I Just acquired my first variegated Musa and I need to know if I should fertilize it or not? If I fertilize it will it make it have less variegation? Does it affect the variegation at all? Thanks
Well, I'm using copius amounts of composted steer manure on my Ae Ae to 'green' it up since I have lots of sun every day. It has lost most variegation, but since I know it still has the trait, and will still produce @ 25% variegated pups; I'm happy with it - especially since it looks more attractive without the sunburned areas. I assume that the manure has plenty of nitrogen. If I want more variegation (and sunburn), I'll just cut back on the manure and give more phosphorus. I believe that magnesium will also add more green, but I don't know what the source is - maybe epsom salts in a highly dilute solution.
