I have expanded my "elephant ear" collection quite a bit this year. The only plants I did not get pictures of was my Alocasia 'Sting Ray' and an unknown one that I will post in a seperate post. Please excuse the weeds, because I am actually moving to another house and haven't been serious on taken down the weeds.

NICE! I got some upright ee's that been in the ground over a month, and just started sprouting last week. Do they grow quicker than naners or about the same?

Very nice collection! Do you have Colocasia Gigantea? It is a very large Thai variety. Let me know if you are interested in a trade.

Jake, looking great!!! The one you are calling DiamondBack, could it be 'Diamond Head'??? If so, I have several and they have overwintered outdoors as far north as DC, from my understanding! I have yet to try them outdoors but will this year...
The other one I wondered about is the one you have listed as 'Tiger Stripe'. I have never heard of that one. Looks alot like my 'Chicago Harlequin' and is a great one for your collection. My 'CH' grew to about 7' tall last summer and was amazing... They have overwintered in my area too, so should be another winner for you!!! Great job and keep up the amazing work!!!

Very nice collection! I'm thinking of trying to over winter Pink China here in CT zone 6.

Thanks! Paul

It is good to hear that the 'Diamond Head' variety seems to be very hardy. I did mean 'Diamond Head', I got it confused because prior to loading these I was looking at a roller coaster called Diamondback at Kings Island in Cincy. Haha. As for 'Tiger Stripe' it seems to be different from 'Chicago Harlequin'. Both Plant Delights (http://www.plantdelights.com/Colocasia-esculenta-Tiger-Stripe-Perennial-Elephant-Ear/productinfo/7591/) and Brian's Botanicals (http://www.briansbotanicals.net/Colocasia/Colocasia--Tiger-Stripe--Variegated_Colocasia--Tiger-Stripe--Variegated)have them. Maybe they are related?

I think you will have no problem over wintering 'Pink China'. You should also try 'Black Pearl' which is rated down to zone 6 and possibly colder. It has grown a lot faster than 'Pink China' and started growing about a month sooner as well.

Nice collection! Is Pink China hardy for you without protection? I always wanted to try elephant ears in the ground here, but cannas do not come up for me (some will come up for other people) so I doubt most elephant ears would come up either, but I heard that pink china is one of the most cold hardy.
All your elephant ears are so nice and healthy!
Thanks for sharing!

You need to try both 'Pink China' and 'Black Pearl'. Both this past winter survived with just less than an inch of mulch covering them. We got down to 1f and had snow and rain and temps below freezing for a week or so at a time. I haven't had any luck with Canna's surviving here either, but these EE's do.

I don't mind. I happened to be in a Big Lots last fall and saw it. It was for indoors and was on sale there for $30. It had been a lot more, more then I ever would have paid. I'm not sure what it is made out of, but it isn't metal, plastic or ceramic. It is hard, so I'm not sure what it is exactly.

Great collection of EEs! I just started expanding my collection this year as well. Prior, I only had Gigantias, but this year, added Pink China, Nancyana, Boa (so cool), Mojito, Calidora, Frydek (WAY cool), Blue Hawaii, and one other whose name escapes me right now. I live in Zone 6 and have never tried overwintering any of them. Would covering them with a few inches of straw work and, if so, would that need a tarp over it or something?

By the way, I get a season pass each year to Kings Island. You would LOVE the Diamondback ... smooth as glass and way fast. Until its installation, their "claim to fame" coaster had always been The Beast ... and it IS that! Two others I love are Flight of Fear (all-indoor coaster with "jettison launch" with entire ride in almost complete darkness) and Firehawk (lays you on your back to go up the main hill, then flips you over and lets you really get a feel for what it must be like to fly like a bird).

Thanks for sharing your photos!

Annie, I have been to Kings Island every since 2002. I love it. I even visited the year Diamondback opened. I wanna get up there and ride Windseeker. I too love Flight of Fear. There is just something about it I have always loved. I do miss Paramount owning the park though and feel like Cedar Fair which own Cedar Point is trying to turn it into a mini-Point. Lol. Whichi is fine if we get some of those big coasters.

