That is so pretty, JaNan! I love it. I bet you're super excited. I believe you may have to hand-pollinate the blossoms, but I can't recall. I know I had to for squash, mini pumpkins, and zucchini indoors...so it must be the same for eggplant.
I knew you'd grow that one because of the name. It's an extememely ornamental plant. Just wait until you see the fruits! :goteam:

I only had one blossom Sherry, but I got the paint brush out. I hope it can fertilize within the same blossom. It was only open for one day too. :(
OK here are a few AG pictures from this morning.

JaNan got those micro-tom seeds from me. ;)
Things are looking so good, JaNan!!! :goteam:
I didn't know you had a bud on your zinnia yet! I figured ours would bloom at the same time, so it's cool you have a bud too. Can't wait to see the color.
The Goji looks great. Soon time to prune. ;)
Thanks for the great shots. When are you gonna eat that first tomato?

Yes, Tom I can. Yes, I sure did! I put ONE seed in and poof! It popped! I have really enjoyed this little plant. Sherry says this is the smallest tomato plant in the world. Isn't that awesome?

Wow! Your little Thumbelina is really getting tall! It looks like she is towering over all the others. You know in that close up shot of the bud I can see a face. A very exotic face. :)
How much do I need to cut on my Goji? It is 6 inches now and I have to admit looks a little string beanish. I do want it to bush out.

Ok, well I've gone and done it again! :ha:
Just got home from the mall a little while ago and guess what I purchased?
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_1423.jpg
Yup, a second aero-garden! I decided not to wait until after I move...as they can be easily transported anyway.
Nothing in the pods just yet but I've filled it with water and decorated it with my crystals...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_1427.jpg
I like to decorate the bases with little trinkets and things. ;)
So I'm in the middle of deciding what to plant in this 2nd garden. Think I just miss outdoor gardening and now I feel like I'm compensating for it! :ha: Oh well, whatever works to get us through tough times, I guess. :)
I'll let you know shortly what I decide to sow...
Any suggestions? Although I likely won't take them! :ha:

Well I can make some suggestions for sure! :ha: I know you want to leave them in there to watch them grow right? Do you have any difficult or rare seeds? That's what I would start. :)

Regarding your previous posts...
Yes, my thumbelina is taller than anything else and I've had to raise the light up because of it. It's too gorgeous though so I can't cut it, although after the first bloom, I am going to cut it and prune it to the size I want it to be. I just cannot wait to see the color of the blooms...
Oh please, don't be orange! :ha:
So about the Goji...
If it's 6 inches tall, snip off two inches...about two nodes. When the branches form, you'll snip those when they reach 6 inches too. I'll get it into a bushy little shrub for you, instead of a tall spindly thing with no branches. :ha:
I like the crystal decorations too. And you likely remember the ones I have on my other unit....heart and buttefly? I think it looks cute and cheerful.
Ok, I've gotta make some decisions about what to sow in this new unit, so give me a little time...

Ok here's what I'm gonna grow in my new system...
~ Goji Berry
~ Aurora Hot Pepper
~ Colorado Blue Spruce
~ Starlight Pink Asters
~ Hahms Gelbe yellow dwarf tomato from Germany
~ Buff Beauty African Daisy
Of course I could change my mind. :ha:
Not sure how long I'll keep the Goji berry going in the sytem but the light will really get it off to a good start. The Asters will be feathery and unique looking and the yellow tomatoes from Germany should be cool too.
Couldn't resist growing a Spruce tree after seeing that article you showed with that gorgeous picture of them. Omg I've never forgot it and want to grow a beauty like the pics showed.
I love flowers so I picked some beautiful ones. Those buff beauty daisies have a sunflower look to them and they bloom profusely with lots of light. They're special and I paid a fortune for the seeds.
Well, what do you think? I'm pretty excited and happy about it.

It's too adorable, JaNan. That's just how it should look...I've grown them in pots before. So cool that we are both growing one and that they are so popular with aero-gardeners right now. I can't wait for mine to pop but I cheated little bit so we'll see...
I skipped the freezer treatment because the seeds were in my fridge for so long that I think this will be enough to break dormancy. It'll be an experiment.
I sowed two seeds of each variety tonight, to make sure I get at least one sprout of each. I don't like more than one plant per pod because they don't reach their full potential when they're crowded.
Did you see a pic of those strarlight pink asters I'm growing in my new a-g? Here's how they'll look...

JaNan and Sherry-
I see there are several different AeroGardens. Which ones do you have?
Jananas Bananas
07-01-2011, 12:02 PM
John - I have 6 of the Aerogarden Elite/Pro 100, 2 Classic 7 pod White, 1 LadyBug, 1 White Extra with Trellis :ha:
Sherry has 2 of the SpaceSaver 6
I could not find a store that carried them in Austin (believe it or not) so I bought my first one off eBay - it was brand new still in the box. Since then I have been watching my local Craigslist and have bought the other 9 there. The LadyBug was new also, but I still bought it off Craigslist. The only thing that can really go wrong with them is the pump, if they have had just regular decent care. I have had to replace two pumps, and you have to replace the lights every so often. The pumps are $9.95 at the Aerogrow website and they have a patented grow light bulb that you have to buy through them - they run $19.95 for a pair. Sometimes you can get free shipping at the website when they have specials.
Anyway, the jist of all this is if you want one (or more) try your local Craigslist first. I have bought NINE for less than I paid for the first new one!!!
Hope this helps.

Yeah John, it really just depends on what you want. I like the compactness of the SpaceSaver6 units...although I nearly bought a 7-pod pro yesterday. I wanted my systems to match though so I went with the same one.
I have some cool news about what I sowed in one empty pod today. I removed my marble pepper plant out of my original system and have potted it into soil. Will post about that next...

Your system looks great. I love that you're an aero-gardener now too. :D We're so glad we got it for you and hope you'll join us here with on-going pics.
How to Transplant an Already Mature Plant from Your A-G and Into Soil:
I removed my 'marble' hot pepper plant today from my original system and put it into a pot. I watered it REALLY well and let it drain. Then I placed a bag over the top with sticks to prevent the bag from touching the plant, until it grabs.
Although blurry under the bag, here's how it looks...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_1454.jpg
I've placed it near the aero-garden light and it will remain like this until it begins to grow again and I know the roots have made the adjustment from water to soil. Then I'll gradually remove the bag each day for more and more time, until it's off altogether.
There are air holes in the bag and it'll be taken off for 10 minutes each day so the plant can get used to being without it completely, eventually. It's tough but with a little nursing, plants can make the adjustment from water to soil, and be just fine.

