Hello!
I would like to ask if Jamaican Red,Cuban Red and Tall Red refer to the same cultivar or if they are separate cultivars. If the latter, what are their differences?
I have searched about them but couldnt find anything conclusive on this matter...
Thank you very much in advance!

'Jamaican Red' and 'Cuban Red' normally refer to the dwarf form, also known as 'Dwarf Red'. The 'Tall Red' is normally not called those other names, but I suspect sometimes it is as they are pretty much the same, just different heights. The dwarf typically gets about 6-8ft, while the tall is usually around 10-12ft.

Gabe you saw my Jamaican Reds right? They were very tall with some of the p-stems around 15 feet. I'm not sure if they were that tall yet when you saw them though. I was told by Charles who personally imported them on his boat from Jamaica that they were Jamaican Red. I guess he could have just said they were red and from Jamaica.

This is why common names are not very good to base ID on, they don't really have any weight. There are lots of other names for these bananas (and almost any other banana) too, so the ID really comes from seeing the plant, and then figuring out what are the most popular names for that plant, and trying to keep all of the synonyms in line. At some point in the nearish future, standardized culitvar names for international use will be attempted to be implemented, but it is a very difficult thing to do as they are so many plants which are very similar but have slight mutations which make htem unique and so it helps to have those other names sometimes.

Is there a red variety that produces an edible fruit that is small and fat like a Manzano fruit? Also are the fruit from the Cuban/Jamaican Reds like this or longer like say a Gran Nain fruit?
Thanks in advance.

I just had my first reds this week. I am not impressed. I don't know why everyone loves them so much. They are good, the texture is smooth, but the taste is not much better than cavendish. I don't know what type is but it was a red of some kind, the same length as cavendish but fatter. In my opinion Goldfinger and mysore are much better.

Thank you very much all of you for your replies!
Thank you very much Gabe for clearing up the confusion! So the proper name for every tall banana of the Red group seen is ''Tall Red''? Is there just one Tall Red cultivar or are there more?
From what you said, the Wiki is wrong regarding the Jamaican Tall's height and the pictures posted and should be placed as a synonym for ''Dwarf Red'',right?
Are Mitchel's ''Jamaican Red'' in fact ''Tall Red'' or a different cultivar?
Thank you very much in advance!

Konstantinos, I don't have any pics in the wiki of my reds at full height. They were very tall in their 3rd season! I think Gabe saw them the first year I had them.

Some pics of my reds.
In this pic the lowers wires are about 20 feet off the ground. The p-stems were about 3-4 from the wires making them about 16-17 foot pseudo stems. IMO that is very tall!

Again Reds on the left, Hawaiian Apple/Tall Brazilian on the right. This was the last season I grew the reds. Notice the size of the bunches. the red were a little bigger in fruit size.
