I just thought I'd say hi! I've been lurking on the forum for a little bit, to get the hang of things...and now here I am!

I am a huge lover of all things tropical, although, unfortunately, I live in zone 5, southern Wisconsin. But I have a couple of young basjoos just waiting to go outside....this will be my first try with anything like this. I've really never planted much of anything until last year when I got "the bug." And then it was all easy, zone appropriate things!

I've also grown quite fond of ensete, the red ones....and have been insanely researching those........reading everything I can get my eyes on....considering the idea....if I find a place to put them, and figure out my winter storage.

I'm also (off topic) crazy in love with cannas...but perhaps with bananas, that's enough to plunge into for one year...we'll see. Hubby might not appreciate my basement becoming consumed with over wintering tropicals! lol

Thanks for reading, I'm very excited for my basjoos to go outside! I've been getting them used to going out, by putting them out on nice sunny days, but we've seen the sun so very little this month, when we do, we're in a trance! We're still getting some nighttime lows in the 30's...so not ready to put the little guys out there just yet!

I am liking finding more and more banana fanatics living further north than me. Seems like there has been a rash of you guys of late. I have only been considering bananas and pineapples, bamboo etc. for a few short years and have not been much encouraged until here of late and I like it. The more I see what you guys are doing. The less I worry about what I want to do!
I can't afford to go to the tropics much, so maybe, we can bring some of the tropics back here.
I have a 25 year old grapefruit tree that my mother started from a seed after a morning fruit snack, etc. I have aloe plants that have grown out of their pots so many times and cactii as old as me (5%4#&86@~+god). But in the last year I've become the tender of 2 musa basjoos, 2 super dwarf cavendish "sdc", 1 dwarf cavendish "dc", 1 sumatrana x gran nan musa and 1 musella lasiocarpa/dasycarpa chinese yellow And I am starting to really hate the COLD!
Anyway welcome Angie from Wisc and I hope you have a great year

Thanks for the replies! It took me seeing others in zone 5 (and even 4!) growing basjoos for me to think, if they can do it...perhaps I can too! I would love a palm more than anything......just not ready to put in the work for one of those yet....I'll stick with my bananas for now, and some cannas if I can find what I'm looking for relatively inexpensively, and if I manage not to kill anything, maybe in a year or two (or three), and that much time doing more research, I can try a windmill palm perhaps!

If family wasn't all here, we'd be moving to Tennessee Stumpy! lol