OK I'll tell you a couple of ones I wish I knew when I started. The AeroGrow pods are pre-seeded. They usually put 3 to 4 seeds in each pod. But they (and Sherry I might add) only want one plant growing in each pod. That means you have to throw away or try to transplant very tender little things that aren't very stable. I am not real good about that, so I would recommend to you start only one seed per pod. They have a near 100% germination rate. That would leave you the rest to start again in another grow cycle or start in seed starter. If they haven't sprouted in the time span that they say open up the pod a little and see if you can tell anything by looking. The labels peel off easily if you are careful. If nothing has happened put another seed in there. That will make you seeds stretch to an entire year if it is a 4 seed pod. Another thing, Like I sent you two of the super hot purple peppers, take all the seeds out of that sponge and replace it with something else like ONE MicroTom seed. Save those other seeds for trading or another batch. Take the label off carefully and turn it upside down and just place it on top of the pod and place the dome back on until germination. That can work with any of them. You don't have to stick with what I sent. I start TREES in mine, and Sherry has a couple of trees started in hers too. OK that's two things. Sherry can add or subtract here with her experiences, but I just found I felt less wasteful if I didn't have to cull little seedlings. :ha:

The Hollyberry Lady

Sounds good to me, JaNan. ;) Did you know that a hot iron re-sticks the labels back on the cups perfectly?! Yup, you just press the cup with the label on top, to the hot iron, and it sets it again.
Oh and in this heat Cam, you gotta make sure you open the latch everyday and check to see that the basin is filled to the level it should be. I had seedlings croak because the water was down too far and their little roots weren't submerged. :( Be careful with that.
Yes Cam, experiment and sow different things in there...you don't really want to grow dill now do you?! :ha:
Ok so about the 'strawberry tree'...
It's a medium-size bushy tree that can reach 30ft but usually remains 8-15ft tall. Blooming period is usually autumn and winter, followed by fruits ripening from yellow to orange, and finally red over the next 9-12 months. Fruits and flowers usually appear on the tree together. Flowers are white-pink, and look much like blueberry flowers, having a bell shape. Hardy to 15-18F. Rough skinned red fruit with mealy, edible pulp. Fruits can be eaten fresh but don't have too much flavor, they are usually used to ferment and make an alcoholic beverage. The trees are commonly planted as ornamentals for their pretty flowers and fruit. Native to Southern Europe and the Mediterranean region.
The fruits and tree are extremely ornamental...

:waving: If they haven't swollen from the moisture you can catch them in time.
Also, if you see any mold starting to form (it will happen with the warmth and moisture - mine was white and webby looking), you can nip it in the bud with a Q-Tip dipped in Hydrogen Peroxide. I have a tiny spray bottle that I use with a half Peroxide half water mixture and I just give them a couple of squirts with that. :)

Yes it is quite the beautiful tree. I've been googling it and there's some people who say the fruits are delicious and others who say they're bland. I just want to grow a 'strawberry tree' for ornamental beauty but I'll try some of the fruits as well. ;)
Greg, that sounds fantastic! :goteam:
When are you buying it?! :ha: I really want you to get in on this with us. I know you'll love it and have such fun. It's not complicated and it doesn't have to be expensive either. Of course JaNan and I can help you with everything you need to know. You can remove the herb seeds and sow whatever you want to. You can easily grow peppers and flowers. :)
How incredibly cool is this video...
<iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/uT9EKtE-Bh4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Cameron...
You wanna grow stuff that will reach about the same height...give or take. This way, you won't have to raise your light up super high just to suit one tall one plant.
You can grow the dill, mint, and basil for that matter, in the garden or in pots, but your A-G pods should be reserved to grow only cool stuff. Only my opinion though and you certainly have the right to grow whatever you want in there. ;)
Also, don't be afraid to change things later...even when things are already up and growing. JaNan and I did, and things were fine. You can easily transplant plants, in and out of the A-G. I like to keep the strongest seedling in the unit to grow on and I remove the others to either pot up, give away, or simply discard. It's nice to have a choice from 2 or 3 and to be able to keep the healthiest seedling.
The extra light around your A-G shouldn't be wasted, as it can support many plants that will grow along side your unit. Plus it will decorate things and make it look more like a real garden. I have some Gerbera flowers around my new system but I've placed cuttings and succulents around the lights too and they thrived. I think you guys saw my pretty red polka dot plant growing along side too. It looks really nice seeing plants around the A-G...and why not make full use of the lights you're paying to run. Here are my red Gerbera Daisies catching the extra light on the side...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_1506.jpg
Another tip is to keep your A-G plants showered weekly, under the bathtub tap. Mites and other pests can still infest A-G plants, as well as they can potted ones so be sure not to neglect doing this. Turn the plants right upside down under the tap and be sure to rinse the undersides of the leaves most especially, where bugs reside. The showers will keep the plants fresh and clean, and even if there are no bugs around, it's a preventative measure.
I like to change my water and nutrients every week...not every 2 weeks. This is a personal choice though and it's up to you. The booklet recommends every 2 weeks, I believe. I find my plants grow faster and better though when I do it more often. JaNan and I also add things to our water basins...like epsom salts and egg shells. I also sometimes use another hydroponic fertilizer called Dutch Nutrient Formula. The aero-garden nutrients are great though as well.
So guess what?! While I was away my "Hahms Gelbe" yellow tomato seed from Germany, popped!! :D Well, it's starting to anyway. This type is a dwarf and it will only get around 8-10 inches tall. Looking so forward to trying it. I've usually eat red tomatoes so yellow will be a treat. Hope they're tasty.

Thank you so much for the info Sherry, I agree that the aerogarden should be saved for cool looking plants lol. I love your grebera daisy! I may just grow ornamental peppers in it along with the edible ones. I was wondering if I could buy liquid seaweed to take the place of the nutrients once I run out of those. I've never seen hydroponic fertilizer in any of the retail stores around here

Cam you mentioned Marigolds I think earlier, and I want to say the French Vanilla that Sherry sent me sprouted in ONE day in the AG. If you have any seeds left you might want to put one on top of one of the sponges and see if it will do that for you. It is so very cool watching them grow!
Cam, I use SuperThrive (you can get it at Lowe's - this lasts forever because you only use 3 or 4 drops per gallon) and Expert Gardener water soluble plant food (WalMart garden department), Epson Salts (dollar store). I also use the AG nutrients too, but what I do is rotate them every other week.
Greg if she hasn't already, Sherry has a boat load of seeds, exotic, rare (some very expensive I might add) and she is very generous in sharing them with everyone. I have a lot of seeds (but not anything like she does), and I will send you some also if you want me to.
Here are a few AeroGarden plants this morning:

Thanks so much Janan. I didn't think of Superthrive. That's a really great idea and I'll look for that fertilizer at Walmart. I forgot there is Epsom salt at the Dollar store. I may ask my mom because I need some for my peppers anyways. The Epsom salt wont build up in the pump and filter? Your plants are so beautiful Janan I can't wait until mine start growing. I think I'm going to first start out with peppers since they are so colorful.

