Do you love them too, and want to grow them? :goteam:

Maybe you've grown them before? :08:

What are your favorites ???

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/strawberries.jpg

Personally I love everbearing types and I have seeds for one in particular called "Temptation". It's got few runners and more berries, and it's most ideal for a hanging basket. The berries are big and delicious.

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/hangingbasket.jpg

I also love Alpine types. Even though they're smaller, the flavor is unsurpassable. I've grown them in the garden as well as in pots. Here's an Alpine seedling today that I'm growing...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC03058.jpg

I'm actually growing it in my aero-garden but I give the seedling real sunlight each day. ;)

...and what about strawberry jam!

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/jam.jpg

Or my personal favorite...

Drop in, if you have an interest in growing strawberries. :2216:

We can discuss some good growing techniques and maybe even trade some seeds...

So glad you like the thread, Greg! Looking forward to your pictures. ;)

Strawberry plants have very shallow roots so be sure to keep yours well watered. They also like to be fed as well and prefer a pH of 5.8-6.5.

Keep the weeds away from them in the garden.

You'll get 5-10 quarts of berries per 10' row. They prefer rich, well-drained, sandy loam.

Strawberry shortcake is my favorite. I posted a shot of one, in the first post (although not my own), that just about made me drool! :ha:

Here's my strawberry pot, but it had herbs growing in it at the time...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/scan0002-2.jpg

It's enormous, with 8 holes...plus the top! It's super heavy as well. I've mostly grown herbs in it indoors, because I've been afraid to put it out and have it stolen. It was really expensive and I hope I have it forever. It's already 7 years old. I'm going to grow strawberries in it again next June, at my new place when I move.

Here's a picture of a wild Alpine type like the one I'm growing this season...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/wildalpine.jpg

The berries are smaller but the flavor is way more intense than regular kinds.

Wow, you've got a lot of strawberries growing, Greg! :goteam:

Are they all the same kind? Do you know the variety? Looks like you're going to have tons of them! Looking forward to watching them develop and grow. Your shots are terrific. ;)

It looks like this. Although I'm not sure of the exact species. I hope they are edible. Or else I'm going to have to buy some plants after seeing this thread lol. Er. I'm not going to eat them. I grew some real ones two years ago and after seeing all those earwigs climb all over, I don't think I want to. Heheh.

Duchesnea indica A (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Duchesnea_indica_A.jpg) [Public domain], by Wouter Hagens (Own work), from Wikimedia Commons

I tried transplanting the real strawberries I had into the North Side. It's like a 4 ft wide strip between the house and a cinder block wall and barely gets any sunlight. Those strawberry plants ended up dying last year. But I have the wild type doing just fine right now in that area.

Jananas Bananas
03-29-2011, 09:30 PM
Dar, I had to check because they look so tasty! :2216: Wikipedia has this to say:

The mock strawberry or "Gurbir", Potentilla indica (formerly Duchesnea indica), also called Indian strawberry or false strawberry, has foliage and fruit similar to true strawberry, though it is not in the genus Fragaria. It can readily be distinguished by its yellow flowers, as opposed to the flowers of true strawberries which are white or slightly pink. It is native to eastern and southern Asia, but has been introduced to many other areas as an ornamental plant. It has been naturalized in many regions, including the southern United States, and is considered a noxious weed in some regions.

The leaves are trifoliate, roughly veined beneath, dark green, and often persisting through the winter, arising from short crowns. The plant spreads along creeping stolons, rooting and producing crowns at each node. The yellow flowers are produced in mid spring, then sporadically throughout the growing season. The fruits are white or red, and entirely coverered with red seeds. They are edible, though unpleasant to eat, as they have no discernable taste.

Sherry, did you notice that those variegated ones are alpine?

