:ha::ha::ha: I meant to say "Jigsaw"!!! Too funny.
I'm gonna go check and see if it really is the beginnings of a tomato blossom...
I can't tell if it's a bud that's deveoping or not, but there's no yellow yet. I think it might have been the lighting. It won't be long though now and it will be producing! Can't wait. :goteam:
This shot is so cute, I'll post it here too for those that follow along. I'm really just posting it to make Bob jealous! :ha:

JaNan, you just have no idea how much I love this plant! I think it's one of the nicest I've ever grown!
I love it that it came from you as well...so cool.

That picture looks like it is posing for you! A pepper plant with a personality!!! :ha: Well that should definitely make Bob jealous! It could be a picture post card for the perfect Hot Marble plant. I started three more seeds, and I think I have the start of grow tails.
http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/n580/JaNan16/20110331002.jpg
Boy that sure looks like a little bud on that tomato. I have gone back and looked at it three more time and have even blown it up. it must be a little curl of new leaves.
I keep forgetting to take pictures of my tomato babies. 100% survived started in the AG transferred to Spagnum Peat Moss. They are sooooo cute. Maybe I can get a quick shot tonight when I post this.
This is the old seed Steve. They are about two years old but I have at least two spouting (mini passiflora).
http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/n580/JaNan16/20110331012.jpg
There are tiny tree seeds (older than two years) on the surface of the sponge and I have at least three sprouting though I am not sure you can see them. The big seeds (in comparison) are pepper seeds.

Thanks for saying my marble plant is perfect, JaNan. The credit goes to the aero-garden though, not to me.
It does look like it's posing! I just loved the shot because it all looks so purple. Such an appealing & attractive little plant JaNan. Thanks again for sharing it.
You're really having terrific success with germination, I see. Things look good.
So what are you actually going to keep in the system to grow? You have 7 pods, so what will stay in them this time? I can't wait to find out.
Do you like what I've chosen to grow in mine for my first cycle? I figured it was a good mix of some cool things to keep my interest for awhile. The thing is though, peppers are perennial indoors so they'll live on and continue to produce fruits! :08: My little marble beauty could be in there for awhile.
I can't wait to see the first baby marble pepper! By the looks of things, it won't be long now. I can tell the blossoms will be really purple and pretty.
The "Little Blue" pepper is producing buds so they should have fruits roughly around the same time and they're the same size plants too. Don't worry, you're getting seeds for that as well JaNan. ;)
So ok, tell me what you'll be growing in your pods...

One leaf on that whopper could be a meal! WoW! I can see the little Sundews now without even blowing up the picture. Isn't that a beautiful bloom? It looks like a purple star. I'm so glad you love it. I hope I can get one that looks half as good! That color combination in that picture with the lime green and purples, I like it a lot.
Here is a new sprout popping today. This is a pink oleander - another seed that came in the same trade as the mini passi, so the seed is over two years old. I am very pleased!

http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/n580/JaNan16/20110401107.jpg
I am not sure which I will keep in the Ag's. I know I will keep all of them in there a lot longer than I did the others. Probably the Hot Marble for sure because of yours. Many of the plants are tall, so they will have to come out just for the size factor - but that will be a while yet. Maybe the petunias if they don't take it over.
~JaNan
The Hollyberry Lady
04-01-2011, 11:00 PM
Petunias can be pruned and shaped, so don't worry about them taking over, JaNan. ;)
Your stuff looks great. The basil is coming along already.
I'm getting so excited about the marble plant and can't wait for that blossom to fall so I can see one of the fruits. How cool that it's produced so quickly and wonderfully. I'm sure yours will be every bit as gorgeous JaNan, so no worries there.
Yes, the Genovese basil leaves are enormous! The flavor is to die for and I'm getting so spoiled that I can't do without it now. I'm going to be harvesting the Violetta soon too, by the looks of things. I actually noticed this morning that it shot up really tall over night! The growth on my plants is amazing now and I'm keeping everything well fed.
Did you see the post on the aero-garden site where Pixie was asking me what the pH reading of my water was? Are you intending on buying a pH kit, JaNan? I think it would be cool to know the exact figures and then adjustments could be made. What do you think?

Sherry is the precious little strawberry one you are keeping in the AG or are you going to transplant it? Is everything you have it in now, staying? Also, since you have such a variety growing, what do you have your settings on? I have both mine set on tomatoes and peppers. ~J
The Hollyberry Lady
04-03-2011, 02:54 PM
Yes JaNan, the strawberry is staying to grow in the system...and produce berries!!! :goteam:
Also yes, the plants that you see in my system now are the ones that will stay in there to
mature. :2216:
I have mine on the herb setting because the lights stay on the longest. They go off at midnight now and come back on at 6 am.
I just changed my water and added some more nutrients. I also added some epsom salts and a couple Tum anti-acid tablets to dissolve and provide calcium. It can help with blossom drop on tomatoes and peppers and can be used in soil also. ;)
I bet next week they grow like crazy, after everything's been freshened. I enjoy watching the growth spurts after I feed them. Everything is just thriving for me now. :woohoonaner:

Sherry, can you get a close up shot of that variegated one for me?
Boy, I would say the the Hot Marble Pepper is the perfect plant for the AeroGarden! That thing is so very pretty. Do you have a frontal shot of the two newly opened blooms? It's getting so wide! Is it shading your little strawberry?
I just posted on the AG site this morning. I think they are interested in the unusual stuff that I am trying to sprout. Kinda like oh yeah we are way ahead of you with the peppers and mint, no big deal. But a banana seeds, and papaya, oh my!!! :ha:
I just started a cherimoya seed in a pod this morning. We'll see how that goes! :ha:

The Hollyberry Lady

I'll try to get a front shot JaNan, but there's a lot of branches so I hope they won't be blocking. It's such a compact plant that it's not shading my strawberry plant at all. I adore this plant JaNan!
Yup, I'll get a close up shot of the variegated type beside the two marbles in a pot, but I gotta go for an hour or so. Be back soon. Another variegated type showed up elsewhere but it's not from your seeds. Can't imagine what it is.
Yeah, it's cool how impressed they all are by our stuff. Most of them just grow stuff from the aero-garden kits they purchase, so they're very impressed with our varieties.
If those banana seeds pop, you'll be the aero-garden banana queen! :ha:

I sent you and Cam seeds for it and I will be giving some to Dean as well. Soon I'll have many more seeds when I harvest a couple cherries. I know you'll enjoy this adorable, yet high-yielding variety. ;)
Yes, most of the marble pepper buds are set down in under the top layer of leaves. I can't wait to watch that one begin to grow. :D
It seems like only yesterday that everything was just a seedling. It amazes me how quickly things develop and thrive in there. I can't wait to watch your marble seedling grow too JaNan. It's so fun watching each other's stuff like we do.

I'm sure I will love it as much as you are the Marble peppers! That is another that produced buds quickly! That bud down at the base is too cute!
Since I skipped a day, I will post some pictures tomorrow. I really like us posting to this thread and the changes a day makes is really amazing. Almost like time lapsed photography! :)

Oh and surprisingly I took all of the basil out of the system tonight...I'm bored with it. :ha:
I need something more exciting in there with the others. I'm going to sleep on it and decide what to put in there tomorrow. I may put in an already existing seedling from one of my windows, or start seeds for something else. I'm indecisive. I have a blue cornflower seed sprouting so I could grow that with the zinnia...not sure yet.
I'll let you know tomorrow, but I might wait a couple days on pictures, except for the peppers of course...

Some changes...
I wanted to grow a zinnia and a blue cornflower in one pod together because they both only reach 6" tall, but I knew the other zinnia was too big now and it will shade the blue cornflower from developing. They need to germinate and develop together. Here they are popping alongside each other. Germinaion occured in less than 24 hours...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC03377.jpg
I also had some of the Gaultheria Procumbens evergreen "winterberry" dwarf shrublet seeds come up in the pod with the micro-tom, but I didn't want them be shaded so I put them on the edge of the sponge with the zinnia & cornflower...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC03378.jpg
The zinnia and cornflower will be the only case where I'll grow two plants in one pod. They're just so perfect together though and I'd love to have both of them in my system. It'll be so pretty.
Now I'll have three kinds of hot peppers (little blue, marble, and jigsaw) and a tomato and strawberry plus two kinds of flowers!!! I think I'm satisfied now. :D This will be perfect and it will hold my interest longer.
So both basil plants and the old zinnia have been taken out of my system.
Hope you guys aren't mad at me for changing things a bit. :ha:
Sometimes you don't know until things get going a bit, what you really want. I want it to look like a bouquet of zinnias and cornflowers. The zinnias will be a surprise color but the cornflowers will definitely be blue.
What do you think JaNan?

The Hollyberry Lady
04-08-2011, 09:17 PM
I'm just sorry that I didn't grow them sooner so they'd be blooming by now. It's an experiment to see how well two plants that are about the same size, grow in one pod.
The 'little blue' gets about 8" in a pot, but it seems smaller in the A-G for some reason. I like it. The peppers are really hot and there's a lot of them. They start out bluish/purple and they turn red later. I sent you a few seeds to get you started JaNan, if you feel like growing one.
I miss the big zinnia I had. It would have bloomed soon. :( Now I'm starting over.
What's worse, my one girlfriend is trying to get my strawberry seedling out of me, because I made a mistake of telling her I have five more seeds in soil that I'm waiting to germinate. I did promise her an Alpine this season but I would like her to wait and have one of the soil grown ones when they come up. I sowed them a week and a half ago.
She insists she'll kill a younger seedling so I may give her the older one and transfer one of the soil sprouted plants back into the A-G later. One way or the other, I'll be growing a strawberry plant in my system, so don't worry. I still haven't decided yet if I'll give it to her though. I'm too nice. ;)

