I wanted to start a thread about the progress of all the nanners I got from Chris (Rmplmnz) and keep updating it periodically :-) Here is a picture of the jeep once we had it all loaded.

My protector of the bananas by my Dwarf red.
Here is a list of the varieties I got from Chris, I'm not sure how many links we can include in each post so I guess I will post 3 pics per post! Hopefully this works!
Varieties I got
Praying Hands
Rajapuri
Ice Cream
Lavender Ornata
Saba
Bronze Ornata
Rose
Monkey Fingers
Dwarf Red
Dwarf Brazilian
African Rhinohorn
Pitogo
Mysor
Orinoco
:-) I'm one happy camper :0519: and can't wait for them to grow. I will follow with pics of them in their beds and pots. Alot were also given away to neighbors and friends!

These are planted alongside the house they get all of the mid day sun and are about 4ft apart, hopefully it won't be too close if I remove pups as they come.

Yeap! Once they grow it will be gorgeous!!! I've debated putting another banana bed to the left of the beach as I have one to the right... If I do I can use a few from the pots to put in that bed.
All I need now is an umbrella for the beach LOL that spot is dead on sun!!!

Thank you! The Orinoco actually has 3 pups today! I'm so excited. Some of these I am not sure how they will take the winters here. My plan is to make sure I bring 1-2 pups of each kind inside to preserve just in case. I got these from Chris off the board and he is two hours south of me. I applied worm castings to all of the ones in the ground today so hopefully that will help them out! I have a worm bed, but its not producing its own castings just yet.

Hey Kat, I don't winterize the sabas, only my shorter fruiting bananas like my Raja Puri. They (saba) are pretty cold hardy and come back every year. They started out like your photos small and cute, but beware, they turn into monsters, he he. They are amazing, when people come to my house, they walk straight over to them and their jaw drops and they look up with this amazed look on their face. Happens every time.
I have some photos in my gallery if you care to look.

Have you gotten any fruit on them or is it hopeless in our zone? I need to figure out which of the varieties will be worth covering to try and save for fruiting, did you see the variety list? Any suggestions? Obviously Raja Puri lol, but any others I might be able to cover and save to get fruit? I bought some banana fuel so I'm going to start pouring it on them. I wanted to try and stay totally organic with Compost/Mulch/Leaves like Chris does, but alas I am too impatient hahahahah

Seeing that bananas are very reactive to heat, I decided to cheat a little bit, and add wall o waters on my musa basjoos since they absorb heat, and warm up
the soil whenever there is sunshine. These WOWs have made a huge difference on peppers so this is my way of trying to speed up the progress here.
If I had these I would have removed my winter covering much earlier since these can be used to get an early start on them as well.
I just wished they sold taller ones for plants like bananas. This was from about a week ago, and this plant has since rolled out another leaf.

Kat
I am kinda in the process of the winterizing thing. Last year I winterized a couple of Raja Puri and it worked real good. The Dwarf cavendish did'nt fair so well but they were young and had'nt been planted too long. I have had saba to fruit but it was such a long time rippening that winter came before they made it. I'm gonna concentrate my efforts to Ice Cream, Raja, Dwarf Namwah, Dwarf Cavendish and Goldfinger next year. I would really like to get the Namwah to fruit. My goldfinger were not very cold hardy either. Ice Cream was pretty cold resistant for me last year.
Hope this helps.

You have made a wonderful garden with all those bananas from Chris, Kat!!!!! He must be a great guy to meet up in person!
Regarding winterizing, what are your lows? My Ice Cream made it through -3,5C unprotected this past winter, retaining more than 90% of its pseudostem. It saw a good 4-5 nights of constantly below 0C temperatures. If you see comparable temperatures in your area or even colder but dont stay at those or below freezing the whole night, then you will only have to protect a few very tender ones like Dwarf Red,Raja Puri,African Rhinohorn,Pitogo, and maybe Mysore(?) and Monkey Fingers(?) to have all varieties retain their pseudostems through winter.Ice Cream,Saba,Orinoco,Praying Hands(supposedly) and Dwarf Brazilian, along with the Ornata, all are more than capable to withstand temperatures like those i mentioned while retaining their pseudostems and so being able to flower at some point. But wether the fruit will mature or not, that depends on the timing of the flowering as any late bunches will probably be lost at such temperatures.