As for the EE's I am going to say that 'Pink China' would be fine, just mulch it. Any of the others I have no clue. I always say take a pup or runner and then mulch the rest and see if they return. The lsited hardiness zones can always be a little to warm and they may be able to take colder.

Super!!! Stunning collection of colocasias...or EEs. I surprised that you are growing them in zone 6. The first pic on your post does not look like nancy's rivenge to me. I have the similar looking one it's an edible type. I do not know it's the same. I do not have nancyana (nancy's rivenge).
I am addicted to aroids. I have good collection of aroids. Many of them are Caladiums. I will post the pics soon. I am in the process of expanding and organizing my Aroid collection. I wanted to collect different types of colocasias like you have. I think I have Xanthosoma sagittifolium or some thing look like it. It's edible. I also have Alocasia 'Odora. I do not have any other one's you have. Thanks for posting the pics and names.
I lost six of my aroids including black magic and 'Illustris'. They never come back after the winter. I am not sure it is killed by the forst or worms. I try to keep them in pots except the edible ones. Good thing about container gardening is portability but the bad thing is that the leaves and plants do not get bigger in smaller pots. I like to move them around. 'Lime Aide' is one of my favorites one. It's in my wanted list. It’s look like your lime aide is loosing its variegation. I think some one already posted about this limeaide problem.

Unfortunately for me and the plant, my Pink China did not return this year, despite a layer of mulch and a nearby weigelia shrub to provide wind cover. I was looking forward to a nice size clump this year like yours!
I am also regretting not getting a Blue Hawaii; it's beautiful!

'Black Pearl' and 'Pink China' I don't really do anything. I have also had the regular green kind survive here in Kentucky with just mulch. The others I plan on taking some in this winter of each and leaving some out with mulch. In the past I have had success with just leavig elephnat ear plnats in my garage in dirt all winter.

Couldn't find a gator kinda like yours but this will work, if anyone else is interested, as it will surely make a nice addition as well as a conversation piece to ones garden!--http://www.beallsflorida.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product__10151_-1_12003_343622

guess you gotta copy and paste in browser and on another note it don't tell ya how big it is.

Really incredible collection. Love the Blue Hawaii. Will all these grow in hot humid Florida or will fungus get them? I tried stingray but failed twice. Someone said they do not like it wet and I watered it every day. I have plenty of the large common EE but would love to grow some of what you have.

Stingray is an Alocasia and they generally need less water than Colocasia.
Colocasias can handle more watering than Alocasias.
Most of the EE's you see are Colocasias- especially the really interesting colorful ones- Black Magic, Mojito, Blue Hawaii, Diamond Head, Black Beauty, etc. Generally (when we talk about what people plant outside) Alocasia's have Green Upright leaves- Portodora, Stingray, Calidora, California, Odora-etc.

Darkman, like hasalready been said, Alocasia's need a lot less water than colocasia's. All of these except for the one mentioned like water. When I lived in Jax, I grew Colocasia's and they all did well. No fungus at all. You just need to make sure they stay watered and have some nutrients in the sandy "soil". I had trouble with that part.

I water my ee's almost every day, and feed them every 2 weeks. They seem to like it. The Colocasias in my pond are fed monthly.

Actually I've noticed that the Colocasias produce more plants than the Alocasias, some by standard offsets, others even do runners and make lots and lots of plants.

thanks mbfirey... one of my thai giants has 3 offshoots.. one of the other
thai giants has 2 pups that already have their 2 leaves going..??
surprised me..
i hope that putting the energy into the pups wont drain mother plants
ability to get HUGE!!!
anyoneknow on this????
certainly not unhappy for the extra plants thats for sure..:goteam:
i give my tropicals.. EE and bananas.. mix of my own brew of manure tea (made with rabbit manure and bat guano) sure smells great..LOL
with kelp/fulvic/humic acid powder, banana fuel .. i make a weaker
solution of it.. but fertilize more often..
plants seem to like it..
2 sabas i got from member here are getting huge..xanthosomas,colocasia,
alocasias are doing great..
again..hope pupping on EE doesnt drain mother plants and they still do
get HUGE ..

