We have a Hot Pepper thread, but this one is for SWEET pepper freaks! :D
Last night I sowed some seeds for a unique & beautiful sweet pepper variety called "Purple Beauty". It's a compact plant and the fruits are 4 lobed...large & blocky.
Although these picture are not my own, here's how they'll look...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/PurpleBeauty.jpg
You can let the fruits ripen to a deep burgundy for more flavor and nutrition...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/PurpleBeautyPeppers.jpg
Another sweet type I love that I sowed today is called "Tennessee Cheese". The fruits are as sweet as candy. I'll show it later. :)
Here's one of my "Gypsy" sweet pepper fruits. It's a great type for indoors and it's cool-resistent, producing fruits when most varieties have stopped...

Feel free to post your sweet peppers or discuss them here also...

I sowed some Jimmy Nardello sweet pepper seeds the other night also. They're a cool pepper because they look like long red cayenne, but are in fact sweet!
Not my pic but here's how they'll look. I've grown them before, and they're a sweet Italian frying pepper...

growing aji dulce this year. I got the seeds from a friend in Puerto rico. Also doing cubanelle, sweet red cherry pepper, zavory (looks like habanero but no heat), several bells in every color. LOVE peppers....

Someone sent me seeds for those last season too but not from Puerto Rico :ha: ...I thought they were ripping hot. I think I'll sow them now that you've revealed they are sweet.
Still waiting for the "purple beauty" seeds to pop...

Unfortunately they aren't named, but aren't they beautiful?

JaNan, that white one!!!
If you end up with a white variety, you gotta save seeds! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/2.gif
Those are very pretty. I have mixes too but never seem to sow them. I've never seen ones like that though. Did you just get those seeds this season? They look like they'll be very ornamentally beautiful.
Thanks for sharing. ;)

I know Sherry I think that white one is very pretty and the nearly black one right next to it, AND the purple speckled one in the upper right corner! I will save seeds if I get anything really good, I promise! :) They are all supposed to be sweet bell peppers. ~J

Yeah, those are all so pretty JaNan. Can't wait to see what you end up with. How exciting! :goteam:
I know there's a white habanero, but I've never seen a white bell!
You'll have to sow every seed, to make sure you end up with the colors you want. Hopefully there weren't 50 seeds in the packet! :ha:
Good luck with them JaNan...peppers are so fun and easy to grow. :D

My wife & I only like sweet peppers
I have planted 4 different seed packs this year
Peppers for me seem to take 4 weeks to germinate
I started them around Feb 12th...just starting to sprout
I do start my seeds out in the sunroom, temp does dip to mid-50's at nite with the house heat set to 62
I'll have to start them earlier next year
Last year I started them in mid March...we only had one pepper last year
With more storm windows on the greenhouse this year I am hoping to start seeds in Jan next year & start moving things to the greenhouse in Feb

You could also try purchasing a heat mat, Dave. :08: They work wonderfully in helping pepper seeds and many others come up in no time flat.
I have several. :D

It's an 800mg packet. Looks like over a hundred or so. :ha: The seeds are different colors too. Most are the usual creamy gold color, but there are different shades of that and a couple that have a greenish tint and a couple really dark ones. I'll probably try starting the differently colored ones first. ~J

: )
Yeah I'm trying to avoid any extra expenses right now
I thought it might be heat related
Right now there isn't any specific heaters for the sunroom, it's just wide open to the kitchen which has a big radiator
Eventually I want to use a solar panel to heat the greenhouse & the sunroom....possibly the whole house
The Hollyberry Lady
03-10-2011, 10:25 PM
Dave, the top of the fridge can be warm like a heatmat and it's free! ;)
Try to put your pots in a warm spot so you won't have to wait quite so long for things to come up. 4 weeks is a long time to wait. :(
Covering your pots over with pastic may help speed germination also.

Kitchen is the wife's domain, off limits
Top of the fridge is for my cookies
I'm lucky I get to take over part of the sunroom
I thought of near a radiator...but do not have one in a good location that I can use
This year I started the pepper seeds 4 weeks earlier then last year
Last year I had 200 tomato seedlings, I expect the same number this year
Out of that I'd say I get 100 good plants
The others produce some fruit, but not a huge amount
I have 4 different pepper seed packets
I expect to have a lot of pepper plants this year
I'm converting another ~15'x24' area to a garden
Not sure of the exact measurements yet
The Hollyberry Lady
03-11-2011, 02:05 AM
Well it's good that you start them extra early Dave, to make up for all the time you have to wait. I guess they'll come up sometime or another anyway, so if they're planted early, it won't really matter. ;)
I'm hoping for some more spouts soon. I even sowed a few more Gypsy pepper seeds because they grow so wonderfully indoors.
I also recently sowed some of Pepper Joe's Alma Paprika seeds...which are a sweet & spicy pepper.
Another type I have is called 'Fruit Basket', and it's a wonderful hanging basket pepper plant that produces medium size fruits that ripen to orange. The fruits are sweet with a slight peppery flavor to them (peppery as in salt and pepper). They're kind of unique and the plant itself trails, making it ideal for a hanging basket.