The lowest we got was around -4C and this was only a few nights and its not common that it happens. I have a few against the house and it might be possible to make a lean to hot house to protect those and I have all of the tender ones against the house. Then I guess I could pot up some and put them under there too! Hmmm lol the wheels are turning. I have months to decide. My other idea is to dig 2-3 pups of each variety and store the corms inside just to insure that I keep all of the varieties. Any thoughts?

So, these WOW warm up the soil, or you think they warm up the heat too? At what point do you put these on? I have ALOT of bananaas LOL, but this might be worth a try on some of them after winter. Right now my temps are pretty good we're getting to high 50s at night and today we're up to 89 and 91 tomorrow so its warming back up

Was it -4C the whole night or just before sunrise? If it was just before sunrise and the lowest ever you can get, then only the tender varieties are worth protecting and maybe just for the first winter, take 1-2 pups of each variety inside to see how the unprotected ones do. Just be sure to take the pups early to let the corms heal before cold arrives and rot can set in....
A lean to hothouse would benefit the tender ones a lot and you could possibly even keep their bunches through winter if its tall enough. There are other ways to protect the pseudostems of the tender ones but involve more labor each year and are riskier than a lean to hothouse.

That was the coldest it got and it wasn't sustained the whole night. How early before frost should I take the corms? I plan on only allowing 2 pups per main stalk so I will be collecting throughout the summer/fall and should have them for sure. Is there a point at which time I need to stop removing corms so that the corm is not in danger when frost comes? I was thinking for the hothouse to make it the height of the house and I could come off of the roof. So that will probably give me about 10ft in height. I don't think our soil freezes and I have layers of mulch on top of the corms as well as thick compost which I could refresh before the first freeze as well. I want to start thinking now so I have a few months to decide and get supplies LOL!

My wall o waters are only used here because of the cool climate which is well below what bananas need in order to grow at the full potential, but I am noticing better performance when I use them since I don't use them on all my plants. They do make plants grow faster.

I would stop collecting pups 1-2 months before cool and rainy weather sets in. That would give the corms time to compartmentalize the damage and time for the pups to establish new roots and grow a little before winter.
10ft will be enough for the Dwarf Red but the others may exceed this mark by some more feet and that would be just the pseudostem. So with that height, you will not be able to keep their bunches overwinter but you will be able to save a good deal of pseudostem to get flowers again next season.
I dont think your corms of hardy varieties have any chance of getting cold damage at your climate, the only risk is with rot. The pseudostems should also handle brief -4C temperatures without much damage.

Ok that gives me a good idea, for me that will be around October... I might be able to build it up higher than the roof LOL I will see how tall they are in October and try to gauge from that what I am going to do. I had two no names last year and they both came back but died to the ground. I didn't mulch them or anything though, but this year I will have a big prep coming up lol!

The Sabas seem to be the slowest coming up and I think I have lost one whole row on the inside of the fence :( I mixed water crystals into the soil mix with manure etc. That's the only issue I can think of

You can see the ones by the road are going nutso! The Monkey fingers leaf is coming up and the Praying hands is nice... The saba FINALLY shot up about 6" from where we cut it!! The orinoco babies are doing great

I haven't posted any pics of this Saba yet as it was sitting still the pseudo looks rough it has a bit of green but half the stalk is mushy around the outside. However, today I noticed this pup! YAY! Any suggestions should I cut the main stalk since it seems to be struggling now that I have a pup coming up??

Same story here with the Bronze this is the only one I think that is alive. I thought it was dead the main stem looks pretty much rotten. Should I cut that now that I see two babies coming up? You can see one in front and one in back just popped up today.