We went somewhere recently that had strawberries the size of my palm. I thought they looked so good! I got three of them. (oink, oink) But I cut into one and YukkO!!! They were so sour and awful! In fact they weren't even ripe - they were red on the outside and mostly white on the inside! I was very disappointed. I tried all three just in case one was good too! ~J

I knew as soon as I saw Greg's link, you would love them, JaNan. They are very beautiful indeed. I wonder what color the blossoms will be. The fruits should be utterly delicious, being it's an Alpine.

Yeah that is the other one I want to get. It looks fake it is so pretty!

I was talking to my sister this morning and she said she had picked up two strawberry plants from Home Depot. She said they were tagged as the same kind of strawberry but one had white blooms and the other had pink. I asked her if she would save me some seeds of the pink bloom and she asked me how she would do that and I told her with tweezers. She laughed and said yeah, I am really going to do that! Sooooo.......... I may have to just get a stawberry from her. Geez!

What's the name of the pink blossom, do you know?

Growing Strawberries Information And Pointers - In addition to the traditional strawberry patch, there are as many ways to grow strawberries as there are to eat them! Grow strawberries in a bed, hydroponically, as a ground cover, as an ornamental patio plant, or in a hanging basket.

The Major Strawberry Categories

The major part of growing strawberries is the knowledge of how different varieties of strawberries grow. Cultivated strawberry plants, or (cultivars) fit into one of three groups.

June bearing strawberries yield a large crop of strawberries near the end of spring. The main plants produce runners that root and grow into matted rows. The disadvantages of this type of strawberry plant is that they only produce fruit once during the year, and the first year you have to pick off all the blossoms from your strawberry plants so that they can become well established.

Strawberries know as ever bearing are not ever bearing, but will yield a harvest two times during the growing season, one in spring and another in autumn. The first year, pick off all the blooms from ever-bearing strawberries through to the end of June. Your strawberries will bloom again and produce fruit in fall.

Strawberries know as day neutral often turn out a harvest of smaller strawberries that are very sweet during the majority of the season. Pick off the first set of blooms and let the fruit set and you will get strawberries all summer long.

The Alpine Strawberry

The wild strawberry is a close cousin of the Alpine Strawberry. The Alpine Strawberry is the only strawberry that is frequently propagated from seed; the Alpine strawberry makes an exceptional ground cover with fragrant blossoms and delicious white or red berries. The Alpine Strawberry seeds its self from its own seeds, and produces strawberries during the entire growing season.

Buying Strawberries

Autumn is the best time of the year to buy your strawberry plants. At the end of the season, you can find strawberry plants at cheaper prices, or order strawberry plants to be delivered in spring. Additionally, your nursery might offer you wholesale strawberry plants in bundles containing as many as twenty-five plants. Many nurseries have a limited amount of space and frequently accept orders for wholesale plants on a first-come basis. Often their stock is gone before spring.

The majority of strawberry plants winter-over if you keep them in an unheated garage, or cool basement. For additional protection, cover the roots with wood shavings, soil, or sand. Ordering or buying your strawberry plants during the fall guaranties that you will have them to plant in spring.

Selecting Your Site

You should plant your strawberries in the sunniest place you have. Though you can get a crop with as few as six hours of direct sunlight each day, you will get the biggest harvest and superior quality strawberries from plants that get full sun all day long.

Strawberry plants have shallow roots that are no match when it comes to competing with shrubs, trees, weeds, or other types of plants. Turn over your garden bed in the fall to get rid of most of the weeds that produce troubles during the growing season. Select a spot that is away from larger trees, which can spread its roots into your strawberry bed. As well, be sure to place your strawberry bed away from any area where you have been growing tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, or eggplant. These plants can carry verticillium wilt, which is destructive to strawberries.

Strawberries will not flourish in water soaked soil, but they do require a moist location. Add a good quality supply of nutrient rich organic material to your soil to improve drainage, aeration, and to add to the moisture-holding ability of your soil. In the spring, when the frost is no longer in the ground and you are able to work the soil till the bed again. Now you can plant your strawberries.

Pour the wet ingredients over the dry ingredients and stir just until moistened. Pancake batter is supposed to be lumpy.

