I'm new to cannas, but been reading up a lot about them. What I know for sure, is I LOVE them! A local greenhouse here has some, nice price for the size (8.99), but they look virused to me. I'm not sure if it's that they are virused, or if it's because they are kept inside, and not receiving sunlight. But the leaves just look quite unhealthy to me....so I decided to avoid the disappointment later. I bought some tubers/bulbs...nothing special, they don't even have a name/variety on them, but nothing's coming up. They weren't what I wanted anyway....
I'm wondering if anyone here has any small ones they are wanting to sell, for a newbie canna admirer. I'm most interested in the striped varieties, tropicana, red stripe, sunburst, but I also like those that have some burgundy on the leaves. I'm one who loves cannas for the leaves, not so much the flowers. I have a perfect, warm, sunny spot to showcase them...and plan to dig up the rhizomes for winter and enjoy them for years to come....
But I'm paranoid about this virus....who to get them from, where, not wanting to spend a lot should I end up with virused plants...etc etc. I just would love a little something to start out with.
Thanks for reading!
Angie
We have a pile of the critters; they're solid yellow though.
We just dug out a couple short plants w/tubers after they encroached into "jasmine territory".
They've been potted but can be easily stuck into a box.
There are a whole bunch of different "canna critters" (as you're no doubt aware); these get to be between 4'- 5' tall with numerous yellow blossoms on each stalk.
You get to Milwaukee at all?

I've got tropicanna, bengal tiger, red stripe, intrigue, and another purple-cast, somewhat striped one that I don't have a name for. I'm getting ready to dig some up for someone and could dig up a few extras.

I don't want to bogart TrailGaiter's thread, but I've been trying to find striped- and black-foliage cannas to trade for a long time: Tropicanna (incl. red, gold, black), Pretoria/Bengal Tiger, Pink Sunburst, Australia, Striped Beauty (a.k.a. Christ's Light). I'm also interested in dark/bronze leafed, like Wyoming and Louis Cottin.
I have a diverse Trade List posted on Dave's Garden with 80+ items. If it's not visible to non-members, just message me here, and I'll send a copy. I also have lots of new lily bulbs I haven't listed yet, especially Oriental and Orienpets -- also, Japanese Morning Glories, Crinums, etc., etc.
Thanks!

I would really be interested in striped and/or burgundy/purple leaved varieties if possible. An idea of asking prices (and if you paypal) would be most excellent too! If I don't know the variety...I can look it up unless you have pics. Pondplantgirl, your photos on your post are AMAZING!
(guess I'm stating the obvious here...but I've been working on collecting some natural-ish pond plants this year as well...not asking for any...but we have a natural kettle pond in our back yard, about an acre in size, and one of the things I was looking up was horsetail...I hear it's horribly invasive, but I saw it at a lake nearby once, and oh is that the neatest looking thing!!! Doubtful I'd do any flowers, lilies, anything like that, we have a lot of turtles in that pond, painted and snappers, and they probably would get disturbed somehow....unless wildflowers on the edge.....so much potential, right now, so many weeds! LOL)

Sorry that I don't have any cannas to offer, but I just wanted to take a moment to suggest looking for "Durban" ... orange flower and stunning varigation of orange, yellow, green, red on the leaves. To me, it looks as beautiful in flower or not.
Best of luck in obtaining your "wish list" plants!

Durban is the same as Tropicanna and Phasion. They are three names for the same plant. There is a similar problem with Bengal Tiger being called Pretoria. I know of someone who had Tropicanna and mistakenly re-purchased it as Phasion from Plant Delights. The photo from Plant Delights showed one leaf range that was quite spectacular and the purchaser thought it was a new variety. There can be quite a range of looks on just one plant.

Rob makes a good point.
There's the same confusion with Striped Beauty which is also known as (and sold as) Bangkok, Minerva and Christ's Light (for the white cross on the yellow bloom).
Its variegation is simpler, so it's not as easy to be misguided by a picture of a particularly showy leaf.

The post about Durban stuck in my mind. I thought I had read somewhere that there was a distinction between it and Tropicanna, so I checked some websites.
Most agree that Durban and Tropicanna are the same, but quite a few say that Durban has red flowers, while Tropicanna has orange flowers.
Here's the classic Tropicanna bloom (still called Durban by this site): California Gardens - Canna Lily Durban - Durban Canna Lily (http://www.californiagardens.com/Plant_Pages/canna_durban.htm)
Here are some sites and pics that show Durban with red blooms:
Canna ( Durban Canna ) (http://www.backyardgardener.com/plantname/pda_e015.html)
Canna News: Canna 'Durban' (http://cannanews.blogspot.com/2010/01/cxanna-durban.html)
Canna 'Durban'*at*San Marcos Growers (http://www.smgrowers.com/products/plants/plantdisplay.asp?region_id=17&plant_id=312&page=)
PlantFiles even says it's red with bronze foliage, which surprises me, since there are a lot of canna lovers on that site (davesgarden.com): PlantFiles: Detailed information on Canna Lily Canna x generalis 'Durban' (http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/37278/)
Extra pic, just for fun -- Did you know Stuttgart (white variegated) can get this tall?!: http://inlinethumb09.webshots.com/45192/1409128712060532864S600x600Q85.jpg

If you look, Dave's garden calls Tropicanna "orange Durban"
I believe that there is a "Red Durban" That's probably what is called "Durban"
In the plant files there are actually 2 entries..."Tropicanna" and "Durban"
Phasion is Definitely the same as Tropicanna, the Phasion I got from PDN actually came with a "tropicanna" tag just like the one's on the ones sold at the box stores.
Giving this one a bump: we have spare canna tubers to share again, (it's a pretty regular occurrence).
Get 'em while they're still snoozing, sorta!
Nothing fancy, just plain yellow w/orange fleck blossoms.
