I noticed that I dont post nearly as many pictures on this fourm as I take, so I'm making this thread so that way I can show you all the pictures of my yard.
I'll start with what I took pictutes of today. Its not all my plants, or all my yard, but its a start! I'll share some more pics in a few days (probably of the whole yard).
Here is my new planting bed. It took me 2 hours to do this today (in the scorching full sun and 90+ degree heat!)
Heres the area before (only thing there was my Crape Myrtle "Zuni", which is a very late blooming cultivator).
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5222.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5222.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Heres the plan
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5221.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5221.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Heres what it looked like after I dug some grass up
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5223.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5223.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Heres a look of it all completed. The yellow flowers are Portulaca (closed up for the day), the hardy hibiscus is Kopper King, the pinkish flower is a cone flower "Fatal Attraction" and I also have some ice plants, an eastern prickly pear, and a potato vine in there.
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5224.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5224.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Here are some other things in bloom...
My hen and chicks are blooming longer and later this year
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5229.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5229.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
This is the first weather station I have gotten that really works accurately.
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5239.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5239.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
My Musa Velutina keeps on Flowering!
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5275.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5275.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
My red oleander is also flowering well
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5274.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5274.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Caladiums are doing well
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5273.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5273.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
One of my plumerias (this one is hidden a bit under the banana leaves. Hopefully the bananas will start growing tall so the plumeria has some room to grow)
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5272.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5272.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
My plumeria pudica basically had to re-root itself entirely this spring. Its making a great recovery, but its way behind from last year (it was starting to flower at this time last year!)
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5271.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5271.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
I never get tired of seeing the blooms from my mandevillea
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5270.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5270.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
This is my passiflora's first year in the ground. It spent last winter in a small pot in my unheated garage. it took a while to come alive again, but it has a ton of buds now and is ready to start taking off!
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5269.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5269.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Double peach hibiscus. The foliage has not been too full this year on this hibiscus.
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5267.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5267.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Some of my plumerias. The tall one has a flower comming up soon!
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5263.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5263.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
My spiral ginger keeps making pups and each one is bigger and more robust than the last. This one started comming up only 2 weeks ago and its now about 4 feet tall!
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5262.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5262.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
My cardinal vine is starting to flower. I have to keep on fixing it so it doesnt suffocate the plants around it
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5261.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5261.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
2 of the bananas on my Musa Velutina
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5259.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5259.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
This lantana is growing and flowering like crazy!
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5258.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5258.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
My solandra maxima was bare of leaves 2 weeks ago, but it looks nice now! It made a flower indoors last winter, but I missed it (I found the flower dried up on the floor)
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5256.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5256.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
My frost proof gardenia is also shade proof! Its in some pretty deep shade which is why it only has one flower, however, one flower is good enough for me because Im just happy that it survived the winter and bloomed
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5252.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5252.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
The largest of my 7 plumeria infloresences
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5249.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5249.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

My slowest banana, but one of my tallest is my Ice cream banana
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5247.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5247.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
My butterfly ginger practically died to the ground this spring after having a hard time adjusting to the sun, but it has made lots of strong pups which now have outgrown the original plant
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5246.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5246.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
My elephant ears were slow to sprout, but now that they have started growing, they cant stop!
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5244.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5244.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
I hope to see this papaya get large by the end of the summer!

I had to get a mexican petunia from a local nursery because my other mexican petunias just havent been blooming this year!
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5364.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5364.jpg" border="0" alt="7.16.11"></a>
But I did get 3 blooms from one of my mexican petunias today and there are a few buds so maybe in a month it will be in full bloom.

Thanks Greg! Mexican petunias do the best in full sun, but I have mine in part shade and they do well there too! They are pretty tolerant plants of everything (they survive cold winters, drought, heat, sun, shade, and lots of water too!).
Thanks for looking!

I still am in awe that you are growing and overwintering oleanders and others that I would never be able to grow here in my zone 7! Looks great; obviously a lot of hard work. Congratulations

Thanks a lot! I think the most work for these plants is digging up all the tender ones and bringing those and the potted plants indoors. The plants that stay outside usually are the ones with some of the least attention since I dont have to start worrying about them till mid December the earliest!
Thanks for looking!

Randy4ut has a large Queen Palm that he moves in and out each year. In the fall as I'm cursing my decision to have so many plants that must be brought inside, I think of Randy and somehow feel a bit better. :ha:

Thanks Sherry! I will definitely post when/ if my mexican petunias go into full bloom. And if I cant get pics of them in full bloom last year, I guess I'll have to dig up some bloom pics of them from last year to show everyone what they should look like!
Howard, I was thnking about Randy's Queen palm too! That is such a tall and beautiful palm, Im aiming for my queen palm to look like that someday! Im sure it must be a big challange to take that inside every year. Probably a job for friends, family, and maybe a crane too!

