My first attempt at grafting. I'm excited to see the results! Any pointers?:08:

This is a persimmon tree during the process.

Dean,

I just got a large Fuyu persimmon tree. Can't wait for fruit this year. Found out about a Korean punch made from the dried fruit -- Soo Jeung Ga. Research says this stuff will beat acid reflux problems without the Nexium and other like drugs. Will see. Still, a delicious fruit for the backdoor gardener and fairly cold resistant. The last 15 months have all of us in S Fla rethinking what to grow. All my ornamentals are dedd-dedd and the Xmas palms look like hell. The banana mats all survived covered up with frost cloth.

Speaking about grafting --- just joined a rare fruit club here in So Fla and propagation classes are scheduled at a members place in March. Grafting materials supplied - scion wood and various root stocks for various specie match provided. He also has a 5 acre tree nursery on the property. Got a cold hardy peach from him already - Tropic Beauty that was developed by Univ of Fla for S Fla climate. It goes in the ground next week. Has 20 fuit set already - can't wait!

Dan,

Yes, permission trees are very cold hardy. They had some really neat ones at a nursery I visited recently. Various shapes and firmness/textures. That must have a dozen varieties or so. They were $60 a pop though.:ha: I hear they are used in herbal medicine too.

I have a Chocolate (soft type) and firm type. I've since lost the tags and need to get them re-identified. I had a pear tree where I planted one, but I cut it down because it was getting fire-blight terribly.

I know what you mean about "re-thinking what to grow". I'm tired of the banana set backs, but hate to throw them away completely.:ha: I may keep a few dwarfs for the greenhouse and that's about it.

Good luck with the rare fruit club. That sounds way cool. This was strictly a self taught grafting lesson for me. The scion wood buds are already wilting. I'm thinking I should have used wax.
