Has anyone on the forum grown any of these FHIA varieties? Do they produce HEAVY bunches of fruit?.I wanted to purchase or obtain a variety(williams, cavendish,FHIA,grand nain,etc...) that would produce the HEAVIEST banana bunch of dessert or cavendish type, which should I go for? Thanks,Greenie

I have a FHIA-18 and a FHIA-2..both have fruited once and have had bunches in the 30-50 pound range...excellent taste on both!

None of the FHIA varieties are Cavendish at all, and by no means are all of them dessert varieties, but 'Goldfinger' aka FHIA-1 is a dessert type that can produce massive bunches with proper care, it also probly the easiest to obtain.

Fhia1 Goldfinger is a good banana. Better than the Cavendishes in my opinion. Fhia3 Sweetheart has a large bunch and bigger bananas, and really rich, sweet flavor. Fhia17 had 19-20 hands, but fruit was smaller, and flavor not as good.

I tried one obscure experimental desert variety from FHIA and I noted that the fruits were large, produced many hands, but the fruit was lacking flavor and very bland.

Here is a pic of some goldfinger fruit I have grown..

wow!,I guess from the opinions on the taste, the FHIA is just ok. I think I better do some more research.

Anybody have any goldfinger pups they want to sell? I used to have one but it died over the winter from too much moisture. I wouldn't mind replacing it though. Thanks.

Hey Greenie,
Here is a bunch off of my FHIA-3 (sweetheart) . The flower came out about 3 wks ago. I can't tell you how good they taste, but I've heard good reports. It's darn vigorous though, this was a 1 foot pup planted 06/01/06. Good luck with your search!http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=1880&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=1880)
