New to Banana plants. Just purchased 2 new dwarfs, a Jamaican Red and a Cavendish banana plant for memorial day 2011. Hope to better understand the care and hopefully meet some cool people along the way.

Cheers

Welcome Big Tony. People definitely grow bananas in the SF Valley, despite the hot, dry summers, and the occasional winter freezes. I live in Ventura but work in Northridge and see banana plants in the Valley, on my drive to work, producing fruit. You might want to try a "Misi Luki" (the non-Mysore type) -- those in the know say it stands up to your challenging weather better than most.

Tony,

If you don't want to go to Mitchel's house (which is totally worth the time to see his mini-plantation and I encourage you to go), in SoCal you can also get Misi Luki from Jon (Encanto Farms) who will ship, or you can drive by Papaya Tree Nursery (in the Valley, Granada Hills) and pick one up. Papaya Tree Nursery doesn't always have them on hand so it's worth a call first, and they will be on the expensive side. Sometimes Richard (Plants that Produce) has them; and you can probably find sources outside SoCal that will ship smaller plants of this variety.