Things are looking good, JaNan. :goteam:
Ok but one thing...your marigold leaves are scorched from being too close to the lights. I've had it happen with my halide so I know just how it looks. See the white burn marks? I want your foliage to be just as pretty as the blooms so try backing the light off a bit and see what happens. ;)
Love your cute little micro-toms...when you gonna eat 'em?
Cam, I'm glad you agree that you should only grow special things in your aero-garden. You want something that will hold your interest over time.
Thanks, about my Gerbera Daisies. I'm hoping the aero-garden lights will sustain the new growth...

And Cam I wanted to share this little hint with you too. This is called a Power Grow Light Booster that they sell at AeroGrow for $19.95:
YouTube - ‪Grow Light Boosters Time Lapse‬‏ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKFhn4F6M1Y&feature=player_embedded)
I went to the Dollar Store and bought a Windshield Sun Reflector for a buck. :ha: You can see it in the background of this shot:
http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/n580/JaNan16/20100603016.jpg
Yeah Sherry, I know they are burning. I need to move them to a unit with older bulbs. They seem to be a lot more sensitive to the light than the others in this unit with them. I am trying to keep the lights adjusted to benefit the majority of the plants. It is the only one in that unit that is doing it and it is the same unit as Thumbelina and Fish so the lights are quite a ways from the top of the marigold leaves.

That is so amazing Janan! Does the windshield cover do the same thing?
Jananas Bananas
07-03-2011, 07:00 PM
Yes, Cam it does. It just reflects the light making it even brighter for the plants. It especially works well as the light bulbs age in my opinion! :)
No, the salt doesn't seem to affect the pump or filters. I have cleaned a bunch of them. What clogs up the works are roots of the plants. That's normal and it's going to happen. :)

Thanks Janan, I may try the windshield cover. I'm glad to hear that the Epsom salts dont clug the pump I'll have to make a trip to the dollar store this week

Good evening, fellow Aero-Gardeners!!! :waving:
I use reflectors with my halide but my aero-gardens are both in my living room and so I want them to look appealing. A reflector would just take away from the look I'm going for...although I do wholeheartedly agree that they work excellently in directing way more light back towards the plants.
By not using one, a lot of light is lost. Instead though for me, I choose to grow other plants in pots around my aero-garden, or root cuttings, to use up the lost light and not waste it. Plus it looks very attractive with plants growing around the system as well. When the guy came to deliver the Chinese food the other day, he was practically straining his neck to see over me to get a look at my aero-garden! :ha: They're such a curious thing.
Ok so here is my "Thumbelina" bud tonight, getting huge...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_1522.jpg
Now it's your turn to tell me about burn marks on the leaves JaNan, but these are deliberate burn marks, not accidental! :ha: I'm waiting to see the first blooms at the top of the plant and then I'm going to chop a good 2 inches of the top, off!
That's right. ;) And then I'm going to keep it the size I want it be, because right now it's too tall and the light is up a little too high. Not sure just yet but I have good reason to suspect that my zinnia could turn out to be...yellow. :(
I'm not exactly thrilled about it but then again yellow was my brother's favorite color so I will try to see them in a positive way. I do hate mixes though because you never get what you want. I just hope you don't get yellow too JaNan or we're really in for a bore! Watch, you'll get the pink I want! :ha: I would be happy for you though...if I wasn't consumed with jealousy! :ha:
It's also a bit too soon to tell yet but just a guess from the way the bud looks. It could still turn out to be a nice color yet though. We'll soon see. The bud is growing quickly so it won't be long now...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_1527.jpg

The Hollyberry Lady
07-03-2011, 10:35 PM
Oh yes, you can surely root cuttings in your A-G Cam and it's even recommended in the instruction booklet. JaNan has done it with complete success already.
Did you get the whole booklet because I now have two and can send you the extra one if you like. It sounds like it may have more information in it for you.
How to Transfer a Potted Plant into Your Aero-Garden...
Ok you gotta take the little Fish seedling out of the soil and put the roots under the tap and gently wash away ALL the dirt from the roots so it doesn't get into your Aero-Garden.
Then you take a sponge and cut it like a hotdog bun, so it opens up but it isn't cut completely in half. You're going to place the root system of your little Fish seedling into the 'hotdog bun' sponge and fold the sponge back together with the roots inside and place it back into the plastic cup and into the aero-garden system to grow.
It's pretty easy but be sure to rinse all the dirt from the roots so none gets into the A-G water basin. It should make the adjustment quite well because of the naturally moist environment.
: )

The Hollyberry Lady
07-05-2011, 09:07 AM
So excited because one of the Colorado Blue Spruce trees is splitting down the side and white is showing through!!! No actual sprout just yet but I can tell it's getting ready! I guess having the seeds in the fridge was enough to break dormancy and no freezer treatment was necessary. Plus the A-G is so warm and moist...hard for any seed to resist germinating in.
Nothing yet on the "Buff Beauty" African Daisy seeds but I'm hoping one might pop soon. Their tough though, and even in soil I found they weren't reliable in coming up. The seeds were ridiculously priced too! If I can just get one to germinate, I'm in business. Fingers crossed.
Oh and I sowed some more 'winterberry' seeds around the edge of one sponge because my girlfriend wants to grow it. Some of the seeds look like they'll sprout soon. The Aster seeds are definitely getting ready to pop as well!
Nothing yet on the 'strawberry tree' or Aurora hot pepper seeds but they are all fat and swollen. Hoping I have success with everything and I don't have to re-sow anything. Worring about the 'buff beauty' seeds a bit.
So how are things, Cam?

Pepper seeds take a bit longer but they're worth the wait. You'll see little white tails growing out of them first and then they'll raise up. My Aurora seeds aren't up yet either and they were sown before yours were so don't worry. I know it's hard being patient though. ;)

I know it really is tough waiting for your stuff to come up...I don't like it either. :( It's good that you've already got some plants & cuttings in there though, so you can see quicker results.
JaNan & I like showing lots of shots so we can look back on our growings and remember when. It's also neat to look at dates and see how quickly things developed.
I think I was wrong about my zinnia being yellow. I think the buds all look the exact same until the petals start to develop and show their color. My bud is just now sending up petals so in a short time the color will be revealed...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_1603.jpg

That looks great Sherry! I like zinnias alot. I even saw some green zinnias at Lowes. I bet its so exciting to have blooming plants in your AG, one day I want to have fragrant flowers in my aerogarden
The Hollyberry Lady
07-05-2011, 06:11 PM
I want fragrant flowers too, Cam. :goteam:
Unfortunately, zinnias are not. They are also very prone to powdery mildew from high humidity and not enough air circulation, so I hope they won't succumb to this in the A-G due to the muggy atmosphere. That would suck.
Gosh I hope that zinnia bud is a pink shade of some kind. I'd wish for purple but I don't think there are any. I'd likely enjoy red and I'd even live with orange. Just please...not yellow.
I only like sunflowers in yellow...
Actually none of it is true...what it is about yellow is that it's an accent color, to be added with other more colorful colors. On it's own though, unless it's a sunflower, I usually find it boring.
Now watch, they'll be yellow, just because I bashed it! :ha:
I can't wait to see the true color and will show you guys the second I know. Even though on the one hand I don't like mixes, I do enjoy the anticipation & the mystery.

