I think right in the middle, where that shovel is, would be a good spot. It will allow the palm to grow to greatest size possible and would look really beautiful!

I concur with Alex. it would really show well with the white wall as a backdrop.

I think that looks great! Add some shrubs and smaller palms to make a nice row and it should look great!

Towards the door and towards the house a bit. So that it is centered with the wide part of the white wall that is in between the door and window.

I would get rid of the Fan Palm

I think where the fan palm is would be the best location.. anywhere else it will obstruct the view from and to your house too much.

Can I help to or have you decided? Your front yard looks like a perfect rectangle. Are you going to landscape the entire yard? Are you wanting to make this palm a focal point? Are you wanting to get rid of the large palm or just think the new one would look good there? I don't think I would plant it in front of the house unless you want to cover up your house. I would plant this one in the corner closest to the street (by the van). Then I would work out away from that corner in curves to soften the straight lines and rectangles. Does this make sense? What other plants are you going to use besides the passion vine?

Sure you can help. I'm thinking about removing the Windmill Palm and planting the Bismarckia in that area. I just planted this Pindo Palm near the van.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=42187&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=42187&ppuser=2868)

I may plant one or two other lower growing Palms and then some flowering plants. I would like to keep it simple and not have it be a jungle like my back yard. There will be a dry river bed running from the downspout to the sidewalk and a wrought iron fence surrounding the yard, for Scooter. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Wherever you decide to plant the Bismarkia, you must remember that it will get about a 3' dia trunk and about 12'-15' crown spread. These Bismarkias grow rather quickly and get HUGE. I dont think you would be wise to plant it anywhere near where you will be wanting to walk (then you have to continuously be cutting away the fronds in your way until it reaches a height above your head). And It wouldnt be good too close to your roof line or any other power lines that may be present.

Probably wasn't the best choice of Palms but there so nice I couldn't help but get one . No power lines or underground to worry about.I'll plant it at least 10' from the house or sidewalk. Thanks

I'm a visual and color person, so I have been looking around for you. Here is a nice front yard with the dry river bed and Spanish style home.

You can easily use plants you like and put mulch or pebbles if you don't want any green lawn. Picture your fencing instead of the stucco walls.

This one isn't puppy dog friendly with the large cactus, but you can substitute your palm tress for the cacti.

I think you should keep the windmill palm. I dont think the crown of a bismarkia palm would get too enormous in your climate. They love warm humidity. Here's an example of them in one of their favorite types of climates (Orlando, Florida).....
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/April%20Vacation%202011/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_2026.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/April%20Vacation%202011/IMG_2026.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I really dont think you have to worry about it getting that huge because the crown won't be that wide until after it is a few feet above the ground which means that it should be just high enough above the ground to let people pass underneath (and you can always cut a frond or 2 if its a real problem).

I'd put it just right of the door under the wall area with the funny holes in it, and 2 to 2 1/2 ft away from the wall.

Those are beautiful Bismarkias. They are some of the nicest in California (I think they are in Balboa Park). With good care, I think your bismarkia will look just as nice!
And I like the idea of the dragon fruit climbing up the windmill palm. The fibers will really help keep the dragon fruit in place.

Maybe put the Bismark about here. Then you don't have to get rid of the other palm. You can use some short stuff to make circular patterns to contrast with the lines of the house if you wanted to.
