Does anyone know a fix for this split screen problem. This happens every now and then. The only way I've been able to fix it is to shut down the computer for 4 hours or so .

I dunno Tony, but I'd try putting your icon at bottom of upper 1/2 page till it shows a arrow pointing up & down, then drag it down.

Didn't work .You probably can't see it in the pic.The display does not fill the whole screen. I have two separate displays of the same thing along with two arrows

What OS you running? XP, Vista, Windows 7?

XP I turned the computer off and back and it's back to normal. This usually doesn't solve the problem.

Right click on My Computer, go to Properties, Hardware, Device Manager, Display Adapters. Should be listed under there.

latest drivers for your video card
Intel® Driver Update Utility for graphics drivers (http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect/graphics)

And bios? (Don't know what model of machine you have in order to post the link)

Ahh.. so is it a laptop with an external monitor? If so, do you close the lid to the laptop while the machine is powered on?

In order to find the right bios version, we'll have to use the model number located on the bottom of the machine:

No external monitor Closing the lid does sometimes cause the split screen

ok.. try updating your video driver, reboot, then try to recreate the problem. XP has a hard time with monitor switches.. more so than Windows7. (I only run XP on my machines)
Do you have a function key that has CRT/LCD on it? Like one of the "F" keys along the top?

ok.. so when you close the lid of your notebook and re-open it, the screen on the notebook is split?

It looks like the display button on your laptop might be F2.. is there a picture of what looks like a monitor on it? If so, next time your machine does the split screen thingy, hold the Fn Key (bottom row, second from left.. in between the Ctrl key and the Windows key) and while holding it, press the F key that has a picture of the monitor. You may have to do this 3 times, it will probably turn your monitor black the first couple times.
What this does is make your notebook 'seek' for different display devices (external monitor, projector etc..) and when it does this it sets the resolution to the correct setting.
A silly work around but better than rebooting. I will see if I can find a better fix but from my days as a tech, I remember coming across this a few times on XP notebooks.

Yes F2 has monitor pic. Tried the above ,nothing happens.

Odd nothing happened when you held down Fn and F2.. should have given you at least a black screen.
Have you gotten the latest video drivers?
have you tried right clicking on the desktop and selecting refresh?

I'm bananas over mine too!

They cost a little more up front but you just don't get all the crazy problems. If you do - you have a phone number to call or a genius bar to help. I have never had a problem. In the long run they are cheaper, 'cause you can keep 'em way longer. I Love Macs!

While you may not have this particular issue with your mac, replacing the machine is not really what the OP is looking for.
Yes.. google is helpful.. if you know what to look for and can decipher. I will continue to look and update you with whatever I find.