I haven't noticed pupping causing the main plant to slow down in growth. Usually by the time the runner starts to make leaves it has grown or will grow its own set of roots.

Jake

mbfirey

Funny you should mention the Thai Giant, because for me behaves more like an Alocasia as far as number of pups goes. Maybe 2-3 per season, which is about what I get from my portodora, and Borneo Giant. I have one that had 3 different plants on one "bulb" when I put it back out this summer an I still haven't gotten pups from any of the three.
Typically my Colocasias can get 10 or more different plants in one season from a 4" pot planted in the beginning- though I wouldn't divide off that many from one plant.

In the 3rd picture the dark pink redish one is Lance Whorton Caladium and the small one on the left corner is called caladium Thai beauty. A similar looking plant is also called Pink Symphony Caladium. I do not know the difference.

I grew Thai Beauty 2 years ago. I loved it. Unfortunately, I was out with back problems when it was time to dig tubers, and it went through the winter unsuccessfully. This year I'm trying

Mine is still relatively small; I can't wait until it takes off!

The only plant that we talk about here that "as a rule" doesn't pup would be ensetes... about everything else does eventually. Bananas, Colocasias, Gingers, Cannas, Alocasias all very good multipliers.
As to taking energy...yes they do, but I'm not sure if separating would also slow growth, as it is also a little bit of trama on the plant. I had a "Diamond Head" EE come back this year, and it grew without pups for a month or so, and it was MUCH bigger than it was last year when it was surrounded by pups from the beginning....

I have never noticed pups making the main plant grow any slower than normal. All of my established ones continue to pup like crazy and are taller and wider than they were last year.

What happened with the Diamond head may have nothing to do with pups... just noticed the large size and lack of pups...and a possible connection. We know it's true to some extent with Bananas, commercial growers keep them at 3 stems for some reason.

Interesting... I guess I just have never paid much attention.

much thanks all..on your experiences !!
i posted same question on daves garden..
lari ann.. aroid grower extrodinarire!! had similar to say
as u all..
i guess there are 2 ways of side shoot/pupping reproducing..
one way..the side branch shoot plantlet may have a slowing
down of mother plant growth..
my thai giants are pupping/side plantlets like crazy.. glad for it..
just i want my mother plants to get HUGE !!!!
:)
i asked question there..and ask here too..
cutting the side shoot plantlets off.. may have adverse/shocking
affect on mother plant..
so.. whole thing of this may be a wash on mother plant???
we had a monster rain storm here today.. YEA :goteam:
this is such non typical weather for us at this time of yr...
humidity is relatively high(for us and this time of yr) and temps
are high 90F..
i think i hear my tropicals singing out there.. they think they are in
the tropics.. LOL
thanks all for your insights.. i always learn so much here.. !!!!

We have some giant elephant ears spread out around the yard - and a pair of black ones we got at the Farmers market - but the color has changed since we planted them in mid-June. Lots of ferns and hostas - plus the pond is nearly overrun with Water hyacinths now! Mordecai the gargoyle (AKA, the squirrel god) is nearly overrun with the EEars!

We do have a couple plantings of the Giant type Elephant ears - the bulbs were a gift of a friend in DC, and this is our second year planting them ... of course, we dig them up in the fall before it gets cold and frost gets them!

The first cluster is along a path back to the pond ...
just across from our herb garden (Basil, mint and tons more) ...
It gets some morning and mid-day sun, then is shaded in the afternoon ...

The second cluster is in an old Rubbermaid garden pot ...
its over by the day lilies and a lilac plant ...
its in a more sunny place and its doing GREAT!

Magilla Gorilla, nice! I see your horsetail... How old are they? Mine are about four feet this year, but I want them taller like yours and ones I have seen at a local amusement park. I am glad to see that Mojito is just a small grower since yours looks smaller as well.

I think you have a Colocasia fontanesii on your hands. I know some have that glossy leaf. Not sure on its hardiness, but I know it is a very fast spreader.