From my experience so far,its normal for some pups to take 2-3weeks to start showing any growth at all as they must first root. Others start growing from day 1,as you experienced first hand. I would say cut back a little on watering the ones with mushy pseudostems and possibly remove the mushy tissue if it doesnt dry fast on its own.
Even the totally brown and dead looking one have good chances of showing growth or pupping eventually! I wouldnt cut anything yet till the pups or the main plant grow to be an established young plant with many leafs. That would give them the best chances and the fastest growth!
I hope even the slow ones show growth for you soon!!!

Kat I'm sorry that you lost some banana plants. I almost lost my Orinoco pups. The soil was staying too wet so I dug them up and the middle of the corm rotted so I had 2 separate clumps. I planted them in a flowerbed with amended soil and they are now starting to grow again.

These have been in the ground about 5 weeks now and the main stem is pretty rotten. They were pups but HUGE pups like 5" base stalks... the mother on this one had a tip of green which today turned brown. So, I was thinking if I cut off the main one more energy would go into the pup...

Bananas take back nutrients from dying pseudostems so it may be best to leave it as it is. I dont think it will get too much affected if you really want to cut it though.
Even if its all brown right now,the motherplant may still recover and grow. When their emerging leaf turns from green to brown, its from rot, usually of roots or corm. Otherwise,it would never do that. So you may want to ease back on watering a bit.
Btw,your bananas are getting awesome to look at!!!

Thanks I appreciate it :D Let me know when you're ready for some more bananas! I had some outrageous water bills these past few months (over $100) to keep them all watered! I also hand water everything which takes forever LOL! Next year mulch them good, I did compost, manure, and mulch then top it off with manure... I'm getting ready to start raking since the leaves are falling.... Oh the joys LOL !

This year everything is just getting settled in. I believe your climate is very similiar to mine. If we have a reasonable winter next year this time you will not be able to see the side of house anymore. Be careful with the Sabas. Huge is not an appropriate size description. After a bad winter that P-stem has to come down. What wakes you up and shakes your house in the middle of the night? Ask Bo AKA Hydroid?
oakshadows
10-08-2011, 08:06 PM
Cameron, It might be good for you to use drip irrigation as it uses less water and can be easier controlled. Mulch is a must and thicker is better but not too close to the stem. We grow in containers and they require more water if not set up correctly. If plants are in the ground then it might be good for you to replant and add a large amount of compost to the whole before planting. Sometimes a lot of work but it will of benefit to the plant and to the harvest. Adding perlitie to the soil will also add some moisture holding capacity. Good luck.

LOL @ Darkman about the Sabas (those are one variety that isn't beside the house :D) I've seen Chris's (Rmplmnz) and they're HUGE... I can not imagine one coming down suddenly! I'm hoping they all fair well through the winter and yeah I imagine I'm pretty much like your climate. Do you have any p-stems make it through the winter without protection? I know I'm going to dig my Dwarf Reds, but are there any other really tempermental ones I should dig???
@Willow - I hand water everything that I have. I followed Chris's example when I planted I tilled in compost and then after planting I piled on more compost and topped off with mulch. Now I'm beginning to rake as the leaves are starting to fall and piling those on top as well. Chris piles TONS of leaves / compost / mulch every year. It begins piled so high and then by the end of the season its flatted out (mine that is lol! I had mounds and now its almost flat so time to add more leaves and compost!) I also added some of the water crystals to two of the beds and EVERY banana in there died except for one saba I think having that in there with newly dug bananas I rotted them out :( I think if I had planted one that had been potted they might have been ok.

I really do need to start doing drip irrigation. Is it an expensive set up? I have a flowerbed that I need to amend so I can plant bananas there next year. I found some 40lb bags of a compost/green sand/ lava sand mixture, and perlite is definitely a must because I have clay soil. I need to come up with a better plan so I don't have a repeat of this year

Darkman is right, we had a dying Saba come down in some wind one night and we thought a big pine tree fell in the yard, with all that water weight they are really heavy also. It shook the whole house.

