View Full Version : Guess the African Rhinohorn Bunch Size
Richard
07-19-2011, 11:51 PM
I returned from a week in Alaska to find a bud emerging at about 12-foot height. It's partially obscured in this photo by a short flag leaf:
http://www.plantsthatproduce.com/image_gallery/African_Rhinohorn_bud_tip_2011_07_300x400.jpg
Guess the correct total number of fingers that form on my African Rhinohorn and win a prize. If no one guesses the correct number then the closest guess wins. If there are two "closest" guesses, then two prizes will be awarded.
The prize will be a 5-lb bag of 20-5-30 Banana Fuel or your choice of banana pup from those I have in nursery stock, including shipping via USPS (http://www.usps.com/), which includes most international locations.
Here are the official contest rules (PLEASE READ):

Good luck to all!

They generally don't produce large numbers of fruit.

In this photo I took of the Misi Luki last month, the African Rhinohorn is just to the right of center:

This bud was outstanding. It just kept going, and going, and going ... and finally completed in early September. It produced 8 hands of 8 fingers each, shown here:
http://www.plantsthatproduce.com/image_gallery/AfricanRhinohornBunch_500x550.jpg
Now let's see ... 8 x 8 = 64 ... that means our winner is

Richard- The Marzano pup came and is in great condition, and a VERY nice size. As it's rather chilly here, I think I'll store it until spring with my other bare root fellows, or do you think I should pot it to keep it inside for the winter? Again, thank you for the wonderful contest, and for the VERY GENEROUS prize!

Hey, you're welcome! I'd pot it up indoors where it will get 6 or so hours of light. Watch the moisture level so that it does not dry out but is no where near wet enough to rot.
