:03: I'm going to put down some compost as a side dressing on my bananas...Most are in pots and I don't plan on putting too much in their soil.
My question is: is this enough fertilizer??...Can I also add Miracle grow or Vigoro to my bananas too??...I don't want to give them too much, but I KNOW they LOVE to "eat".
Thanks SO much :)

Compost is NOT enough. Definitely add fertilizer.

I think bananas have to be about the heaviest feeders I have dealt with. Even in the rich dark soil that I grow bananas in, I put out 1 lb of potassium per mat per year.

A mat is all plants- connected to the same corm

There are some nice drawings in the referenced link. The discussion is mainly for plants grown at the equator, and the statements about the of number of leaves until harvest are widely disputed.

in the greenhouse I use 20-10-20 at 200 ppm once a day on bananas, going to 24-8-16 when the weather gets hot at 300 ppm to really push some fast growth. I don't really think compost by itself will be enough to push fast growth.
Then again, if you don't want them to grow real fast, just want to keep them alive, they are already as big as you want them to be, I think that would be just fine. It just depends on your goal with them.

Total ppm, or Nitrogen ppm?