Yup, we set our clocks 1 hour ahead tonight too...at midnight. ;)
Yes, this is the "Purple Beauty" and they are purple fruits on compact plants with green leaves. The plants themselves only reach just under 2 feet tall. Not too good for my aero-garden but excellent for a container in my window!

This year I'm going to be growing Jimmy Nardello, Purple Beauty, Odessa Market and Sweet Chocolate Peppers. The Jimmy Nardello is the only kind I have gown before and they are very good.
The Hollyberry Lady
03-15-2011, 02:04 PM
Yes, Jimmy Nardello is an excellent Italian frying sweet pepper. I love them, and the plants are extremely ornamental too. People mistake them for hot peppers and leave them alone! :ha:
Chocolate peppers, which I have seeds for also, are beautiful to look at and can be tasty, but they are much more bland than the red and green types.
Sounds like you've got a nice mix going on there, Dave. ;) The "Purple Beauty" will not be a disappointment! You'll love them!

It was over 70 outside yesterday, beautiful day
I bought a pack of the mixed pepper seeds too

Greenhouse went up close to 80, only dipped to 50 over nite

Sherry I think these are three different sweet bell peppers from that mix of seeds I bought. The reason I think they are different is because of the color of the stems. What do you think?

For sure I'll be saving the seeds for these chocolate mini bells and as they were grown indoors, the seeds will be 100% true!

:woohoonaner: Sherry that is wonderful!!!! That's the color I was hoping you would get too! Now is that the "ripe" color, or will it turn red or another do you know?

I think they may eventually turn red Janan, as most peppers do. Maybe I'll experiment and leave one on the vine and see what happens. I can't believe I got this lucky to get the chocolate
ones! :goteam:
I know you want seeds! :ha: I can't wait to collect them!

My "Purple Beauty" plant on my mom's balcony...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_1890.jpg
You can see more little fruits developing at the top of the plant. The fruits start out green but begin to turn purple almost immediately. These are said to be the best purple bells around...they turn red too, but you can eat them when they're purple.

Some really nice stuff you guys got there. I need to find out what you feed your plants and how often. Not a single one of my plants have given me a really nice crop that you guys seem to get off each and every plant. I'm lucky to get 2 or 3 peppers off each one. Maybe my pots are too small. Or it could be that I don't feed them enough. I use a weak mix of water soluble fertilizer every other week or so.
I just got through a nasty infestation of white flies. I had actually given up on my plants thinking they were done, but found that some of the lady beatles that eat white flies moved in. Anyway, long story short some of my plants are recovering slowly, and some seem to not be doing well. I'll keep at it and see what happens.

Fertilizer is absolutely everything! It's the difference between a shabby harvest and an abundant one. If you keep your pepper plants showered regularily and feed them, you'll have way more fruits than just a few and you won't have to deal with anymore pests.
A pepper plant infested with bugs is weak and inferior. It's using all it's energy to stay alive and not be taken down by the infestation, so it cannot focus on fruit production. Your plants have been stressed from the pests and then coupled with irregular feedings...it's a recipe for disaster!
Glad to hear some are on the mend though, Notrecruiting. :D
Love the Banana peppers Janan!!! Were those my seeds? They look so appealing and delicious.

We grow organically and was wondering if you might have an idea of how much fertilizer to use on our pepper plants as they are not putting out large fruit and are quite slow. Which nutrients do you suggest?
Thanks

Well that's the thing Noah...you don't have to get all weird and technical about how much to apply and what kinds to use because many different ones will work well, along with many different doses too. Picking a fertilizer is a personal choice.
I'm an organic gardener also, so I use Dutch Nutrient Formula...a water soluble organic solution. I apply the recommended dose once per week, using the fruiting formula. It works terrific.

:woohoonaner: Thank you!!
That's what I needed to know....I think I've been starving my poor plants. I've been diluting my fert solution too weak and then only feeding every other week. I'm gonna start using full strength once a week now.

Ok, we'll swap addresses early next week. Glad you like the chocolate peppers. They are pretty cool I must admit.
The plant is small and compact and it would be terrific in a pot. Mine is in my aero-garden. You won't believe how sweet they are!

I have to tell you, DH saw that picture and said "why did somebody put water on a piece of chocolate?" :ha::ha: Now if they would only invent THAT!!!
I started another sweet banana pepper because my last one gave me so many really good peppers, can't wait until this one does! I thought I would have to start another seed, because I thought this one looked weak, but it looks fine now.