The Saba that fell was because of the hard winter and it just could'nt bounce back during the spring, I kept thinking it would pull through but when they are that big, they loose the elasticity of being fully green. It looked pretty brown and too brittle.

Unfortunately I had to remove the pictures for personal reasons; an interesting read all the same.
Lessard had traveled the globe accumulating over 100 different species planted on 5 acres in Homestead, Fl.
This article references the sale; but only mentions 35 banana varieties:
Miami Food and Drink Examiner: Going Bananas grows bananas.
Going Bananas grows bananas - Miami Food and Drink | Examiner.com (http://www.examiner.com/food-and-drink-in-miami/going-bananas-grows-bananas)
Article excerpt:
Learning from Lessard
The Chafins bought their property in 1994. Also that year they purchased most of the banana stock – some 35 varieties – from William O. Lessard, a nearby grower who was retiring. Lessard had been growing bananas in a converted squash field he purchased in 1968.
Lessard and his wife, Suzie, were among the first vendors to participate in the Coral Gables Farmers Market, which began in 1991. That’s where I met them. My yard still has banana trees I bought from them.
In 1992, Lessard wrote and self-published a 119-page book, The Complete Book of Bananas, that is still one of the best available books on bananas. It’s now out of print, but Amazon.com and bookfinder.com sometimes offer it. The supply always was limited, and today it is very expensive. Lessard says that he intends to update and reprint it.

Yes, very cool that Bill Lessard personally hand collected many/most of the specimens within his grove.
Following is an interesting quote from Pitangadiego's web site:
ORINOCO
"The name 'Orinoco' is due to W. O. Lessard who first encountered the plant growing by the Orinoco River. Lessard was a pioneer banana nurseryman in Florida who wrote a very influential but sometimes inaccurate book on bananas."

Mostly time consuming but when you get set up it will save time and maybe a few plants that might have gotten neglected. So with all of the time you saved you can go and find more plants to grow. Vicious cycle. They also have some info on how to get set up. Good luck.

I'm definitely going to read into. I lost quite a few plants and that may have saved them. I had the issue of my corms rotting during spring. I amended the soil with composted cow manure and I thought that would help but the corm rotted. That area dried out so bad this summer, I can hardly dig into it. I just gave up watering for the most part lol

Cameron, Compost is good but drainage is of an important factor. If your soil doesn't drain good then you might think of raising the height of the plant so the soil can do so. Here, my problem is that the soil percolates very well and moisture has to be keep by means of compost and mulch. Drips work well but all else is need to be attended to also. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I've heard of people using Perlite but I was wondering how much would I have to use for a small flowerbed?

Tons and tons of oak tree leaves. Holds moisture and decomposes enriching the soil. I have at least a 8" thick layer over the entire bed.

Thanks Darkman. I think I'm going to look around town to see if anyone has any bags of oak leaves. I use hackberry leaves but they decompose very quickly

Once a year..but it takes several months to complete.
I add about 5 tons of leaves a year
5 tons of tree mulch
7-8 tons of horse manure

I collect bags of leaves in the early spring. That is when the oaks drop there old leaves here. Two to three days a week for four to five hours a day for about three months. I literally have easily over two thousand bags by the end of leaf season. I'm down to about 100 bags right now and they will be gone when I winterize. I separate the oak leaves from pine straw too. I use the pine straw for the winterizing too as it is lighter and a little better insulator. It is the airspace that makes good insulation and the straw stays dryer. I'm starting to get in gear for this as the colder temps are starting to sneek in the now. Low of 46 tomorrow.

The last two years have been tough going for collecting leaves...so many households in Tampa have had to cut down all of the tropicals that died the last two winters and everything is all mixed together.

I get a lot of junk mixed in with mine sometimes. Every bag is like Cracker Jacks. It comes with a surprize. I found some pretty bizzarre things in the bags.

Well the one nice thing about that is the cool things you find sometimes LOL (trying to put a positive spin on things) If you need some help picking up some leaves let me know!

