So I finally got some time to drop by Starfish's Nursery, aka Tony's house, and pick up some banana plants for myself. It was quite the pleasure to his collection and it felt like a kid in a toy store. I want this, I want that now, now, now!
Originally I was just going to get 1 plant for my tiny place. But I ended up taking 2.

Wait... you said you took only 2 home but i count 4....
Well the Super Dwarf Cavendish actually had 2 pups. 3 for the price of 1!

Now I also got some plants for my mom.
Dwarf Namwah
Dwarf Brazilian

hehe. I figured it would not be a CG. But I could wish. The pup is way small to make any guesses. I hope it doesnt get too big as I may not have the space for it. Guess it will go to my mom if it gets higher than 10'. When it gets more height and leaves will play the guessing game again.

Looks like Tony gave you a good deal. I wish I could persuade him to ship some to me, but I guess I'll still have to rely on the little TCs from Florida.

I got home today and found brown blotches on my SDC. The leaves seem to be wilting also. :(
The other plants look okay. Am I over watering? I will post pictures when I get a chance.

I water them daily between 8am to 9am before I head off to work. I let the water run on them until i see the water flow out of the drain holes in the bottom. That usually takes 1 to 2 mins. I'm using pure Miracle Grow Palm/Cactus Mix. Its really fast at draining.
Today I did not water the SDC as I will see if it will do better if I only ater every other day.

I guess i threw her into the deep end then. I will start to water them twice a week from now on. Soon as the new leaf come out I will introduce some fertilizer on them. Gotta get hold of Richard since he is a few blocks away from me.

I really need to stop reading about bananas. Now I want to pick up another plant. I really want a dwarf red. :(
Maybe I will be paying Tony another visit soon. Drop by Sunfish Nursery (not Starfish ;) ).

I think the cause of my SDC looking very sick is cuased by root rot. As i stuck my finger in one of the drain holes to feel the level of moistness the soil I got a slimy residue all over my finger. Sure it enough it was a slug I touched. I decided to dig it up too see if the slugs have gotten to the roots. There wasn't any signs of slugs near the roots but the older roots have gone black. I assume that black roots isnt a good sign and that it might be rotten. I went ahead and cut off the roots that were black. some were pretty long, and i'd say they were about 3 to 4 inches. There were also smaller roots that were white and a sucker was forming on the side. So I think the plant will survive.
Did I do the right thing? Or have I further killed my new SDC?

You did the right thing.Whatch the watering. You can let the soil go completely dry between watering. If this is an indoor plant once a week is plenty of water.

Chris,
Given that the weather is warm and you caught the rot early, your plant should be fine. Like Tony said, don't let the soil stay soggy. A well-draining potting mix, like a cactus mix, is the way to go. I think overwatering is the number one rookie mistake -- I know I made it. You think, "well, these are tropical plants, they must need lots of water". But given that you aren't growing them in the tropics, that logic doesn't work all the time.
Good luck.

Looks like the plants are doing better now. I reduced the watering of the SDC to every other day. The Mystery Banana Plant is still getting a daily dose of water which looks like its liking. I haven't watered the dwarf red since Saturday.

Hello Everyone!!!!
Its been a few months since I last updated. Nothing exciting has really happened with my bananas until last night. But I guess something much more exciting has happened with the ones I got my Mom. Here is a pic she sent me yesterday.

I think this is the Goldfinger I got from Sunfish.
I came by later in the evening and took a few more shots.

Congrats Chris. Keep doing what you're doing. They don't need any special care when they are developing the bunch, except for perhaps propping, but I doubt that plant will need to be propped. You'll know if it does -- it's start leaning a lot.