In a separate little bowl, combine the cut up pieces of strawberry and banana

4
Put some butter in the skillet/griddle/electric griddle that should be over medium heat.

5
Take as much or as little batter as you want and spoon it onto the heated surface.

Sprinkle the top of the pancake with the strawberry-banana mixture

6
Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until the amount of bubbles forming on the top of the pancake increases. This means it's time to flip. Once done, serve with butter, syrup, whipped cream, or peanut butter

No, I got them last week or the week before. They were spindly and small, but all of a sudden (and I check them every day) I have a blossom and another right under it. I actually wanted to get a strawberry pot full of strawberries - but I had bought some other things and thought it was too high. So, I settled on grabbing a couple of the babies.

I need to go to Wal-Mart and see if I can find any pink blossomed ones! :) ~J

I read this thread and learned tons about strawberries. =)
We had strawberries last summer, they were really sweet too! I dont know what type but they had white flowers and made strawberries at the start of summer but that was all. Only one of the plants was growing there now, it was by a big rock. I dug it up and put it in a pot. I used some dirt and potting soil and sand. I gave it some plant food too.
btw, thanks for the recipes! I really like the pancake idea and the strawberry twinkies idea! I have tweezers so I'm going to try picking seeds off and planting them. =D

Anyway here's my strawberry plant.

Here's my new little Alpine seedling today. I meant to put it in my aero-garden a lot sooner, but the Aloe Polyphylla seeds started popping. Keep in mind that most commercial growers only grow strawberries in the same field for three years, and then they plow it up, and plant in a different location, and allow the original field to lie fallow for a few years. This is because strawberry plants get a virus, which is not really apparent in the plants, but really cuts production. This is one of the major benefits of tissue culture propagation. A grower can be assured of starting out with virus-free stock.

I guess plants just don't like me. I just planted it and a few days later it looked like this. Too much sun? Rain? Wind? I don't know. We have had all three extremes over the last few days.

Jananas Bananas
06-05-2011, 12:52 PM
Tom, I put mine in a pot first to see what it liked and didn't like. I have found it is very, very thirsty and will wilt easily and quickly. I think I will re-pot it into the moisture control potting soil to see if I can water it less. Also, variegated plants do not like full sun. Their white will burn, curl and tear very easily so they have to be babied a bit. Not sure where you planted yours, but it doesn't look like there is any shade in the picture. All of your extreme conditions will certainly effect it. You might try digging it back up and potting it for a while to see if it will perk back up. Everything might die off and new growth may come up from the roots. Hoping it makes it!

~JaNan

Okay, I moved it to near where the poison ivy grew/grows. I figure since poison ivy likes partial shade it must be a good spot.

I'll let the strawberry plant and poison ivy fight it out for resources.

Oh, and I think you are right about the sun because the white part of the leaves were burned while the other parts weren't so bad.

But it has 4 new leafs now! =D
Ive been growing it inside under a grow light and we grew them last year in a really sunny garden and got tons of strawberries but this is the only plant i have this year.

Do the stems always stand up like that? I think I mentioned before I like putting them in hanging baskets so the babies can hang down over the edges in a flow. I just wonder if they would do well in one? You mentioned you grew them well in the garden, so they were on and in the ground, right?

The Hollyberry Lady
07-08-2011, 11:12 PM
Any strawberry plant can be grown in a hanging basket because the berries always drape down the side, even if the leaves are upright. The Alpine leaves will drape a bit though in time.

Strawberry plants with runners though, unlike my Alpine, are especially attractive in a hanging basket because the runners drape down.

I think I sent you seeds for "temptation" Janan...now that one is absolutely ideal for a basket. Alpines look good in pots though too but also in the garden. They're tiny plants and can fit anywhere.

Yes, I grew them before in the garden on the ground, but I used netting to protect from birds once the berries came.

: )

Yes, you sent me that and Patio I think was the name or a patio type. I have tried to start two seeds of each - and out of the four one tail came out. I did as you suggested putting them in a cool place to get them started, but once I transfer them to the AG the algae over takes and kills them. I need to just try starting them again in a pot.