Sherry, I couldn't pass it up. It was being sold by a college student that will be moving back home in a couple of months and couldn't take it with her. :)
I have three of the 7 pod pro elites (the ones with the stainless steel), they are all just alike:

Carrie's is a solid black one, but is a 7 pod unit. I am not going to put water in it or I will keep it! :ha:

Great shots...love the pink sprouts.
Don't mean to burst your bubble JaNan about your marigold seeds, but they are notorious for being fast sprouters, especially if they're fresh. My French Vanilla ones germinate in soil in less than 24 hours if super warm and two days otherwise, so I'm not surprised the aero-garden would be extra speedy. Still totally cool and good for you! ;)
Marigolds grow super quickly and I can only imagine in the A-G! They'll grow like crazy! What color and type is that JaNan? How tall will they get? I have some dwarf french petit ones in a mix of pretty colors. They all grow 6" tall. I'll send some in your 2nd envelope if you like?
Will you be growing those marigolds in your unit or transplanting them to soil? Remember to keep the strongest seedling but remove the extras. So pretty to have flowers in the A-G. :goteam:

If I wasn't packing and moving, I'd have a few more myself JaNan. When I move and get settled, I'll surely buy more systems then.
Plus the garden season is here and my many windows will more than supply me with what I need to grow some terrific plants. When Fall hits and there's less light, I'll be inspired to buy another one...or two. :ha:
I think my mom is getting one to grow herbs in! She's totally impressed with mine and wants to get involved. I don't blame her.
Great set-up JaNan, even though I'm a bit jealous. ;)

They are the petite dwarf 6 inch ones that I have pictured in the seed trader thread. Orange and yellow. The leaves are fern-like and I think it would be nice to have one or two stay in one of them. Your French Vanilla is a full size one isn't it? What colors are your mixed? I thought since they were only six inches that it would be a nice flower to try.
I don't know what Carrie will grow first. Probably the herbs because she is cooking a lot lately and loves using herbs. I know she is really going to love it!
Oh yeah, it is the dark hot pink blossom! She said the tag said it was "Tristan", but she bought four of them and they all say "Tristan" and it was the only one with pink blossoms. So it is either mis-marked or they come in more than one color.

Yeah my mom's gonna grow herbs too, although she does enjoy hot peppers but not too hot.
The white marigolds are full size but perfect for pots. You have just got to grow one when the seeds arrive...as they're one of my all-time favorite flowers!!!
The dwarf french petit marigolds I have are a mix of a full range of oranges, mahoganies, reds and yellows. They are fully double crested flowers that are only 1" across. The plants are loaded with them!
Now you've got me wanting to grow marigolds in my A-G JaNan!
I'm trying to grow all that you're growing in three units, in one! :ha:
I can send you some of my french petit ones if you like JaNan, so you can have more colors?
I hope my strawberry seeds come up soon. If I have extras JaNan, I could always send you a seedling, until I collect more seeds. When you asked for some, I'd already sown the last of them, but I only need a couple plants and that'll be good for me.
Ok I'll check out your link...

Yeah Sherry I think I would. I really think the fern leaves will look really nice with the regular shaped leaves don't you? And the petite dwarfs are the perfect size. I don't mind starting the large stuff, knowing I will be taking them out, but I want to really give some thought to the ones that stay in. And I like the fact that we can do our own, and not be tied down with a set kit! That is no imagination! :giveflowersnana:

Wow, I love it JaNan!!! :goteam:
It's everbearing and it's perfect for pots with few runners...that's all I need to know! :ha:
Oh thank you for sharing seeds. I'll be getting the lighter paler pink kind at the end of April and I'll be sure you get some too.
That one you have would be cool in the aero-garden since it's compact with few runners...that's why I like Alpine types because they're small with no runners at all.
I sent you the Florida Star too JaNan, but I'm not sure of the growth habit.

Yes, I'm giving it a lot of thought too JaNan and that's why I've been making some changes recently. I'm growing all plants that grow 6-8" tall. It will be so lovely when everything is grown and mature. :D
No problem...I'm adding it to the list of what to send you next, so you can have all the colors for the dwarf petit french cuties. ;) They'll be great in the A-G, no doubt.
You know what I love most about my A-G plants? I never have to remember to water them! :ha:
Seriously though, I like that they're always hydrated and I don't have to worry. I have enough plants to water as it is!

I understand. We had another 93 degree day today. I watered front and back just before sunset. If I try to water in the morning, the droplets act as magnifying glass and puts burn dots on the leaves. And with it this hot they are THIRSTY!
We really have two growing seasons, Spring and Fall. Summer is way to hot and burns everything, so I will enjoy having things in the AG's that I can't outside in the summer. Everybody thinks I'm crazy, but this apparently is the time to buy them off Craigslist. Everybody is growing outside right now and not messing with their AG's or just got tired of them.