I really am a big fan of the classic elephant ears. They are big, cheap, and really do look beautiful!

I had to get this papaya off of ebay since I never have success with papayas from seed that I start indoors (they always burn when they go outside). My windmill palm is in its 3rd summer in the ground. Usually I give it christmas lights, a frost cloth, and christmas lights for protection, but since my other windmill palm did well without the christmas lights, I think this one will also only get a garbage bin over it this winter. The livistonia next to it will get x mas lights like last winter.

I have come to the conclusion that grasshoppers will eat absolutely any plant. I mean I cant imagine any bug that would eat entire leaves off of a plumeria, but thats what a grasshopper did to this plumeria. I just hope it leaves this infloresence alone! I have been waiting for 2 summers for this plumeria to bloom and its only a month away from doing that, but it only takes an hour for a bug to munch it off). Anyways, heres a pic of the inflo

It was suppose to be cloudy and rainy today, but we ended up getting a bit of sun (and a lot of humidity to match) so I decided to take a few pics around the yard..
Usually my airplants flower in the Fall, but they decided to bloom early this year.

My tallest and oldest plumeria is making its second bloom ever! The plant is about 7 feet tall, but it leans a bit so its actually a little taller. The flowers are small (compared to other plumerias) and a nice red color. I cant wait for the blooms!

My Plumeria "Pretty Princess" is now becoming a reliable bloomwer! The only problem is that its a late bloomer. Usually if the inflos are very young when they are taken inside, they will bloom well inside, but if the inflos developed outside, they will drop almost as soon as they go inside for the winter.
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view¤t=IMG_6203.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_6203.jpg" border="0" alt="8.7.11"></a>

There are inflos on almost every branch of my Plumeria "Divine". Im hoping for a warm September, but usually Divine has no problem blooming well into October.

This desert rose had a really hard time earlier this summer, but after some dieback and leaf drop, it did grow back and now it has at least 20 buds! Heres one of its first blooms! I think this desert rose is called "Rasberry Ice"

Okay, here are some more pics!!
We got about an inch or 2 of rain in just a few hours a few days ago so there was a river coming out of my backyard!

My Zuni Crape Myrtle finally started blooming! All of the other crapes around town have been blooming since July and I havent seen any bloom as late as mine! Im surprised that I havent noticed all the crapes in my neighborhood because I counted at least 20 as street trees just on one road!

Usually my yard is at its fullest and greatest in Late September to mid October, but with Hurricane Irene, I have a good feeling that most of my plants will be damaged so this is the best my yard might look this summer.
I saw a hummingbird last night and I had my camera in hand for once so I was able to get a few blurry images of the hummingbird getting some food from my cardinal vine's flowers.

Beautiful garden you have there, Alex. I hope your family will be safe from Hurricane Irene and your garden will survive.

If I'm not mistaken, Tray. You are asking about the Purple Heart (another common name would be Purple Queen). Here is the wikipedia link:
Tradescantia pallida - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tradescantia_pallida)
If you have access to cuttings, they are really easy to root from cuttings and it doesn't take long to root them, either.

Rae is right, they are purple heart plants. They are very easy to grow by cuttings and very easy to grow in general. Some have had them come back in zone 7 with mulch, but all I plan on doing is taking some cuttings before frost, rooting them in water, potting them up over the winter, and planting them all over again next year! They are great plants for a bit of extra color!

This palm doesnt look that sharp, but its definitely the sharpest palm (and one of the sharpest plants I own!)

It took a break in blooms in early August for no reason I can think of, but I gave it tons of blooming fertilizer (even though people say brugs bloom much better with neglect) and it responded very well and has tons of buds and blooms now!
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view¤t=IMG_7575.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_7575.jpg" border="0" alt="9.4.11"></a>
The mandevilleas are past their peak blooming time, but I've seen them blooming around the area until November so Im sure mine wont disappoint!

Passion Vine grew a lot this year. Most blooms it held in one day was 8, but last year the most it had in a day was 2, so its gone a long way in a year!

One of the tallest canna I've ever had. Its about 9 feet tall from the top leaf to the ground and it will be even taller when the bloom opens!

Coconut palm that is now about to open its 3rd frond of the year. It grows about 4 fronds a year (one frond indoors, 3 outdoors). I think it needs a new pot now.

And one of the several crapes planted on a parkway near the airport. Crapes definitely seem bulletproof in a zone 7 (and good low maintenance trees), but Im surprised to see some get dieback in zone 6's.
