View Full Version : I had NO idea I was going to be so paranoid....

Ok, I moved my spot to plant my young basjoos (2) partially because where i was originally going to put them, we have a high population of ground squirrels/gophers, and I had recently planted something there, and with my making the dirt easier on them, they dug more holes in the hole I'd made for the plant. It's near a small building, with a small porch on it, so of course they have holes going underneath that building and porch everywhere!

But, my basjoos were planted late yesterday afternoon in their new spot...and I don't think I could be less paranoid. It's quite windy today, but they're doing fine... but we have storms possible later today, but a greater chance for (severe) storms with high winds and hail tomorrow. Should I cover these guys up? The only thing I can think of is putting tubs over them with concrete blocks over the tubs, to protect from any high wind and hail. I know they are "HARDY" banana trees, but they're young, small, and just planted. And, they're all I have. There was a guy advertising basjoos IN MY TOWN, but he's not answered any of my Emails...thought I could get a couple more for back ups.

Anyway....just wondering if anyone is as crazy as I....would you cover them up if the threat of severe storms with high winds is coming? Just till the weather passes? I'd keep an eye on the weather...and as soon as I know it's coming, is when I'd cover them. That p-stem actually looks to be pretty tough/strong. Maybe some leaves could get lost or shredded, but maybe I have nothing to worry about with the pseudostem? It's small though...about the diameter of one of my fingers...and I don't have fat fingers. I carry the fat cells in other parts of my body...lol!

Maybe I need a :bananas_b

A sturdy 25-gallon tub is one way to mitigate gophers in your area. I would protect them from a hail storm, but not worry about rain. If the stem is long enough to snap in the wind, then consider a temporary support.

If your cold hardiness zone is truly 5a, then the winter will make your current concerns seem trivial.

Oh damn heck Angie, I hope you go on ok and that dratted wind passes you by. And yes I do the same, did the coverup with my old girl Maple. I used fleece bags.

It was horrible, with her being around 7 years old and plenty branches which are tender at best of times. I managed but it took some doing in those wind speeds.

Good luck Angie!!

The wind was in the 30 mph range today...but they made it. One leaf on one is ripped up good...but otherwise they're no worse for wear!