Every gardener has their own personal needs and ways they want to do things so I just let people decide for themselves what works best. It's different for everyone.
I think it's great you have what you need JaNan and you're sure getting good deals on them too. Wow! They look nice, all three in a row like that. I know you're loving and enjoying them. I can imagine you every morning hovering over them to see what's grown and sprouted! ;)
I jump out of bed myself to go see what's new everyday. It's totally exciting.
Yes, water when the sun isn't on the leaves. Ever considered watering before the sun comes
up? I used to sometimes.

I swear Sherry, your marble pepper looks like it is MANY plants, not just ONE! That is so amazing looking! I'll bet you going to have blossoms opening all over it at the same time. Won't that be incredible! I am so glad you love it. It is much, much prettier than it's Momma was - and I thought it she was beautiful! :ha:
I wonder why the Jigsaw doesn't have any variegation on it? Or does it and I can't tell?
I can't hardly wait until my MicroTom sprouts! :goteam:
How are your little baby Sundews doing?
And the plants you took out, the Basils (especially the Violetta), and Thumbelina? You will still have to let me know - I mean I have been there since they were born!

Baby sundews are doing well, but just small and boring! :ha: I'll show them soon. They're only a little bigger.
I wouldn't count on any shots from my girlfriend. In fact half the stuff I give her she forgets to water and it dies. I like giving stuff to my other girlfriend who has more of a greenthumb. I've known them both since we were kids.
So yeah, the basil I gave to my mom, after I got them to adjust to soil. The old zinnia is gone...also with my girlfriend. It adjusted to soil really fast and I'll be seeing it this weekend.
Sometimes plants don't show their variegated leaves until they're a bit older. My Fish seedling is the same. You'll be getting that variety too JaNan, in the next mailings. ;)
I'm really pleased with that marble plant. It's totally thriving. I keep the lights low and I feed more often them they suggest, so this could be why. I use epsom salts and eggshells too.

Oh I know it's one plant, I was there when it was born too! :ha:
Well you will just have to take pictures of them when you go to visit them! I know you can take pictures over at your Mom's! :)
OK I wont fret till it's older then. I just always worry because I have heard those "won't come true from seed" comments. And I have no idea.
How do use eggshells? I know you mentioned Tums. I can see the Tums and Epsom salts would melt in the water, but the eggshell won't. So do tell, do tell! I want mine to look good like yours so give me the tricks of the trade!!!! Your holding out on me! :o
The Hollyberry Lady
04-12-2011, 11:42 PM
Ok but just don't count on the pics of my girlfriend's plants because they honestly could be dead within the week! :ha:
Yes, I knew you believed me about the marble being one plant, but I wanted to show you the branching out that it's doing. It's growing everywhere! :goteam:
You mean the Jigsaw might not be true from seed? Who said this?
I decided against the tums and changed the water the same day I added them. I was worried it might harm the pump or clog the system. I went back to eggshells for a calcium source. Eggshells are great for slow-release calcium to the plants. In water I believe they might be a little quicker releasing. I keep the same ones in there for at least a month before adding some new ones.
I'm not holding out on you, but I'm afraid to tell you to use more nutrients because you could kill your plants. I just push the limits and seem to get lucky, but I also have a lot of experience with fertilizing and know how far I can go. I've been switching back and forth between DNF and the A-G nutrients, to make sure the plants are getting everything they need.
Eggshells are great in the garden too, by the way. ;)
Hope this explains what I've been doing. I change my water and add more nutrients each week, instead of every two. I like the water to be fresh because the plants grow faster and better.

All the stuff you're growing will grow very quickly, so no worries. Things take off and get going so fast in the A-G I find.

These are the petunias, you can see their teeny tiny little cotyledon leaves now:

Mixed cornflower with another swelling:

I did see your Winterberry and love the redness of the new leaves! I think the Winterberry seeds I have are swelling and a couple have grow tails - nothing from the Little Blue yet but it has changed color:

The French Vanilla are already getting their second set of leaves:
http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/n580/JaNan16/20110417014.jpg
I took the larger peppers out of the AG this morning, put them in soil, and started a few more of your seeds. The Beautyberry, Royal Red lettuce, Masquerade Pepper, and Rainbow Chard.
These are so pretty:

The Royal Empress is so cute! It looks so healthy and happy. These plants we grow in our systems must think they're in plant heaven when they emerge from their shells! :ha:
Those marigolds will grow quickly and if you keep them together, you'll have to rip apart the sponge to separate them! Now is the time to decide...are you growing one in the A-G JaNan...or both elsewhere? If one is staying in the A-G, take the second one out right away. Then you don't have to worry about ripping any roots, nor hardening the seedling off.
I just don't want your stuff to die on you so that's why I mention it. It'll be easier for you if you take them out while they're young.
Just leave the purple basil (gorgeous by the way ;)) where it all is to grow together in one pod. Some plants will be much bigger than the others that will lag behind at the base of the bigger ones. It'll still be pretty though and basil isn't something you have to be too fussy about anyway. When I grow it in pots I stuff it full with many plants.
So glad you saw the winterberry red leaf shots today. It's the cold that makes them that way so our ones in our aero-garden will likely be green until they feel the cold in the Fall. They are self-fertile like pepper & tomato plants and do not require pollination to get berries. You will love this tiny shrublet. It's slow growing and only reaches 4 feet wide when mature. It's ideal for pots and even hanging baskets because it trails and creeps down the pot! :D
An amazing plant and it's one of my most favorites, next to Holly. It's so much LIKE Holly though and l think that's why I love it. Plus the fact that it's the authentic wintergreen plant and the berries smell like wintergreen and so do the leaves. It's so cheerful and happy looking in the wintertime.
If you wanna enjoy it in a pot indoors over winter, it likes a cool windowsill, or to even be put back outside for a couple days each week to satisfy it. It's an evergreen and it likes to be cold but it grows nicely through the warmer months too and sets its berries for fall and winter display. It prefers acidic soil to thrive. Any food for Rhododendron works well.
Ok I'll stop rambling but I just love that shrublet and so glad you now have it too JaNan. :goteam:
Oh yeah and your Petunia sprouts are adorable. Again, remember that just one of those seeds will grow into a huge branching Petunia plant so you may wanna thin them in a week or so. They grow fast as well so you don't want to wait until the roots go too deep.
Gonna post another shot in a minute here...
Oh and I had to re-sow a blue cornflower seed because I killed my other seedling by accident while trying to poke it into place with a toothpick. I snapped off the head!
No biggie, I sowed another seed last night.

Yes, I do think they are in plant heaven! :ha:
OK, now the French Vanilla is a large marigold right? I was going to let the seedlings get good and strong and then plant them, because I thought they would be too big to stay in the AG. The petite marigolds, I was going to leave in the AG, because they only get 6 inches tall. I thought it would be pretty with different colors, so I would have to have more than one plant. Same with the little petunias. I wanted a riot of color! So, the pods really can't accommodate more than one plant at a time? I could put them into a seed starting dome, but I can't just throw them away.
I don't mind planting the sponge with the plants. I had to do that with the peppers this morning. By the time I separated the roots the sponge would be all torn up anyway. I'll just get more sponges for the new seeds. :)
You would be proud of me though! Yesterday I actually pinched off the new precious little leaves coming out the top of the chocolate mint so they would get bushier! YAY! :goteam: It was tough though! Then I ate them! :ha: I had chocolaty minty fresh breath all morning! They weren't big enough to make a cup of tea. ~J

Oh I'm so glad you have chocolate mint JaNan...that is going to be one special treat. Mint grows quickly and before you know it you'll be overrun! :ha: I used to love to harvest my new mint shoots every couple of weeks to dry the bundles for tea. I can't wait to get some of that from you later. :D
Oh yeah, this is about aero-garden! :ha: Sorry about that but you got me excited with talk about that chocolate mint. I could rave on forever. Does it smell delicious? Oh that is too cool. :08: Great that you pinched it to make it bushy.
So yeah, the vanilla marigolds grow big but still perfect & ideal for pots so you can keep them out of the rain. The blooms are so big and heavy that rain will beat them down. A sheltered area or a pot is best for them. They are so breathtakingly beautiful when they start to really get going and there's more than 10 blooms on the plant at once. I love growing Aurora hot peppers around their base to make things more interesting. An equivalent would be your Marble pepper JaNan. ;)
You can grow more than one plant in a pod but keep this in mind...
It's like trying to stuff too many plants into one pot...there's only so much room. If one pod has 4 or 5 plants in it also, it will be hogging the nutrients from the rest of the plants in other pods due to the giant mass root system overtaking everything else in the basin below.
If you want all the colors, you should grow one in each pod to get the best growth and bloom. If you want plants that are competing and struggling to get food, where the dominant plant will outgrow the other...this is what could happen from growing too many plants in one pod.
At best, I'd suggest growing no more than 2 plants in one pod if you must...I'm doing that with the blue cornflower and dwarf zinnia in one pod.
However JaNan, it's your aero-garden and you have a right to experiment. I just want you to have success and not disappointment that's all, but the very best gardening advice I ever got was...
"Stop Listening to Other Gardeners"!!! :ha:
So do your thing JaNan, and you'll learn from the best teachers of all...trial & error. ;)

I think the red lettuce and the hot pink chard would look good growing together, don't you?
I love that the JigSaw is getting color! It should keep getting more and more as it grows for you. You just wait and see, you are going to love it as much as Little Blue and Marbles!!!! :)

My Tennessee Cheese pepper isn't doing anything either JaNan, but I'm not going to give up just yet. The "little blue" seeds are very fresh and so they should all sprout...although you may have the odd dud. Some seeds are weird too...
Ever sowed a bunch of something, and all the seeds come up, but then a couple months later one sprouts out of nowhere?! Some seeds are just fussy. Throw that one in soil in a couple days if it still does nothing, and pop another into the aero-garden that's not in a stupor! :ha:
Be sure your water basin is full. Since my plants are bigger, they suck up a lot of the water and I was shocked on Sunday when I went to change the basin and it was half empty!!!
I'm thinking that's why the Tennessee Cheese didn't come up because the sponge wasn't as moist with the water level so low! :(
I'll have to be sure to check it more regularily.
I'll get a shot of my biggest marble pepper in a few minutes to show you...

Your french vanilla marigolds look great!
Petunias are so cute and adorable.
The Chard is so bright and cheerful looking!!! :D I forget...are you leaving a chard to grow in the A-G? Omg it would be gorgeous!
My stuff is slow growing because it was all started at different times. I may have to prune off some of the pepper leaves to prevent shading of my other seedlings until they catch up. Things aren't too bad but I think my tomato plant could use more light and it's lost some leaves. Tomato plants can lose leaves though and regrow many more, so I'm not worried.
I'm going to transfer another alpine strawberry seedling into my system next week.
Thanks for the shots JaNan. ;)

Oh Boy! I can't wait to see another little baby hands growing in your AG! :goteam: Yes, I am going to leave one hot pink chard in the AG to grow. It looks like they are all pink so far, but that's OK because I think the pink is the most beautiful! I am not going to move them though until the roots have some good stout growth on them. The bell pepper that I transferred is doing well so I will let them get at least that big before moving. I have 125 new sponges ordered so I will just plant sponge and all.
Yes, I am going to try the rooting experiment again with another piece of tomato, and maybe a couple of shrubs! I have some gorgeous bushes that I want to share with you, and I would like to send them rooted. But I will send cuttings on to you if it doesn't work for me (because I know you will be able to get them to root anyway). :ha:
Thanks for all your beautiful shots! How long are you going to leave the peppers in the AG? They may be able to stay there forever if they don't die back from weather. I wonder what is the lifespan of a pepper in the AG do you know? Or any plants for that matter. If you tend to them, and deadhead and such? Have you read any info on that? ~J
The Hollyberry Lady

Peppers are perennial and will live on for years, but I like planting them from seed because I find them to be not as vigorous when they get too old. They have to be trimmed back after awhile too, when the branches get really woody.
Beth had a pepper plant that was 7 years old, still producing fruit!
In the A-G, I could see pepper plants being happy forever! :ha: If I get bored, I will just grow something else.
Yup, soon you'll be seeing another little 'baby hands' in the A-G again.
Gosh JaNan, I hate to say this but I really can't take many plants right now because I'm moving soon and I won't be doing much outdoor gardening this season because I'll be too busy. Likely none at all.
Only small stuff that can grow in the windows will be what I can handle until I move and see where I'm going. We'll discuss it later but mostly just succulents and small stuff would be best, and not too much because Bob is mailing to me soon too, and it's already a jungle in here. :ha:

Hey, I've been wanting to ask you - I don't like the "green algae" layer that seems to form on the top of all the sponges. Is there a way to get rid of this other than bleach that will kill the plants? It shows up really well on the whitish gray sponges but can see it on the brown ones too. ~J

The peppers on the little blue plant will begin as a dark purple/blue, then ripen to red when they mature. They're kind of round and oval shaped...and ripping hot. Although my mom loves the plant too and has grown it a couple times, she admits the fruits are a bit too hot for her.
Not for me though. ;)
Although this shot is not my own, here's exactly how the fruits look. This is a 'little blue' hot pepper plant...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/littleblue.jpg
Nice, eh JaNan?! :D
Yeah about the algae...I don't know what to do about it because there's plants in the pods, so I just live with it. It's not like we can use bleach while plants are in there. Once the plant gets big enough though, you don't see much of the pod anyway. It's just normal to have algae, because things are constantly wet, plus with the strong bright light...it makes for a perfect algae combination.
I just scape it off or tear part of the sponge away and wipe the rest that I can. I wouldn't worry about it too much JaNan, although I know it can be unsightly. :(
Our plants and their growth are what count most though, so I'll forgive your ugly green algae, if you'll forgive mine...deal? ;)

Wow things are looking super for you, JaNan! It's amazing how fast stuff grows!
It's good that you're separating plants and leaving only one plant in each pod. You'll find the growth will be faster & better. ;)
The Chard and the marigolds will grow really quickly. You can harvest the outer leaves of the chard but leave the center intact to keep producing a continuous supply of leaves. :D
Your Micro-Tom is looking terrific! As you know, I gave my M-T to one of my girlfriends but have sown another seed...although it's not up yet!
I might have to rely on you JaNan, to save us more seeds from your fruits, since you will be the first to have them. ;)
My strawberry seedling isn't ready to be transferred into the aero-garden for a few days yet, but I can't wait to get another one in there soon.
I don't know if I'll ever have as many A-G's as you JaNan, but maybe two more in the end. I'm gonna wait until I move. Do you think it will be tough to keep up with so many units? What about replacing the bulbs...won't it be really expensive? To me it's worth it, but others may feel differently.
Yeah I can't believe how many buds and blossoms are on the 'little blue' plant. The pic doesn't even show the half of them! I've never seen anything like it before!
Today is the day I change my water and nutrients...