You mean fingers crossed they aren't yellow, Cam! :ha: I'd like red, actually.
Yes, the truth is I actually like yellow flowers, but as long as they're mixed with other brighter and prettier colors...then yellow can be stunning and enjoyable.
Upon closer inspection, I've noticed that it was small herb sprouts where I must have missed getting them, that were coming up in the pod with the Asters. So my Aster seeds are not germinating yet, and neither are my 'buff beauty' African Daisy seeds. I sowed everything on Thursday...late afternoon. It's been five days! I know I'm worrying for nothing but I can't help it.
How exciting, JaNan!!! :goteam:
Oh those petunias should be pretty. They will be so nice if they are white with purple throats. Hope they smell nice for you.
YAY, you've got white marigolds blooming! They get whiter as the blooms age. Wait until the thing unfolds into a giant snowball for you!!!
Yippeeeeee JaNan....things look great!

Something interesting...
My Alpine strawberry plant was growing kind of slowly in my original system and sending up one leaf at a time, but since I put it into my new A-G with brand new bulbs, the crown has been swelling like crazy! If you look very closely, you can see it's about to send up several leaves all at once...like 10 of them!!!

My original bulbs are almost 5 months old now and will need to be changed in one month's time. Wow, it just proves that you really should change your bulbs every 6 months. Luckily I have two extras here, all ready to go, because I knew the time was gonna come.
So pleased with my Alpine. I can tell it's gonna be a beauty! :goteam:

I would say within the week or sooner you should start to see some growth on the Fish...or maybe even sooner, Cam. And within two weeks or less the "Black Pearl" cutting should take off for you also. ;)
Do you have a FireCracker plant in there...or seeds?
: )

The Hollyberry Lady
07-06-2011, 09:52 AM
Add a Tablespoon for now and when the plants get bigger, add two! :D
Looking so forward to seeing your stuff grow too Cam. How fun & exciting this all is and watching each other's plants grow is thrilling also. Janan's purple peppers are gorgeous! :goteam:
So I'm a little worried about the Aster seeds, now that I saw it was an herb seed sprouting and not one of them. The seeds are a bit older but I had them in the fridge to preserve them. Some seeds don't last though, even in the fridge. I guess we'll see...
Worried too about the 'buff beauty' African daisy seeds that aren't showing signs of germination either. They're sporadic and unreliable so I may have to sow more if they disappoint. :(
Nothing on the Aurora seeds yet and although the Blue Spruce tree seed has split and white is showing through, it hasn't come up quite yet. Today is six full days by late this afternoon so I'm anxious for stuff to start sprouting. Gosh I'm impatient. :lurk:
One of the "strawberry tree" seeds does look like it's gonna pop soon though! How cool is that?! Oh I can't wait to grow it beside the Blue Spruce tree in the A-G! :goteam:
Ok I've got some good news and some bad news...
The bad news is that my "thumbelina" zinnia flower is turning out to be...
none other than...YELLOW!!!
Although the shot is blurry, here it is this morning...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_1624.jpg
Not to worry about some of the burn marks on the leaves...the plant is getting pruned back after the first flower blooms so I can put the light back down towards the majority of the others.
The good news is, I'm going to learn to love them anyway, even though they're yellow. They might look pretty with all the colored peppers. :D

Well that's the thing with mixes...it's the luck of the draw and you have to take what you get. This is the very reason though why I hate mixes, because they're always full of yellow and ones people don't want.
Now I'm anxious more than ever to see what color Janan's turn out to be. Oh I hope they're not yellow. Then again, if they turn out pink, I'll be super jealous! :ha:
It's a little too soon to judge about the Aster and African Daisy seeds yet, as some take 10-12 days to pop. If they're not up by then, I'll surely resow.
Yes, your room is going to be so pretty Cam! I know how excited you are. Me too.

I told Janan I'd collect some of the seeds later so she could grow this kind in her A-G too. I'll send some your way also, Cam. ;)
Here's a little Goji Berry sprout today...

That's OK Greg. :03: When I saw you had posted here I thought WooHoo - Greg got one!
How was your checkup today? I love your new little birds Pineapple and Lemon! TOO cute. You will have to be sure and tell us all about their antics and we will soon know them as well as we know little Henry!
Sherry, I THINK I have grow tail on my little German tomato seed! :woohoonaner: I just put one in the pod since I had such good luck with the MicroTom.
I also opened a new pod of the JigSaw and the Marble and started them at the same time I started the Hahms Gelbe and they have grow tails too!
I started two Miracle fruit seeds this morning. The seeds are kind of large so they are in separated pods. I think they may be swollen! I am as excited about this one as the Goji Berry!
Cam are you seeing any grow tails yet?

Well, as you can tell with Sherry and I, we check on ours constantly. Just peel that label off carefully and you can set it back down on it when you are through checking. I wouldn't seal it back on with an iron, because you will probably want to look again! :ha:

Ok, to give you an idea how long pepper seeds take Cam...
I sowed mine late Thursday afternoon, and just tonight my "Aurora" hot pepper seeds have a grow tail!!! So that's one week. I've had some in the past show a tail in four days though, so it just depends.
Still nothing on the winterberry, aster, or african daisy seeds. And the 'strawberry tree' seeds, although swollen and looking like they will sprout soon, haven't actually come up yet. Things seem to be taking extra long this time, or maybe it's just me.
Yeah, don't worry about lifting the lids, Cam. I lift mine every hour! :ha: I have no labels now...I just make a diagram on paper to show me where everything is.
What setting are you using, Cam? And what time do your lights go off at night? Mine go off now...11pm.

Yes, it is very easy to root cuttings. I've done it with several things.
They call it "cloning" at AeroGrow, here is their official blurb about it:

You don't have to buy a cloning kit to do it though. :)

Ok here's the 'thumbelina' zinnia bloom today. I had to take it out of the system altogether to get the shot. It's too tall and I'm gonna cut it back severely, very soon. Surprisingly, I'm actually kind of liking the soft pale shade of yellow...

And here is the 'marble' hot pepper plant today, 6 days after being taken out of my original A-G. It's in full bloom and hasn't wilted even one time. I'm confident that it'll make it...

I just changed both my water basins and added fresh nutrients. Things are really looking terrific but I will have to hack back my zinnia soon because the light is up as high as it can go. Plus I don't even see the flowers when they're up that high. The other plants aren't getting as much light either.

I can still mail you some seeds Greg but I think you should check the dollar store and some of the nurseries, as they'll likely still have some left. Or you can put plants or cuttings in your A-G.
Pick out what you want from me in the seed trader's thread and please don't be shy. ;) I'll try to send them out first thing, since this is real important, but I can't promise when they'll arrive with our slow mail service.

