Hi,
My dad was cutting the grass and mowing the lawn today and he found these growing in our yard:

Anyone know what they are? I can't get any more info as my dad mowed them down after taking a picture :'(

(Thats my dads arm, I am not that hairy ;) )

Dunno, Smooth Volvariella (V. speciosa)? Wish you had more angles of the gills and stems. Alas, a good find. They are huge!

If they come back I will try to get my family to leave them alone and I will get some better pictures. But I don't know if they will come back. Maybe with my dad mowing them over it released some spores or something?

I have never seen any mushrooms this big, its a shame I couldn't have been outside when they where still around to get some better pictures.

Probably Chlorophyllum molybdites. Next time see if they have green gills or green spore print. They are common lawn dwellers east of the Mississippi. They are also poisonous!

Never fear; most of the "mushroom" is still there yet, growing underground.
The part we see sticking up out of the ground is just the "fruit".
They'll be back when the temperature & humidity is just right for fruiting.

As mentioned by several other folks already, more pics are needed, the stem (if it has a ring where the cap attached), edge of the cap (to see if all the gills go to the edge), & then cut or break the cap off the stem & set it on a sheet of typing paper to collect a spore print.

Thanks :)

How they are actually mostly underground is what I meant by them coming back soon. And maybe when he chopped them up it released some spores or something that will increase their population even more :)

I will check on where they were every day or so and post pictures if they come back.

Whatever it is, it is the fruiting body of a very large plant. It will probably "bloom" again in about a year, when the moisture and temperature are correct.

Here's another very large mushroom, this is not the same one as the others. But it is on the other side of our fence. So maybe it is connected with the others underground?

It is the only one right now, so I don't want to hurt it or take it up. So I just left it alone. And I have this weird "fear", I guess you could call it, of touching any type of fungi. :ha: So I am not touching these. I think they are very cool and love them being around outside, but I just can't stand to touch them.

If more pop up somewhere I will make my dad or mom get a spore print. :ha:

None of the smaller ones have come back yet, maybe they will soon.

I have never had these types of mushrooms in my yard before, we only get the tiny ones every once and a while. So this is unusual and very cool.

Your new photos are the same mushroom as the others, just younger. Nothing can harm you from touching them. In fact, it would be a fun experiment for you to take a spore print. Just pull or cut the cap off one of them and place it on a piece of paper (either white or black or both if you have it. Put a bowl over it and leave it overnight. In the morning you will have a spore print. My guess is it will be green. These fruit constantly when it rains down here in FL. I have them all over my yard. The last photo shows the green spores.

Hi,
Very cool pictures! :D

I think those in your pictures are them, it looks exactly like it that I can tell.

I think I still might end up making my dad do it :ha: unless I get some gloves. I know they won't hurt me by touching them, its just... I don't really know. It just bothers me for some reason.