Sherry how do you save your seeds? Do you go through the "fermenting stage" or do you do it differently? I just gathered some seeds from the Trailing Tom red. And since all the golds sprouted before fermenting for me I am not sure what happened there. I also have the trailing Tiger - a striped oval shaped cherry tomato.
http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/n580/JaNan16/20110417057.jpg
http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/n580/JaNan16/20110417059.jpg
I think all the trailing tomatoes are good for the AGs because they naturally hang down without training and are small plants. I would be more than happy to save the seeds for you if I can do it correctly. And I will save you seeds of any of the tomatoes I have now if you want them.
Well I just ordered two bulbs for $19.95 from the AG website (which I just received yesterday - along with 125 grow sponges and 50 baskets). I am going to probably spend that each month to keep fresh bulbs on hand. For me it is relative, I get fresh tomatoes and veggies in our triple digit summers and through the winter. I would be spending probably $5 a week on tomatoes anyway at the grocery store. I have a "Replace Grow Lights" on the pro 100 machines and none have lit up yet. I don't really know when the prior owners changed bulbs and will rely on that to tell me. I can judge since the first one was a new one, but all the others I bought off Craigslist and only remembered to ask the last guy when he changed the bulbs. He said he changed them every 6 months which is what is recommended by AeroGrow. I have both those by big mirrors and have mylar behind the others for an extra boost.
Right now, I am really enjoying the time I mess with the AG's. If it becomes too much, I can always resell them. The way you love puttering with your plants I don't think you would ever consider it a burden. They are really so carefree also, that I really just do stuff with them to be doing it. I certainly don't regret getting mine at all! I just changed water and nutrients in two of mine yesterday! :ha: ~J

Whoever told you they needed fermenting?!
You can just collect the seeds from a fully ripened tomato and smear them onto a paper towel and allow to dry for about a week. Then when you're ready to sow the seeds, you just tear a piece of the towel off and bury it in the dirt...the seed on it will sprout. This is the way I save them when it's just me using them.
However when I'm saving them for others and want them to be loose and clean, I just use a paper towel to pinch the seeds in, and remove the slime off them. Time consuming, but it's something I actually enjoy.
Yes, I like the way you described things as being pretty much maintenance free in the A-G and that you just putter around with them just because it's fun...me too. :D
I think it's great that you have it planned out, how you can keep fresh bulbs onhand but not have to put out a lot of cash at once. I think you'll have a great time with them all JaNan, and good thinking about selling them again if it becomes too much for you.
Yes, I would love some seeds from the trailing tomatoes! :goteam:

Sherry I got that information off the internet. Every one that I clicked into said the same thing, that fermentaton had to happen, yada, yada, yada!

Anyway, this method did not work for me. So I will try your method. For some reason I think I saved some tomato seeds years ago and never went through the fermenting stage, but just cleaned them the best I could and they did fine. So I am going to try your method Sherry, it sounds easy enough to do and I know you have had success with it!

I gotta tell ya JaNan, a lot of so-called information on the internet, is frankly just a big walloping bunch of crap!!! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo2.gif
Members post links all the time for sites with inaccurate information.
It's obsurd to suggest that tomato seeds 'require' fermenting! :ha: There are some serious wild imaginations out there...and it spreads!
As long as the fruit is fully red and ripe, to ensure the seeds inside are completely developed, they are ready to be collected and dried. It's a simple as that, and anyone who tells you differently is giving you a load of you know what!
Yes, I have seeds that can't make it out of their little shells without my help from time to time, so I use a mist bottle to soften the coat further, or just try gently pulling it off. It happens, so no worries.
Love it that you have a marble growing now too! Plus that Osmin basil is going to be so pretty for you. It tastes great too. ;)
I'm gonna take a few more shots of nothing you haven't seen before JaNan, but you've just got me so darn excited! I also have, I dare say, a little problem going on with my marble plant!
Not really a problem, but more of a mystery. I'll let you know more shortly, after I take some shots and load them for my next post...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC04241.jpg
It's beginning to grow new branches and develop lots of buds. :D
I noticed another 'little blue' pepper tonight too...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC04209-1.jpg
There's a couple more but they're too small to see yet.
Here's the thing about my "marble" plant though...
It's not setting fruit!
The blossoms are dropping, leaving no fruit behind. I've tapped the blossoms and shaken the plant to ensure the spread of the pollen but they keep dropping. I will figure this out yet...
The 'little blue' is not having this trouble and it's setting fruits all over the place! It could be the marble plant is extra sensitive and so tonight I didn't change the water like I normally do on Sunday, so as not to disturb the roots until some fruits set. I'm doing my best to help things along.
The first 'marble' fruit I ever got was from the first single lone blossom that obviously pollinated itself. There's still so many blossoms on the plant that I'm not going to worry about it. No doubt, more fruit will appear soon. It's normal sometimes for the first blossoms to drop with no fruit.
We'll see...