Hi AG gang! :waving:
This is my newest AG experiment. Yesterday when I was watering I had moved a garden trowel and accidently cut off a banana pup I didn't know was there. Rather than chunk it, I decided I would try something. Anyway, It has no roots on it and was very small and had also been munched on by grasshoppers, so not the best looking little specimen. I washed it off real good and stuck it down in a pod. I want to see if I can grow roots on it and see how it does. It's a Truly Tiny in case anyone is curious.

Sherry, my Thumbelina is Orange. It is yellow on the outside of the petals so it fooled me. I did move the lights up one notch yesterday and that is the second time I have raised them. It is the tallest one in that AG but not terribly tall. It should be fully opened by tomorrow I think.

Janan, your stuff is gorgeous!!! I never thought I'd say it, but I'm jealous of your orange zinnia! :ha: I think they're gonna be so bright and pretty for you! Love 'em.
Oh those petunias are so pretty! I wonder if they will have a scent. Be sure to check, most especially after the lights go off and have been off for at least an hour. Petunias release their fragrance at night.
Greg...
I'm so glad you will still have things to grow in your system. I knew you had something up your sleeve. :08:
The things the herb seeds are in, are called sponges. And no, you do not have waste the sponges even though you're not gonna grow the herbs.
Here's what to do...
Pull the labels off the plastic cups and take the sponges out. Using a toothpick, pluck the herb seeds out of the sponges...but you really have to be thorough or you'll miss some and they'll germinate in your unit later. When you think you have them all out, realize that you do not, and keep plucking! :ha: Re-sow your own seeds in the same sponges when you get all the herb seeds removed, and insert them back into the plastic cups and then into the A-G system. Easy as pie. ;)
If you see herb seeds sprouting later, those will be the ones you missed and you can just use a toothpick again to pluck them out of the pod. Make sense?
You don't need to waste money buying new sponges right now when those ones are still perfectly useable and good.
Hope this helps, Greg. Feel free to ask anything and Janan and I will be glad to help. You too, Cameron. :D

Greg I think I can help you. The white or clear things are called baskets and the growing medium are sponges. Some of the older kits have a light gray sponge and the newer ones have brown ones. The brown ones are actually shaped peat moss. The whole thing is called a pod. You can use the ones that come with your kit, but the sponges can usually only be used one time because the roots of the baby plants get down in there.. Take the plastic label off and take out your sponge. Open up the sponge a bit and you will see seeds glued onto the sponge. Gently take (or scrape) the seeds out of the sponge. I take the label and the seeds and put them in a baggy so I know what they are and can use them or trade them later. I soak the sponge in the nutrient water then put just one or two of my own seeds in the sponge. Tuck it back down in the basket, put the humidity dome on top and Viola! You are ready to grow.
Hope that helped! :)
Would you like a couple of Miracle fruit seeds from me or do you already have that bush? I know you already have a Goji. :ha:

Too funny, Janan! :ha: Oh well...I'm sure Greg appreciates all the help he can get. ;)
Yes you can collect seeds from your petunias and I don't believe they'll require pollination, either. You don't need to do anything because when petunia seedpods are developed and ready, they literally burst open and throw the seeds onto the sticky sappy leaves (they will be sticky by then) and you can pluck them off. They're black and small and at first you might mistake them for bugs! They'll seed naturally on their own later so just wait and enjoy. Those are really unique Janan and I don't recall seeing them before. So great there's purple in them for you
also! :goteam:
I snipped off my zinnia tonight! Took 4" of growth off including the bloom. I'm so glad though because I've got the light back down with the others...they were feeling neglected. It'll still bloom but it's much shorter now.
No news, but some herb seeds I obviously missed are just spouting now...day 7!!! I guess this confirms that I really shouldn't be worrying that my other seeds haven't popped yet. Just impatient, that's all. ;)
I will say though...that the strawberry plant is going crazy! It's gonna have a great crop of berries! I can so tell. It's great that it's getting this time while it's young to have the A-G lights all to itself...and it's responding amazingly. I'm really super excited watching it quickly develop for me.

Oh, and the tablets are the nutrients. You can buy them through the AeroGrow website or off eBay. But I listed some stuff I use on mine in an earlier thread here to Cameron that you can find at WalMart and Lowe's and the Dollar Store. I think Sherry uses the AG nutrients, but also has her own special mixture also.
Greg PM me your address and I will send you some seeds that you should get by Monday or Tuesday. Do you like tomatoes?

Great the leaves are already sappy Janan...the seeds will stick to the sap on the leaves and you can pull them off. ;)
So happy you love the petunia plant. It sure is a unique beauty and not one you see around. I'm kinda shocked. I bet it has a beautiful fragrance once it gets going. White flowers usually have a scent. :)

So Cam...any sprouts yet?
Nothing new for me just yet but I checked the seed packets and the african daisies take 10-14 days to germinate and the asters take the same...so I guess I won't worry just yet.
"Strawberry Tree" as well, can take awhile to germinate but the one seed looks very swollen and ready. Maybe in the next few days...

Hi Sherry, sorry that I havent been online. My brother and sister have been playing a computer game this weekend so I didn't get a chance to go online lol. The Hollyberry Lady

Well the fruit production will hopefully be on-going but they produce a fair amount for such a little plant. We'll see how it does in the A-G.

Ok cool Greg. Can't wait until you get started and involved in a 'project'...as they call it on the A-G site.
You seem surprised that I have lots of peppers in my A-G, Cam? I love them so I'm shocked I don't have more in there, but I have lots in my windows so I didn't want to over-do-it. They are so reliable and beautiful though, so why not!
Ok well my Blue Spruce seeds still aren't up yet but I can see white showing through the splits in the shells. Oh I hope they come up soon. I can barely stand it. :goteam:
I'll give it a few more days for the aster and african daisy seeds. Fingers crossed.

My zinnia, as you know, has been cut down considerably. It's putting on new growth though and some of the lower branches have buds, so I'll show it when it gets pretty again soon.