Ha ha..I know the feeling...I have never planted an EE...they just show up..Kat ("Dreamofthetropics") asked me for the botanical names of the EE's I gave her...I have no idea as they are all volunteers from bags of leaves.....

I have a volunteer Watermelon that there is a good chance it came from bags of leaves I dumped. It is a large fruited variety, probably a charleston grey. I have had three off of it so far and have three more large ones ready and about twelve small ones still growing.

So, I haven’t updated in a LONG time! I only have one banana photo today to share and also photos of my new greenhouse. We put the plastic on today. We haven’t framed the ends, but we’re getting there. My poor yard has been neglected the last couple months with work and school taking forefront. I now am done with the semester and going to take a few months break from school! So, hopefully I will have more photos to share with everyone shortly and will be able to post more on bananas! I miss my friends on here and chatting! I miss my yard too LOL! So, the first photo is my Lavender Orinata taken today blooming beautifully out in the yard! The rest are the new greenhouse (with my kids inside) and also my tangerine’s that were the only ones really left on the tree (they were hidden behind canna’s we cut back to the ground today!)

Well now I know I am going to grow papaya. You live in a place a little cooler than here and yours cam back so I guess I can do it too.
I wish I had as much room as you to plant. Looks fun.

Looking beautiful, all of the hard work is paying off and looking great. Get that hot tub going, it can sure change an attitude. Hoping to get up to see you soon, all of my time is spent doing what you have done but I'm much slower. Thanks

The hot tub is up and running as of tonight YAY! Finally quit relying on friends and called in the pros! It was going in an hour. Yeah they will be giants for sure this year! Now that the tub is up I have to clean up all around it from the disaster of moving it in and installing it plus the ditch dug throughout 100 feet of my back yard for electrical wiring! The kids have a half day tomorrow, so we will be working on some clean up tasks!

I will post photos soon, but wanted to post because I wanted to get everyones opinion on what to do. I am digging an Orinoco that is out front by the street and also a Monkey Fingers as I have another Mat of both doing better in other locations. I want to plant one of the ones that I don't have in the ground yet there but I'm not sure what!
Update: The Raja Puri you can now see the bananas which is VERY exciting for all of us and we now have a paddle and flag leaf on one of our praying hands it's actually one of our smaller ones so we are hoping the other ones are soon to follow!
Here are the varieties that I do not have in the ground but have in my possession that can be planted. Mind you some of these I know I might have to dig and I'm fully able to do so as we did it with our Dwarf Reds last year. Here are the varieties that are not in the ground. I will be able to choose two possibly three of these to go in the ground. Let me know what would be your picks and why!
Manzano
Ae Ae
Dwarf Puerto Rican
Pisang Juri Buaya
TaNee
Velutina
Golden Aromatic
SH 3640
Ice Cream
Those I believe are the only ones I have that are not in the ground! I appreciate everyones feedback on what should go in the ground! We dug up several Dwarf Reds and hauled them in and out and we also have a greenhouse now that we can dig and put into the ground!

FYI,
Dwarf Puerto Rican = Dwarf Puerto Rican "Plantain"...:-)
I would say "GA"...did you see the "size" (huge raceme with large hands and fingers) of the fruit in my video?

I would go with the Ice Cream and any semi cold hardy dwarf. I think the Dwarf Reds are a great canidate and I would not dig them instead I would protect them. IMHO

After looking at your Raja Puri I think my Goldfinger may be a Raja Puri. What do you think?

So, I just read through the whole thread and WOW LOL I don't realize how much things have grown until I go back to day 1. I just wanted to say THANKS to Chris for everything you have given us and the pleasure of getting to visit you and check out all your amazing plants. I appreciate it more than you will ever know. Also, to everyone who has commented and watched everything grow with me THANK YOU! I love to be able to share with everyone. I am IMPATIENTLY waiting for my Praying Hands bud to open. So, I hope everyone's nanners and other things are growing as well as mine and hope to share many more photos soon!:nanadrink:
