Nick ---- Why did this guy get named superplantain?
To me, plantains are plantains when the're in the ground. When they are fried up and on the plate -- then they get called super!!! :ha:

The Dwarf Superplantain is a french horn type sport of dwarf puerto rican. Apparently, the type of plantain used to Puerto Rico has an unstable bunch phenotype and it is common to find spontaneous reversion from false horn to french type bunches.
It's super because instead of only having 4-5 hands per bunch the super plantain will have 8-10 hands.

Nick ---------- Are you going to do "intensive management" on your DSP's?
How many hands per bunch?
Did you get liners from A-starts? All DSP's or mixed varieties?
According to the mean weight data Yauco should stick to coffee. Yaucono brand coffee is one of the best in the world. I add some to my folgers every day or brew it straight.

I'm probably going to prune them down to 5 hands in the summer, 4 Hands in the fall, and 3 Hands in the winter. I'll do a little experimenting to see what works.

Recent visit with Nick in Pahokee - took home 3 Dwarf PR Super plantains.
The big one is in the ground now and the other 2 potted.
Brought him a big Pisang Klotek. It will go in at his house.
Thanks again Nick.

I'm starting to change my mind about the super plantain. While the fruit does tends to be shorter and more blemished than that of maricongo, dwarf super plantain produces heavier bunches.

Especially after hand pruning. Gonna try that this year on the Goldfinger. Don't need 9 hands of small-ish fruit. The last 3 hands run smaller than the rest anyway.

I think I've determined that the hands need to be pruned off as soon as you can for maximum effect. Before the bracts fall off seems to be the key.

Hmm, now this might be an excellent cultivar for my conditions.

I received the TC plantlets in late 2009, planted them in the field when they were 12" tall in April 2010, they froze in Dec 2011 and they started flowering in June 2011, with the bulk flowering in late July 2011. Harvest began in September 2011. It's a stout little plant, but I have seen pseudostems snap from carrying the weight of a bunch.