Nothing new has sprouted for me...at least not in the Aero-Garden. Still waiting, but the good thing is that I've got many seedlings in soil that can go into the A-G to fill the pods where seeds didn't sprout. We'll see...
Oh and this morning I noticed some of the white petals on my strawberry blossom have fallen off! This means a berry should grow now!!! :waving:

Update:
Ok so still no germination on the African Daisy, Aster, Gaultheria Procumbens, Strawberry Tree, or Colorado Blue Spruce!!!
This is what I think...
Some seeds don't like the A-G. Here's how I know...it's been over 10 days since I sowed the african daisy seeds in the system and not one of them germinated. Yet when I sowed some in soil, one sprouted in 3 days!!! :goteam:
I think from now on, I'm going to germinate my seeds in soil, like I did with the strawberry plant and then I'll transfer the seedling back into the A-G later. I think I'll have much better success with certain seeds and avoid all this waiting time.
When my 'buff beauty' african daisy gets bigger, I'll transfer it into the pod where the seeds didn't sprout. So glad I can still grow one in there. :D
I think I'm going to grow a blue cornflower, instead of the asters. I don't think they'll sprout anyway (it's been over 10 days) and I want something that grows quickly and reliably...which the cornflowers will.
I also have a little perennial seedling in soil that I'm going to put into the A-G called 'english daisies' or Bellis. Looking especially forward to seeing the beautiful blooms. :)
Aurora and Hamh's Gelbe seedlings are doing well. Goji is slow to develop but is just starting to put on it's 1st set of true leaves. I think there's two more buds coming on my strawberry
plant. :08:

I hate that the seeds didn't sprout Sherry. I have never seen a Blue Spruce sprout and it would have been interesting to see. Hi AG GANG! :waving:
Hey Greg did your get your seeds yet?
The easiest way for me to set the lights is - pick your time - say 11 o'clock at night. Get it on the grow cycle you want, mine are on tomatoes. At 11 hold the light button in for 5 seconds (the cycle light will start blinking) then let go and it will blink for a few more seconds and go off. (If the lights are off when you start this turn them on)
It will run just fine with six going, but I would put something in the seventh, even if it is a cutting of another plant. They do sell the little domes, but you can usually find something that will work. The little containers that they put condiments in will work as a dome (unless it is a black one). You can usually find them at buffets, or take out restaurants. Sometimes children's cough medicines have a clear measuring cup. Same thing - that will work. Saran Wrap will work but you will have to make a teepee out of tooth picks. Anyway that's a couple of ideas for you.
Need to go take some progress pictures, be back soon!

So what did you plant, anyway? :lurk: Dying to know...
Even though it hasn't been 6 months quite yet, I decided to change my bulbs in my original system today, so the plants will be more vigorous. I hate old bulbs where the plants just dwindle along. :(

Ill see whar happens. I noticed there was more than one herb seed in the sponges I wasnot sure so I put more than one seed in. I have it set on flowers I was not what to set it at. When do you put the nutriants? I added the two tablets like it said to do.

Greg, the lights will blink red when it is time to add nutrients. With you just starting it helps remind you. Once your plants get good root systems on them you will have to feed and water more often.
You can reuse the sponges if they don't get filled with roots, but if I am transplanting I plant the sponge too. You can get small orders of sponges off eBay, or larger orders off AeroGrow.com. I have 10 units so I am ordering bulk from AeroGrow.

So I sowed a "jigsaw' and a 'miracle fruit' seed in the A-G tonight, and tomorrow morning I'll re-sow a couple of the 'strawberry tree' seeds in soil where I had success with them before. Seeds that I know will like the A-G environment, I directly sow in my unit, but the others I plant in soil, then transplant into my system later.
Gonna transplant one of the African Daisy "buff beauty" seedlings into the A-G in a few days to a week's time. I won't be growing the asters but have blue cornflowers instead.

What seeds did you sow, Greg?
I've got my new Veggie Pro set up but not filled with water yet. I'm not going to plant the tomato kit that came with the unit. Instead, I've decided on 'purple beauty' bell pepper, a white bell pepper from Hungary, Janan's pumpkin bells that ripen through many beautiful colors, and I haven't decided what to grow in the other three pods but I will today.
My new system has three bulbs instead of 2 so there's way more light. It also came with the trellis so I can support taller plants! Do you believe the lights raise to over two feet?!!!
Janan, what do you think of it? I already bought the extra three bulbs too, so I'd have them onhand in 6 months. There were 3 bulbs in the pack for 20 bucks, which I thought was reasonable.
This is it for me though...I'm not buying anymore aero-gardens! I only want three A-G's total.
I'll show a shot later when I get it completely going and let you guys know what I'll be growing in the other pods...

:goteam: That's GREAT Sherry! :woohoonaner:
I bought a white one just like it about 3 weeks ago. I wanted the extra height of the unit and the trellis system. I haven't bought any extra bulbs for it yet, but will next month. $20 bucks for the 3 pack is really good because they are $30 plus shipping through AeroGrow! :) The base of the three bulbs are different than what fits in the other units so the new ones I have don't work (as you already know). I transferred the GoJi and Tristan strawberry into it, just so they could get more light. It also has the JigSaw and Marble, and Super Hot Purple. I need to transfer the mini Jalapeno into it from the LadyBug because it is too tall for her and I have already maxed out the height on it. I have been changing things around in them anyway. I'll try to get pictures of it tonight or tomorrow for you.
Gotta run! Have to get ready for a party today!
Later gang!

I was thinking of moving my strawberry plant into the new veggie pro to give it even brighter light while I'm waiting on stuff to germinate.

I've changed my mind about some stuff and wondered what you thought too Janan, since you've been using your systems for a while too...
I think the reason why some of my seeds don't come up in the A-G sometimes is because I don't cover them with the labels to keep things somewhat dark until they pop. Plus I don't bury the seeds in the sponge, I just lay them on top. Some don't mind, but some do. I'm doing things a bit differently with my new veggie pro system, so I can see if it makes a difference in germination.

Sherry that's 6 things, what are you putting in the 7th pod, or have you decided yet? I usually use two seeds in each pod, one I tuck down in the hole and one I lay on the rim of the hole. I usually have both sprout but one sprout is more vigorous than the other. I haven't really paid attention to which was the stronger of the two but I will watch from now on and let you know.
Cam we need to see your baby pictures too!
Greg so you have any grow tails yet?
Here is my GoJi, as you can see it didn't branch out but grew another single stem straight up. Do I need to cut it again or what? It seems to be strong but it looks spindly. The cut is about half way up and the new portion has angled slightly.

Your Purple Super Hots are ahead of mine! I planted those three kinds in my LadyBug several weeks ago and the Super Hot took forever to sprout (and only one of the seeds popped). The other two, Red Fire and Mini Jalapeno are getting ready to set buds! I just moved them to another unit. I really think that Purple Super Hot plant is beautiful with that mottled like purple coloring. Here's mine from this morning:

Interesting about the Goji plant...they branch out in a pot when pruned. Not sure what to suggest, but I'd keep pruning it and not letting it get tall and spindly. It looks good though Janan...healthy.
Your seedlings look terrific, Cam. Thanks for sharing with us. I bet you are so excited watching stuff grow. It's too fun. The 'purple super hot' seedlings are so colorful and pretty. Can't wait to see them more as they grow.

I wonder if I could make one.... I could use a fishtank air pump and air stone, a small tote or some sort of container, and set it under my plant light or something..... :ha:
I think I have a good idea growing, maybe I should sketch it out or something.
EDIT:
Here is my poorly drawn idea

But maybe instead of a air stone I could use a small fish tank filter I have that doesn't have a filter cartridge in it...
EDIT AGAIN:
I am looking at how to make a my fish tank air pump lift water, I don't think many plants like having their roots under water :ha:

This is what I managed to come up with
http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/ae92/jreidsma/DSC01108.jpg
I found a wide mouth jar and took the flat insert out of the lid. So it was just the ring and one of my plastic pots just happened to fit inside that! :goteam::woohoonaner: That saved a lot of work.
Then I ran a air stone and hose through one of the holes in the plastic pot and into where the water is going to be.
All I need to do now is get some rocks from the pet store, fill the jar up with water (with added fertilizer) and a seed to see if it works :) I was thinking a dwarf marigold or something small.
And I am going to put something around the jar so the roots don't get damaged from the sun, and so algae doesn't grow in it.
The Michiganders Aerogarden jar ;) or maybe HydroJar

Good morning all. Well here is the first sign of life in the aero-garden. Im not sure what it is. I planted some patunias and some empress trees. I also planted the chives but there labeled. I have another pod that has a little green showing but nothing so far in the others. Maybe the seeds are no good. I will give it some time. If nothing I will plant some of the things Janann sent me.

I saw a few of those at Lowes the other day. They are beautiful plants! I'm definitely going to plant more drought tolerant things, maybe that will be one of them next year. I'm trying to get some Desert willow seeds to sprout. I didn't know there was a pink and white one. I love the foliage because it looks so delicate
Jananas Bananas
08-02-2011, 01:34 PM
I KNOW! To be so tough, yet LOOK so delicate! I would definitely put them on your list. Since you know someone that has some, the blossoms make seed pods and I have found them really easy to germinate. So this fall you could get some seeds pods off their plants or some around town. Because of the drought a lot of seed pods are developing early so keep your eyes peeled! If Lowe's still has some by the time they make pods she (your sister) could probably get some for you also!
Willow87
08-02-2011, 02:19 PM
I'll either have to look around town, or hope that the plants at Lowe's go on Clearance since they have been there a while. Or I 'll just order seeds next year. I think that plant with desert willows would be a beautiful combo. I planted the rest of my Texas Mountain Laurel seeds, so hopefully I will have several of those. The 2 seeds that I planted earlier in the year are still a couple of inches tall lol

I was a bit shocked this weekend when my old friend/ sometimes nemesis the Hollyberry Lady sent me an early birthday present. Quite stunned actually it was...... A Brand New Aerogarden.... of my very own!!!!!:woohoonaner:
I've always known HbL was one of, if not the most generous person in the org and that's saying a lot but this takes the cake.
Needless to say I set it up as soon as I could and after making several choices and changing my mind repeatedly about everything i wanted to grow ended up doing none of them! For my first attempt at it I decided to plant 4 fig cuttings and 3 papaya seeds that a friend recently brought back from Hawaii for me. Here's some shots I took yesterday:

Needless to say it's a beautiful unit and I'm proud to have it especially having recieved it from my good friend. It even came with a set of reflectors ( seen hanging behind it) to add additional light to the plants. You can bet I'll be changing my mind again as soon as things are rooted/ and or up and growing and planting lots more and posting it here as I do more and more with it.
Thanks Hollyberry !!!:woohoonaner:

Let's see, if I can get close with the date I started the Goji. OK I made a post on May 12th that I had Goji sprouting. I think they sprouted within three or four days of putting them in a pod. So, about three months old.

Oh Bob that's so great that you got it set up now! It looks so fabulous. I love the stainless steel and the reflector. So classy looking.
What I'd like to know is how is it that you ended up with an even better aero-garden than any of us have?! :ha: You have the best system that Aero-Garden has to offer! You are one suck, you know that?
Just so everyone knows, Bob made me buy it for him, by threatening to publically expose a secret I have. :ha: It was total and utter extortion!
So yeah Bob, sorry you had the system for a week but couldn't set it up because they forgot to send you any baskets and lids. Glad they made restitution. I can see how excited you are. Oh and thank you for the compliments Bob. ;) You're a very generous person too and a super great friend. I hope you enjoy your new wonderful Aero-Garden Extra Elite system immensely. :08:

Lkailburn...
What size are those cells that contain your Goji plants? They may be ready for more root room at this point and that would be a reason for poor and slow growth...even deformed growth.
Or maybe your little Goji plants are in need of a good feeding. At this stage lots of nitrogen is good and it'll promote some strong vegetative growth.
Ok my "Thumbelina' dwarf zinnia plant is blooming again...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_0220-1.jpg
It got pruned back severely but this is it's comeback...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_0221.jpg
This shot shows the strawberry plant, "Little Blue" and "Explosive Amber" hot peppers, dwarf zinnia and "Micro-Tom" plants. I accidently let the water level get a bit too low, if you notice any brown edges...

Hi HBL,
Good to hear from you! The little red 4pack is probably 1"x2.5"x3.5" tall? somewhere around there? I started the goji's in a 9cell pack of 1"x1"x1" and then transplanted 4 to that, 1 died.
I bet fert is what's missing. I am terrible with keeping a schedule for it. Mostly because i'm not sure what's best for all the different plants i have. Everyone has different ideas about ratios. Then there is soluable vs non soluable debates. So i think in my head i just put it off. Sad i know. What type of fert are you using on your gojis and at what schedule?
Oh, also, i have included a picture of my 7pod. Currently empty because i can't decide what i want to start in there. I have all kinds of edible tropicals that i just stuck in some dirt and want to see if those planted in the AG would sprout quicker. But haven't set it up yet.

Mind if I join in this aerogarden fun?
http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/ae92/jreidsma/DSC01142.jpg
I got it at a garage sale, for FIFTY CENTS!!!!!!!! OMG :D That was the best thing EVER!!!!
It works perfectly, it just has some stains on it. And it did not have any sponge pod things or fertilizer.
So I went to the local Hydroponic center and asked. The guy there gave me some sponge things to try and told me of the fertilizer he had. And he also gave me some mother of a thousand plants and jade plants! :D :goteam::woohoonaner:
I am going to bring him some seeds and get the liquid hydroponic fertilizer he showed me for his generosity :) I didn't pay for any of the stuff he gave me.
I have one question about something though. Does the sponge/seed pod thing stay constantly wet? The sponges I have in it stay wet. And if I touch them some water comes out.
And what do you guys think I should grow in it?

Seriously, you guys did some amazing things with your Aerogardens! And to think I was only growing tomatoes!