That was my next question - BIRDS! :ha:

The Hollyberry Lady
07-09-2011, 10:41 AM
Yeah, they keep changing the names...they used to be called "Temptation" but now they're called "Patio Temptation"...or something like that.

"Little Blue" too, used to be called "Little Blue Pot"...which I liked better. ;)

Anyway, those 'Patio Temptation" ones are excellent for hanging baskets. If you're having trouble with algae killing them off, wait until they're a bit bigger before transferring them to the A-G...and also find ways to curb the algae growth.

Apparently that's why they recommend we keep the paper covers on, because it reduces the amount of algae, when no light can get through.

Alpine types and an everbearing variety called "Temptation" will grow nicely indoors, especially under HID lighting.

Regular fertilizing will do wonders for your yields and I like a 15-30-15 formula.

Sherry,
can you suggest a reliable place to get 'berry seed. It seems that I'm not doing any good with most seed I get. (haven't ordered 'berry seed yet)
The temps will start dropping soon and I can get back into the swing of things. Love growing outdoors so most of the veggies will be in containers and only come in when the weather gets bad. Strawberries grow very well in Florida so I might do good also. Thanks

How do you harvest seeds from the berrys? Do you just plant the entire berry in the ground? Will the seeds be true to mother? I have never harvest seeds or grown strawberrys from seeds. I just cut off the runners and keep making new plants till the plants start making real small berrys then I toss em.

The Hollyberry Lady
10-22-2011, 01:54 PM
The seeds are on the outside of the berries and I use tweezers to pull them off and onto a plate. Propagating strawberry plants by way of runners though is as good a method as any. :D

Yes, I believe the seeds will be true to the mother unless it's a hybrid.

Can someone help me identify what kind of strawberry I have?
The place I got it from just had a tag saying strawberry, but he did say that it was a somewhat hardy type. I live in Massachusetts and they had it outside in 48 degree weather. I'm just curious.

The Hollyberry Lady
11-01-2011, 10:17 PM
There's no way to know for sure until fruits appear...if even then. Hopefully they're everbearing.

You could call the place where you bought them, and inquire. They can usually find out from their source. ;)

I'm sure you'll do fine with them. They like to be fed with a 15-30-15 formula every couple weeks. Can't wait to see the blossoms.

For now keep the plant in good sunlight. The more sun you can provide, the faster it will grow, and the bigger the yield.

So excited for you! :goteam: Please keep us posted with shots...

Im going to have to pick up some formula. All i have is 10 10 10 right now.
Thanks.

The Hollyberry Lady
11-01-2011, 10:31 PM
That formula is ok for now, while the plant is in vegetative growth...so you don't have to rush out to get it tomorrow. The one you have should be just fine for a few weeks yet. ;)

I'd also keep the leaves showered once a week in the sink or tub, if it's to be an indoor plant, to keep spider mites away. They are very attracted to edible plants indoors. Rinse the leaves thoroughly with water, paying special attention to the undersides.

You can also propagate the runners and make other plants. You'll have lots of fun growing strawberries and they're easy to care for.

: )

tommyg

Thanks good idea. I actually have a slightly larger pot that I think I'm going to transplant them into. Aside from some light watering I am also spraying it down with a water spray bottle at medium intensity. The leafs seem to like that. If it does grow runners that would be great, and then I can plant those in other pots. Hope it continues to do well, today is a sunny day.

Yes, definitely similar to how your plant will look, but don't forget that mine is an Alpine variety and they are way smaller plants. Yours could also have runners, whereas Alpines don't.

On another pic would you be able to place a soda can or cup next to the plant so I can see how large it is? The Hollyberry Lady

The plant is 4-6 inches tall with an 8 inch spread. Not very big at all, and just perfect for my aero-garden. It gets fed weekly.

Your plant will likely look like most full-size strawberty plants and be 6-8 inches tall. The spread will depend on if it produces runners or not.

