I just got a new dwarf red jamacian. The problem is that it is about 18 inches tall but it seems to have grown sideways as the plant seems to resemble a j. Is there a way to straighten it out? could I just cut it near the ground and have it grow new leaves?

You just need to re-plant it straight

The root ball is very big, it won't fit in the pot if I put the stem straight up.

You need a bigger pot.

Okay. I will take your advice. I was just hoping not to have to go out and get some soil and another container.

You can trim the corm some on the sides, but it's probably better to get a larger container

Another vote with the majority; yank it out of the pot & re-pot it straight.
Cutting it at ground level this time of year might be too stressful for it to recover.
You can get away with using any old container if you want, even a cracked / broken bucket, box w/ garbage bag liner (all with proper drainage, of course), etc. & then re-pot again into a prettier pot a few months down the road.

And move it away from the snowblower, you're scaring it! :ha:

I guess i'll eventually repot it. my problem is I don't haven any money to buy some soil. And my ground around my house is clay so I can just dig some up.

I had one like this, it stayed growing to the side but then leaves started near the bottom and they were going straight up. Eventually the leaves going straight up took over and the sideways ones died off.
Yours may straighten up a bit on it's own, but it definitely looks like it needs a bigger pot. What size is the one you have? 2 gallon?

I think it is a 4" pot that it is in.

Prop it so the stem is going straight up then, otherwise you'll wind up with an "S" shaped banana!

You should be able to scrape up something that closely approximates dirt, even if you have to go for a walk at night with a grocery bag & tablespoon.

use a forked stick and put a little pressure on it and start straightening it up a little bit at a time. Prop it up so it's a little straighter a few days at a time and it'll go.

Our t/c ice cream did the same thing. We put a pole into the pot and pulled it over, tied it, and shortly it grew straight.

LOL have you never stolen soil from another pot to fill the pot you are working on?
