I was wondering if anyone knew of any online nurseries that sell Dwarf Orinoco or Texas Star bananas. Thanks

I got Dwarf Orinocos at the local ACE Hardware store & my sister just put in dibbs on any spare pups but if any extra decide to pop up in the upcoming months, I'll slap your name on one if you don't have one already.
You'll probably like the variety if you're not already familiar with it, especially if you have a nice little microclimate location to keep it in so it doesn't get frostbit over winter.
Ours has the annoying habit of flowering late summer & then goes dormant over winter, making for close to 10 months of hang time before eating any of the fruit.
You can fry 'em up green, they make great tostones & when ripe they're good for eating out of hand as well.
The plants make for good addition to landscaping too, can usually be planted in front of a window without blocking too much of the view.

I buy my starter plants on eBay from the Wellspring Nursery. eBay ID: wellspring100
I love this seller. The starters are healthy and vigorous. I put them into a container for a couple months and then into the ground. I usually get bananas within a year. I am in Honolulu. The orinoco I planted in 2009 just finishes it's third fruiting cycle. I cut down that stem and the new keiki is getting ready to set out a bloom. In the ground, this one starts to fruit at four feet. Hope this helps.

Thank you both. I told my mom that I want one for my birthday next month so I needed to give her some ideas and prices for some. Here the local stores dont sell many bananas and I've read alot about dwarf orinoco being cold hardy. I have a tall orinoco but its not doing well right now. I'll check out wellspring too.

I got my Dwarf Orinoco along with a Dwarf Puerto Rican Plantain from GreenEarthPublishing. I had a terrible service issue with the guy, but when the plants arrived they were nice sized, larger than I expected, and healthy. Just remember to double the amount of time he claims you'll get the plants in and all will be okay.

Trebor, thank you for that link. I was planning on getting my cousins some Icecream Bananas on my next trip to Miami (they live there) and that is right around the corner.

Careful now, Wellspring is good but some stuff is mislabled. I ordered a Dwarf Orinoco but what arrived was a Regular tall Orinoco. I did not know this till it flowered.

I'm so sorry!! I must have been very, very lucky then. I just got a Dwarf Cavendish - I hope it doesn't grow up into a hulking 30ft monster that takes over the house and yard!!

You are more than welcome .. Homestead is beautiful then you add in a good Banana plant farm and you cant go wrong. They have some good sized plants there. Some time they have a sale also or the buy 2 get one half price .. and those guys who you are going to be talking to are the owners .. Interesting place to go to .....

Grrrr I hate it what that happens! I bought a plant from a yard sale 5 years ago... Guy said it was just like the one in his back yard .. Well it was green and a banana but thats about as close as it got .. he had a small plant with normal size fruit on it . The plant I got grew to 18 feet and produces small fruit (tiny) right next to it is a a dwarf Cavendish (8 feet) Im getting some new plants this month to replace all the larger plants I have .. Great fun to grow and I love them but the wind tears them up and then Im looking as shredded leaves all summer long! beside I want some reds :waving: so thats a good excuse as any..
