View Full Version : Which is more important?
I over wintered bare-rooted basjoos and ensetes in the basement. One of the
basjoos pstem suffered a little rot so I cut it back to green, and it hardened up nicely. Problem, which is more important if you only have one (1) choice of sun
or heat? Too cold in the garage and definitely still too cold outside. My ensetes kept their Pstems and a coupla leaves so they are in the garage getting sun on a window. The basjoos had to be cut down to the corm, sooo, to jump start them I can easily give them light in a cold garage or put them in with the water heater and furnace for nice warmth where it is totally dark.:bed:

You don't want heat without light. With heat only it will try to grow and without light it won't be able to photosynthesize and will wear itself out. Banana corms store pretty well kept around 40F in the dark. Bajoos seem not to store very well. I don't know if that is because when I tried to store them at around 60F they were kept too warm or if they just don't store well. Orinocco, Raja Puri and some other unnamed variety did just fine in the same conditions.

I just keep mine in the garage, never water them and hope for the best.
Everything did great this winter except the Siam rubies, they all rotted and died unfortunately. I think if you store them without any soil around the corm,or not in pots they do better because they can stay dry and they get efficient air circulation.
Keep them cool,dark and dry

I did manage to overwinter a Siam Ruby kept in a terrarium like setting (humid, hot with bright lights) but when I put it out in spring it "vanished". Maybe I put it out too soon. Even under those conditions it didn't look too good.

I learned the hard way this year light before heat. 60s with minimal light really did a number on mine...
