I used Skype every day while Greg was in Iraq.

Yes, there are apps for the Smart phones. Just go to their website. I think it is Free Skype calls and cheap calls to phones - Skype (http://www.skype.com) . They have all the information there. :)

The only equipment you need is headphones with built in microphone. I used to use it a lot on my pc laptop. You can do video chat too.

Yah, I used to use it a lot, back before my kids forgot how to turn it on.
You can get apps for a few "smartphones" as well as some other handy little gadgets that are wifi enabled, like the Nokia 770, 800n, 810n, ebook readers, tablets, etc.
In addition to the phone (and video) it also handles text /instant messaging for those very sloooow internet connections.
Some of the smartphones don't even need to be rigged as an active "phone"; my oldest kid uses an old iphone as a 'timeclock", adding machine, etc etc. & he can skype with it as long as he's within range of an access point. (he doesn't have any appropriate phone service providers in his area).
Try it, you'll probably like it!

...I ll try to get headphones and mic and other stuff till Fall. ...I have boxes of headsets, etc.
I'd be happy to send you one if you care to cover the postage.
Does your computer have both speaker/earphone and microphone jacks on the back (or front)? 3.5mm diameter?

Hey I use it quite a bit .. I call my neighbor 3 doors away on it. Computer to computer ! Works excellent..
I call my friend on Lordia Florida , I'm in south fla hes in central fla, He has a Iphone it works great on that also
I call Texas Fort Worth the connection there can be pretty bad at times . But it works . Its free ! Georgia is crystal clear from my location .. it is a little different every time I use it . But who cares its free...
Did I say its free? And its great fun to use even if the picture is a little fuzzy at times
Down load it and use it !

Our pc's and phones are on Skype and it works but I have read about "NSA Micro Shaft" tapping issues being more common since the Microsoft takeover. At one of the Tech forums theres complaints about the tapping causing the apps to lockup and crash.

Btw, Skype will be in the new Google Glasses that will be dropping sometime this year too.

We use Skype all the time - from calling my girlfriend down the road to keeping in contact with overseas friends (nearly everyone is overseas from me! lol!). When the internet connection is poor here, we just cut the video. If your Skype is working Ante, pm me your number/name.

I use SKYPE with my laptop as well as with my smartphone for years on a daily basis with my contacts especially in Europe and South America. It usually works very well. No need for mics and headphones if you have everything build in. The picture quality on my new iPhone is amazingly clear. SKYPE is the main reason for me to own a smartphone.