:goteam: WOW!!! That is AWESOME!!!! :woohoonaner: That has got to be the best bargain yet!!!!! You even beat ME and I am the queen of CHEAP! I am so proud for you! Stains do not interfere with function. Once your plants fill out you won't see them anyway!
Yes, the sponges stay moist 24 / 7.
At first I wasn't very daring with my seed choices, but now Katy bar the door! I really like starting tree seeds in mine. Or difficult seeds, or rare seeds. Take your pick! And of course we all like growing YOUR MicroTom seeds because they are so wonderful! (Sherry told me she got hers from you, originally!) Maybe something that you haven't had much luck with or something that you haven't tried before. One thing that we can say, you can START succulent seeds in them, but once they pop take them out because it is just too wet for them.
I'm so excited for you! :woohoonaner:

I didn't know everyone was getting their micro toms from the plants I gave Sherry :) They are all relatives! :ha:
I am actually wanting to grow something that can stay in the aerogarden probably. I was thinking micro tom tomatoes. But then what else is there to choose from :ha:
I don't have any micro tom seeds right now though... so I don't know if I will be doing any in it. I will have to wait and see what all I find. I should be getting some different types of peppers from someone in a trade... I don't know if I can wait that long though :ha:
Oh, and the aerogarden is the 2007 one I think.

Well, you may change your mind several times. And that's OKAY!!! I am truly having a ball with mine! (and I have 10 units!!!) :ha:
WARNING I have said it before and will say it again. They are addictive!!!! Have you seen the AG growers website? They have grown WATERMELON in them. YUP, not lying!!! I don't think there are limits. Just use your imagination. I think my favorite things are edibles. Because I know exactly what the plants are eating and know in turn then I know what I am eating. You can use the overthrow lighting for pot plants too!
I hope you love it as much as we do! Be sure and tell us as soon as you decide!!!!

I do have some stuff I could put in them right now... I have some maverick mix marigolds that stay small, or I always have the Zinnia 'Thumbelina' that Sherry sent me last year. I also have burgundy beans or green beans, but they are a little big for mine.
Yes, they are addictive! :) But I have very limited room, so this one will probably be my limit right now. Now if there wasn't a TV in my room.... I could have a few more ;) but we use that TV to record stuff at night. I don't even sleep in my bed room! :ha:
I might have to go to the store and see what seeds I can find :)
I went to every store that would deal in stuff like this and no one knew what a aerogarden even was! The guy at Ace's hardware knew what they where but Ace's hardware decided that they needed to be discontinued because they weren't selling enough of them.
The only place that had anything dealing with them was the hydroponics place. And I just had to compromise on what sponges to get. But thats ok :) I will have to return there and give him some seeds, and buy the liquid hydroponic fertilizer. I have to get a "grow" one and a "bloom" one because there isn't really a general purpose one I guess :/ oh well.

Jordan, I really had a similar experience. I checked online before I wasted the gas and the stores that said they sold them didn't have them nor did they know what they were so I wasted the gas anyway. I ended up getting my first "new" one off eBay. All the rest I have gotten off Craigslist.
I can tell you what I use. I listed it here in this thread for Cameron earlier so sorry for the repeat. I use SuperThrive 4 or 5 drops per gallon you can get it at Lowe's or Home Depot. And water soluble Expert Gardener that I found in the garden center of Wal-Mart. I also use Epson salts from the Dollar Store and put egg shells in the water. I can understand you wanting to get your stuff from the guy that helped you out so much though.
You can always got to Home Of The AeroGarden From AeroGrow International (http://www.AeroGrow.com) or eBay for supplies if you need to. I have gotten stuff from both.

The fertilizer was very cheap at the hydroponics place, that is why I would probably stick with them. And that was the only place that the people actualy knew what they where :ha:
They had some that was $9 for what looked to be a quart. I would need the grow and bloom one but they would last a long time probably. Or he had a smaller more concentrated one. I will just have to find out when I go back.
When I went to ace's hardware the guy there said they had a couple full systems at the Holland department. And that they didn't sell well so they where on over 50% off clearance. He called the store, and they just sold them :'(
Hope all your stuff goes well, Greg, :) maybe after they grow a while they will be able to be IDEd.
Hope every ones plants do well :)

Greg, I'm pretty sure that isn't the Empress tree now that it has some growth on it. Didn't you say you also planted some petunia seeds? Maybe? The Empress tress start out nearly microscopic. I want to say they put out two leaves each time. They are heart shaped and velvety. My petunias are velvety also though. It took the Empress a loooong time to get going.
Jordan, is you nutrient light staying on? With the Aerogarden 3 unit, all you have to do is hold in the reset button for a few seconds, until it starts blinking a little faster, and then while still holding it down, press it once more, and it should go off for you! I have a three pod LadyBug that I didn't get any instructions with so I have had to dig on the internet for info.

Hi,
I found the manual online also :) I just haven't thought to turn the light off :ha:
I was going to wait and see how long the fertilizer I would get would last. If it only last the 2 weeks like the fertilizer timer in the aerogarden is. Then I was going to set it up to time for it anyways. That's one reason I was waiting to turn the led light off.
These things are cool! :) Glad I finally got one :)

Did you guys know that you can place the basin of your A-G outdoors?! Like if your plant required pollination, you coud take the basin off the base and put it outside each day.
Congrats on your new aero-garden, Jordan!!! :08:
Do you have new bulbs? I picked you up a fluorescent grow bulb for your desk lamp. Do you have baskets and sponges and lids? I can send ya some, if not. I'll surely send you some micro-tom seeds as well as many peppers you'll love.
Greg, I found that the aero-garden is too warm in summer for some seeds to germinate successfully, but in winter they pop like crazy. I germinate things in soil when they fail in the A-G, and then I just transfer them later. ;)
Ikailburn...
I think your Goji roots are ready for more room...and a good feeding. I feed mine Dutch Nutrient Formula, a water soluble organic solution once a week....usually Sunday mornings. Once you feed them, you will see a big difference.
Just pick a fertilizer that's right for you and don't mind advice that promotes only one way of doing things. Gardening is very personal and one way can be every bit as successful as the next.
I haven't set up my three-pod system yet but I will soon...

Hi,
Sherry, if the mail services are back up we could do a trade :) I have some sponges in it but I think the ones made right for it would be a lot better for it. Some micro toms would be nice also ;) Will send ya a PM in a minute :) I don't have any new bulbs either, :ha:
The weather in Michigan is just too bad for most indoor plants. And then the pest make it just not worth me bringing my plants outside. So I keep all my exotic houseplants inside year round. Then I just hand pollinate them :) Thanks for the tip on being able to move the basin though :)

Jordan, what have you started in yours so far?
Oh, I wanted to mention you need some humidity domes on them. Greg was shorted one in the kit he bought and I made some suggestions for him if you need some ideas. Sherry had mentioned she would send you some baskets and sponges too.

I am not doing anything with mine until I get the stuff from Sherry. Then I wouldn't have to worry about trying to get the plants out of the sponges I have now into the new ones.
I am going to wait and see what I get from now until then to see what I want to grow in mine. I was thinking micro toms or something that would stay very small and fruit (possibly) but I will just have to wait and see.
Then for humidity domes I could always use some plastic tub things I have :ha: They would fit exactly over the sponges and be about an inch tall.

The little banana leaves don't look too good. I am not sure if it is the intensity of the light or the wetness, but wanted to show that not everything likes the AG environment! So far the new leaf looks OK though.
