Hi members,
As I am still looking for musa ornata "Milky Way"

I were told the musa ornata "Milky Way" were disappearing from nurseries in world and seems confined to Thailand.

Musa ornata "Milky Way" were heading toward extinction in USA and Austria & Europe.

Resently Plant-Group told me they no longer have "Milky Way".

The owner of Achim's banana shop were a very bad man and were rude to a member of Bananas.org & abused him. He had money budgeting problems.
He also stealing money from his friends & owners of nurseries & some members of Bananas.org by tricked them into send money to him by lying to them.

Gina Anne (Lilith) is only woman in USA I know, to had growing musa ornata "Milky Way" at her place, but she is not helpful and is not willing to sell or give away to members of Bananas.org. Few years ago I got angry with her when she made an exuse by said "sorry, I do not do international mailing."

A woman named Linda (Lindra-GEL) lives in Austria and was a helpful woman and would like to send me some musa ornata "Milky Way", but her plants had not produced suckers yet. I been very helpful toward her & adviced her about how to grow musa ornata "Milky Way". I have to wait for 1-2 next years before I get suckers from her. She know about Achim's banana shop.

I worried I not able to import tissue cultures of musa ornata "Milky Way" to New Zealand and if I cannot get hold of musa ornata "Milky Way", the plants will be extinct in 10 years time from now.

The banana plant breeder Cheesman had died 50 years ago.
He hybridized musa velutina and musa flaviflora and then backcrossed them to produce hybrid "Milky Way"
I do not know about musa flaviflora were a wild banana plant and may be an other name for either musa ornata or musa velutina.

I were planning to hybridize pink-flowered musa ornata and musa velutina & backcross the hybrid plants to try to breed "Milky Way" at my place.
That will take years.

Unless we must save musa ornata "Milky Way" these plants will face extinction.

This means I must have them by Sept this year.

To export the plants means they need to be tissue cultured and tissue cultures will be send to New Zealand to me.

:goteam: PLEASE do NOT let the musa ornata "Milky Way" heading toward extinction.

Cheers

Clinton. :waving:

To grow musa ornata "Milky Way"

The soil around "Milky Way" need to be 60% sand and 40% loam soil / compost. Sand drain fast while loan soil drain slowly.

Since you only just got a sucker of "Milky Way", Buy the bag of sand and find the site by south wall (get most sun) & mix sand with soil / compost, use shade to mix. Then plant the "Milky Way" sucker. Then spread the 1.cm. layer of sand on soil around "Milky Way" as sand get hot from heat of sun, help warming the soil.
Water & feed them during summertime as you will want to harvest the suckers for planting in pots to hold them in your hothouse/greenhouse for wintertime and plant outdoor next year.

Hardy rhodochlamys for zone 9
musa velutina
musa mannii
musa ornata
musa siamensis
musa laterita
musa aurantiaca

Very nice of you to save musa ornata "Milky Way" from extinction by plant it at your place.

Cheers

Clinton.

There is only one Musa ornata, and it has pink/purple bracts and green immature fruit. All of the other plants called "M. ornata" are either other species or man-made hybrids.

The names should be written as (for example) Musa 'Milky Way', as they are cultivars which do not originate from a single species. Musa ornata is a valid species, and making a hybrid with it does not mean all of the offspring are different forms of M. ornata, they are hybrids, many of them of unknown origin/pedigree.

I hate to be a wet blanket but this comment has distressed me since I was alerted to it. The removal of plants from a botanical garden without permission is still considered THEFT and AGAINST THE LAW in the United States and Orlando.

We have been wanted to propagate that clump of bananas but it has not been thriving for a few years. It seems to be doing better now but if suckers are STOLEN then this will prove difficult for me to start new plants.

Leu Gardens has been more accessible for the public to obtain cuttings, etc WITH permission, than other botanic gardens. But too often plants have been stolen in the past; cycads, palms, bananas, variegated clivia, roses, etc.

I think most people would agree they would not prefer to have people steal rare plants out of their own yards. This happens too frequently in other botanic gardens and even private collections. Recent cycad thefts in California have shown this. Leu Gardens is owned and operated by the City of Orlando. We are caretakers to the collections but theft makes it even more difficult. It might be just one "little" offshoot but if everyone took one then there would be no garden to maintain.

Now we will be more vigilant about are rare banana plants for thefts. We have enough problems with some bananas here (nematodes, hurricanes, squirrels, etc.) and then worry about theft. A good example was our previous 'Ae Ae' its a difficult enough banana to grow but several times as a new offshoot began to develop, it would promptly disappear. Now we have none.

Encouragement of theft should not be tolerated. Leu Gardens does not tolerate it lightly either and neither should the Moderaters in this forum.

Leu Gardens is where I was referring to. Amazing!
I read the backlog when I was there, I would never steal from Leu. The last time I was there, the Citrus trees were ready for picking and we asked someone if we could have a few lemons and the man said "Yes, wait a min" and came back with a ladder and removed 4 good looking lemons for us. We even tried to give him a tip and he kindly refused.

There was a pineapple plant I seen through out the Garden that looked like mine. When I tried to get more info from the lady at the desk she only had a little bit of info and informed me that certain times of the year they actually do a Plant sale and will sell some stuff. She did not mention what would be for sell or how much.

I really enjoy walking around, Their Rose garden is the biggest I have ever seen. I need to go back soon and get some good pictures.