Don't be shy about calling the place you bought it from and asking them to ask their supplier about the details on the variety.

I think i'm seeing a small flower trying to form in the middle, or it could be a new leaf not sure. As I am getting a lot of sun today I moved my strawberry plant outside. Its doing really well. I'll post a pic a little later after a couple more hours of sun.

Yes the blossoms will form fairly quicky, even on small plants. Glad it's growing well for you. ;)

Ok. I asked the greenery that I had bought the strawberries from and they think its Summer Sweet. Everbearing. So we'll have to see when they grow.

That's just excellent that you may have found out what they are, Tommy! Makes things a bit easier, knowing what you're growing.

In regards to your pm...I currently have some seeds for "Temptation" everbearing strawberry that grows great in a hanging basket, and also some of the Alpine type that I've been posting shots of lately in my aero-garden. Both are excellent and flavorful. I can certainly share a few seeds of each of them with you, no problem.

I'm actually looking online right now and can't find a summer sweet strawberry. I'm sure it has a different name. They really didn't know what it was, but its everbearing, somewhat hardy, they said its a common type found in the northeast. But I was checking out strawberryplants.org great site! you should check it out.

I like everbearing types the best because you can harvest from them longer.

They're gonna be delicious, Tommy! :goteam:

I bet they put on a crop fast for you. You can also propagate many more plants from your one plant, so you're in for some fun. :D

That's just great that you know what you've got. Be sure to save seeds from your berries so you can share with other gardeners...namely, me! :ha:

I took this tonight and there's something about it that I love...

I just realized that I have been seeing good growth from my strawberry plant ever since I gave it some food and the sun has helped as well. How often do you feed strawberries when its in growth mode? Once a week or a couple times a week? I don't want to over feed it, but it has grown significantly since I fed it.

The Hollyberry Lady
11-14-2011, 11:17 AM
Yeah, don't overfeed a young plant because it could die. When in vegetative growth, I feed once a week at half strength. Some people prefer once every two weeks at full strength...that's up to you.

A fertilized plant will grow quicker and better than an unfertilized one, so I'm not surprised to hear of your success. Just don't get over zealous as a lot of new gardeners tend to do, and over-fertilize.

You'll have to show a shot of it soon. Can't wait until you get some blossoms. Then the real fun begins! :goteam:

I think I posted some pics on my blog yesterday. I'm going to have to look at more interesting angles. Last time I fed it was last week thursday I believe. I'll give it a tiny taste after work today. If its 60+ tomorrow again I might actually leave it outside all day to soak up the sun. This one is pretty hardy withstanding about 40 degrees plus as a constant. I beleive it can withstand as low as -10 or 0. Different websites say different things. I feel comfortable keeping it outside at 50 degrees or warmer. Plus having that hot sun on it will really help it.

The Hollyberry Lady
11-14-2011, 11:40 AM
Most strawberry plants here are hardy as well and they start growing in early spring outdoors when it's still very chilly outside. They also last well into the fall if they're everbearing varieties.

I'll check out your shots shortly...

I gave my strawberry plant some food today. I do see some new leafs developing.
I'll make sure to take some pics later this week or weekend to share on here. I'll probably show an early pic and a new one so you guys can compare.

It could be compared to the size of an almond or a Filbert.

Alpines are simply delicious and the flavor is very intense. I enjoy eating a couple each day. YUMMY!

Yes Kevin, check out my blog...it explains some things. Maybe you'd like to try growing strawberries from seed. If that's the case I can set you up with some. ;)

Sorry your plant died. :(

Spidermites are definitely a problem on indoor strawberry plants and so I shower my plants at least once a week to keep them away. You'll never see even one mite if you shower your plant consistently, making sure to rinse the undersides of the leaves where mites would be.

hi Sherry.
My strawberry plant is not looking good now.
I think I may have over watered it as the leafs are turning brown on the edges. So I think i may have.
Should I trim off the brown ones? The flowers are starting to open. I can post a pic tonight.

nice. honestly i'm too embarrassed to show a pic. basically all the leaf tips are a bronze brown and the leafs are a slightly darker green. I'm pretty positive I over watered it last weekend.
Should I just cut off the brown ends? The flowers are trying to open, but they look sad as well.

tommyg
11-28-2011, 06:32 PM
ok so i trimmed the brown tips and cut one leaf out that looked in bad shape. Then on the other side I found another small flower trying to grow. I will make sure going forward not to over feed or over water. I hope it starts to recuperate soon.

