careful about replacing it because ive seen people get Cavendish types in place of javas :-0 i learned a long time ago.
I have been growing Ice Creams for two years and got them from three sources, local nursery, Going Bananas and an online nursery. None had red anywhere on the leaves, rather pale green as really young.

HD Ice Cream. Red outline on leaves, pink on petioles
Ugh, the ice cream I purchased a year or two ago has the red outline as well. I guess I'd better add IC back to my profile 'wanted' list.
I just checked mine again and for small pups they all have a very faint red outline on the leaves, but soon it disappears, no red anywhere els and they sure look like the description of IceCream.
Plus I got them from a very good local nursery, Going Bananas and a place that sell Agristart material.
So what do you think, that all of them are NamWahs instead of IceCream?
None is bought at HD/Lowes...
:drum:Shoot, if that is the case I need to get me a real IceCream!

Somebody that does a lot of business with Agristarts needs to put a little pressure on them to standardize their variety names. Their misi luki is not really misi luki, and their ice cream is not really ice cream. I thought me and my 2000 plants was a big deal but there are nurseries that do that many each and every month.

Just went out to look at my bananas. Pink edges on the leaves of the sword suckers.
If it is actually Namwah instead of a Blue Java as some on this thread are implying - how cold hardy is Namwah since the wiki says zone 9 and how fast of a fruiter is it. The psuedostems on the mat in my backyard survived the sub 20F temps last winter that killed my Cavendish to the ground. This mat also produced fruit 11 months from planting.
I bought it last year up at Davis Nursery in Summerdale as a two foot tall plant.
Here's the mat, fruit and flower if it helps to determine what it really is. The psuedostem with the bunch on it, this is its 1st year fruiting and only has four leaves on it that came out before fruiting. The camera flash blew out the colors, but there is a bluish powder on the fruit and undersides of the leaves.

Amanda, I'm pretty sure yours is a "Namwah" (Pisang Awak subgroup) based on fruit color, bud shape, bract color, etc. That is probably good news if you are looking for a tough, cold-hardy plant. Namwahs are among the toughest and they make tasty fruit.

Its just tagalog for "banana blossom in coconut cream." If you Google the tagalog spelling, there's plenty of recipes for it online. Both Publix and Winn-Dixie sell everything to make it (except for the banana blossom of course).

So That Home Depot Labeled Ice cream banana Finally Ripened and we tasted one yesterday.... It has a Slight Pineapple flavor to it.. First bite we weren't to sure we liked it (probably because we've only ever tasted store bought) But it's pretty good. I'll keep it going... Too bad it only put out 2 hands. Fruit is about 5-6 inches long Yellow and a bit chubby. It bloomed right around the end of our frosty days. I can't remember exactly what month that was... Feb/Mar??
Just thought I'd post what the turn out was for it. =)