Now I know Leu started the garden many years ago, his wife loved Camellias and they can be found through out the park. I would never do anything to hurt or destroy Leu's Garden because I want my kids to enjoy it as well as all the people iv never meet. If I was at the park and seen someone digging out a plant that didn't work there I would make a fuss.

Honestly I thought the mention of me using a razor would give away the joke. I think it would be pretty hard to remove a corm with a mini razor knife. I understand your point on this matter, and honestly feel bad that people are really stealing plants from the Garden.

Which reminds me, Leu Gardens has a low chill blue berry called Misty. I have been trying to get my hands on one. But to this day Leu is the only one I know that has one. I wish I could buy some rooted cuttings from them!

I also did not know Leu Gardens was owned by the City of Orlando, but it is close to the Orlando Science Center. It was very cool to go see dinosaur bones, then have a picnic at Leu Gardens.

Hi,
Few years ago I sloved the problem of people stealing my young banana plants in my new banana plantations & roadside gardens, by tied the thorny gorse twigs around the plants, so how do thieves likes getting their hands hurt by grab the plants with thorny twigs.

Collect the gorse twigs, longer & thorny the better and tie the gorse twigs around your young banana plants.

Thieves will stop steal your plants once they yell "ouch !" when they touch the plants.

Hope this works.

Cheers

The Leu's donated the property to the City of Orlando back in 1961 to be maintained as a public Garden. Mr. Leu's main interest were camellias and Leu Gardens has one of the largest camellia collections in the U.S.

I hope to get some divisions going off the 'Milky Way' this summer. I'll give you a holler when any root !

Is that the place with a sign about alligators along the water, and has a big green tree with a LOT of thorns on the trunk?

Or, is it the place with a boardwalk that goes through a waterway with lots of tropical plants?

Seven past years later and I still did not got seeds or cultured tissues of musa ornata "Milk Way" !

Worst is the bad person Amanda (alemily) I asked the person to send me the fresh seeds of "Milky Way", but the person made an excuse by said " I do not ship seeds outside USA"
I got very angry with Amanda and told Amanda about I had been waited for 17 past years for seeds to be available to me and "Milky Way" were the most difficult plants for both USA people and people outside USA, to look for and to get, and Amanda did not listened to me and said the same excuse "I do not ship seeds outside USA"

: PLEASE do NOT let the musa ornata "Milky Way" heading toward extinction.

Extinction is a term for species, not cultivars. Further, seeds of a banana cultivar will not sprout entirely true to type.

I asked the person to send me the fresh seeds of "Milky Way", but the person made an excuse by said " I do not ship seeds outside USA"

If you knew the laws, fees, and fines for exporting plant material from the U.S. perhaps you would not complain.

Extinction is a term for species, not cultivars.

You are right for a change. I had to look it up:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
ex·tinc·tion

/ikˈstiNG(k)SH(ə)n/

noun

1. the state or process of a species, family, or larger group being or becoming extinct.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

But, it is correct to say, "The cultivar will become extinct.", because there is a loophole in the dictionary:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
ex·tinct

/ikˈstiNG(k)t/

adjective

•no longer in existence.
"an extinct language"

Seed for Musa ornata should be fine to send. I checked the MPI Biosecurity Index and they are fine for import into New Zealand. Did you ever manage to get any? Strange that they would not ship seed to you! I'm keen to purchase a pup. I see there is a person on ebay selling seeds as well.

Be careful buying seeds on eBay. Most here in the US are fake!

Rarepalmseeds and Mark Davies are awesome sources for seeds!

I grow Milky Way! It’s finally starting to get ok sized! I plan on planting in the ground here in a month or so. It’s been a slow grower for me!

Wow, what a blast from the past to come on and read my name from 2009 and hear that someone is/was angry at me for not being willing to ship a banana plant to them through the International mail. I have been absent not only from this forum but from taking care of my (rather large) collection of (some rare some not) plants for 10 years. Almost since this original post was made. Because I had an illness in my family that made it necessary for me to kind of drop all but the most basic care of my plants, and drop all of my social media with my plant hobby, and drop all of my trading and going to plant sales, and all of my memberships in plant organizations, to deal with one on one 24/7 for the last 10 years. Its gotten better, so much so that last August, I was finally able to start to come back to my hobby. Clinton, if you are still around, I stopped trading plants even before that happened with people who do not also live in the state of FLORIDA because the USA agricultural regulations have gotten so strict that it has made almost any instance where a normal person who sends a plant that has any roots on it (and some states, just ANY PLANT cutting rooted or whatever) is actually BREAKING THE LAW because they do not possess a valid NURSERY LICENSE. So I am sorry you were angry that I would not spend time digging up, sanitizing, packing and going down and spending $35 USD for a single Phytosanitary certification, then obtaining an export permit to legally mail it out of the country, and spending an exorbitant amount of money on postage to mail it over seas. During my absence from plant maintenance, I developed a new indoor hobby, beadwork. I sometimes buy beautiful glass cabochons from a glass artist in LATVIA. She can send ME the glass piece for $5 by her postal system. If there was a problem and I needed to send it back, it would cost me $62.50. I am sorry if you never got a Musa Milky way. If its any consolation to you, I lost mine while I was busy being a caretaker for my ill family member. So now neither one of us have one.