The Hollyberry Lady
11-28-2011, 07:07 PM
Don't worry about showing a shot. ;)

Once leaves turn brown they will never be green again, so it's good to remove them and clean the plant of any dead branches or leaves.

Yeah, overwatering can be a killer so allow the soil to dry for awhile. Hopefully you have good drainage holes in the pot so the water can continue to drain.

Good luck. Tommy. ;)

OK I am trying again with an AeroGarden strawberry! I haven't had any luck with sprouting in seed starter medium nor damp paper towel, so I put these directly in an AG sponge. I take the humidity dome off a couple times a day and I did pull it up out of the basket some, so we shall see!

Has anyone ever tried the giant strawberries before?

I saw this listing on eBay *NEW* GIANT STRAWBERRY *25 seeds*FRAGARIA ANANASSA L.*RARE*SWEETEST*HUGE #1105-A | eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-GIANT-STRAWBERRY-25-seeds-FRAGARIA-ANANASSA-L-RARE-SWEETEST-HUGE-1105-A-/160689407976?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2569d5c7e8)

I used to grow strawberries, but replaced the entire bed with blueberries as they are much easier to take care of and I always had a problem with strawberries getting eaten by slugs, pill bugs and other insects. They also grew kind of small, but blueberries worked better for me.

tommyg
12-16-2011, 01:30 PM
That's great insight. Unfortunately I think I near killed my strawberry plant as it is still in rough shape. Do blueberries withstand colder climates? I am thinking of replacing my strawberry plant.

stevelau1911

Blueberry plants are reputed to be cold hardy to zone 3 and I've had them in pots over the winter with no protection at all, and it doesn't seem to bother them. It got down to -9F which was the coldest I've ever seen here on that winter so I don't think zone 6 poses any threat to blueberry plants.

I've heard that they can't thrive in alkaline soil, but I've never had a problem with PH as I mix in lots of peat moss & wood chips before planting, sometimes displacing the native soil.

The Hollyberry Lady

Sorry to hear about your strawberry plant, Tommy. Keep in mind though, this isn't exactly the right time of year to grow them and unless you have good light it's difficult to have success.

Some people find blueberries hard to grow, but you may have a different experience. I seem to recall you have a little blueberry shrub in a pot already, don't you Tommy?

Did you ever get my seeds? I included the Alpine type for you. I didn't get your seeds and it's been a month. It's Christmas though so who knows if it got lost in the shuffle and it's just late. I can surely send some more if not. There are passiflora seeds in the envelope too. ;)

Oh I can't wait to see your shots, Jarred! :goteam:

What kind are you growing? You know they're spreaders, right? Each year your patch will be bigger and bigger...unless you are growing runner-less types, like my Alpine variety in my pictures. Otherwise, strawberry plants spread via underground runners.

When it comes time for the berries to ripen, if you have any problems with birds, you can use a mesh netting to put over top of your patch and this will keep them away. I used rocks to weigh the netting down.

Anyway, good luck with yours, Jarred.

I think my Alpine in my aero-garden is going to live forever! :ha: It's bursting with growth and it hasn't stopped. It's such a compact little garden strawberry plant. I've got some seeds for you too. I mailed some to Tommy but he never got them. :( I might try again.

So hopefully this new one will do well for you, Janan. I know you want to grow a strawberry plant in the A-G. I'm ordering a few new kinds to try from the same place I got the Alpine ones from. No worries, I'll share. :goteam:
