Thanks for the tips! I have faith in this one (since it's basil) i know how readily they will jump back to life. I frequently forget about mine in the summer and nearly kill the thing and a splash of water brings it back. But i'll take some care and try to keep it moist and out of direct sunlight for the first few weeks. I'll be excited to start some new seeds in the AG after pulling this guy out. On a side note, its' the first time i've ever grown lemon basil and it smells AMAZING!! just like lemon. :-)

I really love basil and have many seeds for different varieties, including cinnamon basil! Ever tried Thai basil? It tastes like black licorice!
Ok here's that little geranium I put in the A-G awhile back. It's gonna bloom soon...

Were those seeds from me? I think there's been some kind of mix-up. If those seeds were from me, that's a "Table" tomato plant. I thought it was too big to be a micro-tom! :ha:

I know but I'll be sure you'll get some of the authentic Micro-Tom seeds too. Sorry about that.
Yes, the table plant is a dwarf cherry tomato but the cherries are larger than most. The plant doesn't get too tall so no worries. The yields are usually huge so get ready to eat a lot of tomatoes! You've grown your plant beautifully, Jordan! :goteam:

Hey guys, what's up?
Those seeds came out of my Micro Toms that I have pictured here in the AG's. I still have the table tomato that you sent me in the package Sherry, and the one that I have grown - I did not harvest any seeds from those. It sure does look more like the Table than the Micro though. I did have one Micro that grew kind of wild like that but only one though. I have grown three so far.
Here is the newest MicroTom

Wow, everything looks terrific, Janan! I love the red lettuce...I think I gave you the seeds?
Well there you have it Jordan...I am not to blame! :ha: You've just got an oddball there. One that's gonna produce a lot of fruits I bet. :D
So Janan, I had a mystery seedling in my A-G and it's turned out to be an Amythest beautyberry shrub!!! :goteam:

Yes Sherry, you sent me the seeds for the red lettuce and I LOVE it. You can see I am tearing the leaves off from the bottom up and they have more flavor than any lettuce I have eaten so far. You can tear one leaf off for a sandwich and actually taste the lettuce. I have more babies coming up in the leafy greens AG. It is my favorite and so pretty.
I was wondering if you had figured out what the little mystery seedling was. I need to start another one of those. I tried twice and they never popped for me. I FINALLY got two of my Marble seeds to pop.
http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/n580/JaNan16/Aerogarden/20120107023.jpg
They look kind of spindly though so I don't know if they are going to make it or not. But they actually sprouted underneath the cantaloupe leaf. It's like the light has been to strong for them or something.
The Hollyberry Lady
01-07-2012, 11:07 PM
I told you those were really fresh marble seeds..or were those yours? I have some that are 100% viable.
The Amythest Beautyberry seeds are also really viable but they take 10-14 days to come up. They're really tiny seedlings at first too...like petunias.
Great you have some marble seedlings again! Keep in mind that mine wouldn't produce fruits in the A-G so I took it out. It lives on in a pot now. :D

No these were mine. I haven't gotten yours yet. Yes, I am keeping that in mind. I couldn't get them to sprout in seed starter either though. Aren't those little marbles that you have under your special grow bulb? How are they doing?
I want to start some winterberry again too. They are smidgeon sprouts too. How are your winterberry doing? Haven't seen you post pictures of them in a while. And your geranium transplant that you moved into the AG. I have been wondering about that since they aren't a plant that I do very well with and was wondering if it would do well in the AG for me.
The Hollyberry Lady
01-07-2012, 11:28 PM
You must have missed it. Here was my geranium as of a couple nights ago...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_3718.jpg
The marbles under my special light are doing ok but I didn't realize I had a few pests on them. I knew they were growing rather slowly and when I looked underneath the leaves I saw many spider mites. I've got full control now though and they're growing again. I'll show them soon.
Winterberry shrublets are just not indoor plants and they eventually die inside. They're an evergreen and they like the outdoors. I'm gonna re-order some more in Spring and will send you a couple too Janan. I kept the ones I had going for awhile but they always go downhill after a short time inside and they die off. :(
Ok well I have a packet of fresh marble seeds for you as well. Christmas is over so I'm gonna mail a few things out next week. :0519:

Which color is that geranium Sherry? I guess I did miss it! How about your multi petunias, any blooms yet? Mine got spider mites and wiped it out. I will be started a new AG probably tomorrow and will try to start another one then. I am really anxious to see them in real life. I have been fighting them this winter more than I ever have had. I guess because our humidity is usually high and it hasn't been this year. Even showering and misting hasn't really helped this year, I got some Neem oil though and that does the trick. The little bastages! :2723:

I'm hoping it will be that pink striped one. That was SOOOOO pretty! If they sneak in and are really bad I just chunk the plant, but I have had some that I just babied along this time and I didn't want to lose. Makes me feel a little better if you get them occasionally too. Not that I'm glad you get them. That didn't sound right, but I know how good you take care of your plants and still get them. :(

No Luke, I took them out - they had gotten too tall for it. In taking them out I damaged one pretty badly and lost it, the other two were doing OK, but not nearly as well as when they were in the AG. They have now lost all their leaves and I don't know if they will regrow them or not. So far there is still green under the brown skin of the bark so I am guessing that they are still living. But like you said, they are so easy to grow and I have so many seeds still, I am not going to worry too much about them until Spring. :) I think most people that don't live in tropical type climates just treat them as annuals. I may start a few then set them outside to see how they do here.

Aw i hear you. same happened to mine. I was growing them in a mini-greenhouse but as soon as i potted them up and moved them to a new(cooler) location with less light they dropped all of their leaves. I figured it would just be easier to start some new seed in the spring.
Goji are doing well, i need to actually pot them up again, as they still tend to dry out before i get to them and so i've had to prune off some dead branches but i suppose that may encourage more. they are in 32oz yogurt containers. the problem is as i pot things up i have less and less space!! My goal is to keep them happy until spring and then pot them up in a large container and let them grow outside all season, and actually try to keep them out for the winter on the porch.

Wow Janan....your stuff is thriving!
I just replaced all my A-G bulbs so things are really perked up and lots of new growth is developing.
I hope that Patio Temptation strawberry plant does well in the A-G. It's got few runners so it might. We'll see. Glad you were able to germinate some of the seeds.
I think my Filius Blue hot pepper is gonna set fruits soon. It has buds now...finally.

Just wondering, since the aero garden already has a reflector on the top, couldn't you simply add in a nice strong 100 watt metal halide or something along that line to try and get superior results instead of just sticking with flourescents?
I find that seedlings do fine with just weak flourescents which are around a 5500K full spectrum, but I'm finding people here trying to grow more advanced plants like cantaloupes and strawberries which could probably benefit from a more powerful light.
I have an AG, but since peppers grow kind of quick, I can probably wait until March to get my bhut jolokias going as they grow pretty fast in the AG.
The Hollyberry Lady
01-14-2012, 04:26 AM
I've got a metal halide Steve but I think some of us just like to grow them to start out in the A-G but then transfer them later. It's fun because some seeds seem to germinate very well in the systems.
I've grown strawberry plants under my halide in the past and they've been a success. They do well in the A-G though too, just smaller plants.
Sure you could add more light to the A-G's if you wanted to. I like the compact look of them though and they make excellent conversation pieces. :ha:

I finally have some photos to share of my AG. So in a seed trade on gardenweb i recieved some lemon basil seeds. I've grown lots of basil but never lemon basil so i grew some in my AG and WOW what a terrific variety. Makes the kitchen smell like fresh slices of lemon! Anyways, we had some curly lettuce growing that we clear cut harvested, and then let the basil continue to grow.
In this photo, you can see the young lemon basil on the left, with the big mass of lettuce on the right.
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=47704&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=47704&ppuser=10645)
Eventually, as you will see, the lemon basil got as big as that lettuce so we decided to pull it since nothing else was growing in the AG and i wanted to start with some new seed.
Here's the lemon basil just pulled out of the AG, look at those roots :-)
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=47702&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=47702&ppuser=10645)
Even though it doesn't look like it, we pruned about 1/3rd or so of the plant after potting it up in some soil.
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=47703&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=47703&ppuser=10645)
It's now sitting under a big(but thin) plastic tent to help keep it moist. so far so good.
By the way, the 1/3 pruning got sent into the dehydrator for about 1 hour and wallah, home grown, dried lemon basil..can't buy that in the store!
So now we have some new seed in the AG. I have 3 pods with stevia seeds(USDA Organic), 2 pods with bergamot(USDA Organic), and 1 pod with mizuna mustard greens

Also, i love everyone's photos. there's too many for me to comment on each since i last commented in this thread but rest assured i've watched the progress of everyone's AG and i love the update photos!

Hello all,
I just started up my aerogarden again 2 days ago with my bhut jolokias. Surprisingly, many of the seeds have already germinated so I guess it takes less than 48 hours to have results in the AG. This is crazy fast because I'm seeing nothing come out of the ones I am trying to germinate in soil.
I have about 3-4 seeds in each cell so perhaps it will be survival of the fittest or they might end up co-existing which is all OK with me as long as they end up producing.

Received some papaya seed from the Univ. of Hawaii and started germinating them in the AG. Results were slow so I tried putting an aquarium heater in the resavoir and brought the temp up to 82 to 86 F and the papaya germinated in 4 days and all of the seed followed along. We think that the added heat helps gettiing them going. They are removed and potted so there is room for more seeds. Endless cycle. Hoping to get some fruit this late summer. Some pics soon. Thanks

p.s. ran out of plugs so I tried using them made out of sponges. It works very nice so we may use this method for the seedlings since they get removed from the holder thingie before the roots are too massive. Some blue, some green, some yellow makes it sort of art work. (nah)

I'm having trouble finding it but was there someone here who said they had original aerogarden plastic baskets forsale? I currently have the 2 piece breakaway ones that came with a cuttings kit and they are just aweful! they don't sit down very deep into the top, so the corner ones are all crooked, the bottoms are much too long and hit the bottom of the basin. I threw out the original ones that came with the unit back when i got it but i remember them fitting so much better.
Any help is appreciated

Gosh Luke, I actually like the pull-apart baskets best. I guess to each their own. I only get the other kinds when I buy a new system, as they come with the unit. You could try checking with Aero-Garden themselves and see if you can order the kind you prefer. Good luck. ;)
