Thought I would start this out with my own current problem. OK, maybe one of you sound and computer mavens here can help. My computer crashed/froze last week, and the only recourse ended up being a reset to the computer the way it was when I got it a number of years ago. Doing a lot of updating and scrambling to find old install CD's for programs added after I bought it. A big lingering problem- NO F**king sound! It says I have no audio devices iin the computer, and I installed at least one (nVidia High Def Audio) (and RealTek High DeF Audio) myself. Anybody with any suggestions ( and yes the speakers work!)? I run XP on a HP Media Center PC m7350n. Thanks!!

Here's a few websites that might help:
Missing or lost sound in Windows. (http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000208.htm)
No sound in Windows (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/no-sound-in-windows)

I would check to make sure that the speakers and sound card are showing up in the sound part of your tool panel. But you said that they didn't show up.

Do you know what sound card you have?

The generic windows audio driver should get you sound. If you installed the right driver and it still says no sound card found, you may have lost the hardware and thats what caused the crash. Do you run a 2nd sound card or just intergrated sound?

I'm hoping you have something like Trend Micro security installed and run a complete scan once per week.

I once had a similar problem after a crash and a reïnstal. You are missing some drivers. In particular the one for sound. That is why it is unable to detect your sound device even though it is connected and you have nvidia and realtek. Besides the normal windows install CD you should have another CD that has those drivers. If you don't have them ask around. Or you could use a program like DRIVERMAX AGENT. Or one like it.

This program looks for outdated drivers and most importantly since that is your problem also detects that you don't have a driver for sound and will suggest a solution.

But first go to "device manager" and see if you have some question marks. If you have some then first try to solve it by right clicking the question mark. And follow the suggestions.

You can also go to HP site and download drivers,I think

You could but then the problem would be what driver do you need to download. There are a lot of them. And unless you're an expert it's impossible to know.

The site can check you system and suggest the best one.

Now would be an excellent time to consider ditching Micro$oft Windoze all together & make the switch to LINUX.
There are some distributions out there that are designed to be very "windoze-like" in appearance & function, making the switch practically painless.
Best of all, you can even run it off of it's own CD first, with nothing getting written to the hard disk so you can check out all its built-in hardware drivers to make sure your hardware is 100% "Linux friendly".

I would suggest PhoenixOS, it's probably the easiest for a windoze user to run.

Created By R.A.C. Computers (http://www.raccomputers.com/phoenixos.html) (click to read up on it)

If you have a slow internet connection or can't burn an *iso file to disc, PM me & I can drop one in the mail to you.

Been a windows user for 15 years and a Mac user for 9 years. Viruses/malware have killed two of my pc's and cost me tons in time and money, yet the Mac's have never had an issue. Ive used all sorts of paid and free virus/malware/spyware protection on the PC's, yet nothing on the Mac's. I surf to the same websites on both, use both for video and photo editing.

Never tried Linux, but I have been very happy with Mac and will never buy another Windows machine.

I've been very happy with Apple Desktop systems. I am a programmer, so I would prefer to be on a Unix-type system (e.g., Linux) -- the Sun System V OS was great. The Windows platform is near the bottom of my list. However, I choose to be on Windows. Unfortunately, I depend on it for efficient interoperability with other Windows systems. There are work-arounds, but I don't have the time to use or maintain them.

Hi,
I have multiple computers and I like Linux OS's the most. My favorite right now is Kororaa, which has SElinux in it and is a run off sort of, of Fedora. I also like DSL and puppy linux.

I have to use Windows on my two main computers though, my desktop with windows 7, and my laptop with windows XP. School and many software companies require Windows :'(

If school and software didn't use Windows mainly I would use Mac or Linux.

Windows kind of makes me very mad (could have said some other choice words). Especially XP, mainly that annoying search thing! The goof-ball dog that takes ten minutes to find Microsoft word. And then the "Built in malware problems" ;)

Install this (ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp32501-33000/sp32646.exe) first, then the audio driver (ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software6/COL13269/pv-36943-1/sp26600.exe).