So I'm assuming the aero-garden makes everything grow like 5X faster than it would in soil. Is it better than any other kind of hydroponic system?
I am thinking about getting one because I want to try stuff like bananas, gunneras, or even bamboos in there to see if I can get them to grow super fast, and perhaps be kind of like a cloning machine.
Jananas Bananas

It's supposed to and I have to say MOST things I have tried it is true. I have many seeds in several machines that I also started at the same time in peat and nothing yet for some in the peat starter.
But I have had two banana seeds in there since the day I started the first one up and don't have any sprouts yet with them. I put three more banana seeds in there last week just to see if I had any other results.
I don't know about other hydroponic systems, so can't help there.

This is a surprise - I had all but given up on this pod, so much so that I don't have the label I made for it. I put a couple of seeds in this one the first day. The pod besides the yukky algae, also has cinnamon on it. Anyway, low and behold I have a pretty little dark purple stemmed seedling, that has already shed it's seed coat, standing up tall this morning. If you look closely, it also has a lot of purple on the underside of the cotyledon leaves. :woohoonaner: I am thinking a pepper, but at this point I am not sure! What do you think Sherry? It was before I got your seeds. I guess I need to go back through this thread and see if I recognize anything that may look like this starting out. I hope it is a JigSaw! :)

They're just tiny nubs yet though, so I'll take shots when they develop more. I think the plant was just waiting for the main flush of blooms before putting on it's main crop. Yeah it was a pepper she grew that went through a shade of true blue, even though some people on the hot pepper forum argued with me that it was impossible and that it must have just been a child's wild imagination!
I know what I saw and I just wish I knew where she got it from. She knew some very old gardeners. That's why I love Filius Blue...because it's the next best thing to actual bluish peppers. I'm getting the seeds soon. :D
Fish pepper is an African Heirloom hot pepper and it's like no other. The fruits are medium to mild hot and they're just perfect and recommended for salsa. The fact that even the fruits are variegated, sets it apart from many others. It's the perfect pepper for you to enjoy eating, JaNan. :goteam:

I wasn't as into gardening back then because I was a child, and I didn't ask her anything about them...I just played with the little fruits and loved them because they were blue. She grew this variety for years.

Just wondering. What would happen if you poured some aerated worm tea into the AG?
Would it help the same way it does with regular plants and end up giving them a double boost?
Aerated worm tea seems to be a pretty cool way to bulk up some of my vegetables, but combining its effect with the AG might have some pretty cool results. I'm also going to experiment with the wall o water to hopefully get some plants even more accelerated growth outside. To top that off I have a plant steroid that I tried out on my hot peppers and I think either that or the aerated worm tea is causing them to branch like crazy and grow super bushy. Anyways just for kicks here's a picture of one of my bhut jolokia hot peppers. They are starting to crowd each other out in the seed rack since they grow so densely.

If it was strained really well it would probably work well. Stuff gets in through the filters and will clog up the pump. I know I have taken apart and cleaned 5 of them now. Don't take my word for it though, because I'm no expert! Sherry can probably give you some good advice on that.

My pepper plants in the A-G are branching out incredibly too, Steve. It's a combination of good nutrients and good light that makes pepper plants branch and become more dense. :08:
I would do some research on hydroponic gardening and adding worm tea, because I'm no expert on that. I think it'll likely be cool but I'd suggest you ask some folks on the aero-garden site that would know about that better than I would. I'm just new to hydroponic growing still.
I know I like to push the limits though and add things to my water basin that others might not. I decided to take it easy though now, since the plants are growing 'publically' and you guys would be disappointed if I killed them all, doing one my little experiments. :ha: I'm usually lucky though.

I have a royal empress tree that I cut to the ground annually, but the biggest problem with this tree species is that it causes a huge aphid infestation, every year so I don't want it to get that big. Cutting it back to the ground every year will let it keep those 2-3ft diameter leaves that it's known for, and it will still grow over 10ft tall each time it rises. Royal empress trees also propagate really easily because I've taken 3 inch pieces of roots and gotten trees to form from them which will grow as fast as sunflowers.
Another idea with the aero-garden is that it can be used to quickly root blue-berry cuttings especially since you can stick like 20 twigs into each sponge. I have about 50 blueberry plants of varying ages, some at fruiting age so I can probably use the aero-garden to speed up the process. It works by using juicy-roots cloning gel, however it still takes up to a month to get cuttings to root for me.

I think I have a pretty good idea. Has anyone with the aero gardens tried sticking a piece of banana corm, or a corm from EE, or gunnera in these things to see if they make sprouts?
I think it would probably work since plants with corms generally have the capability to micro-propagate very easily. I ordered an aero-garden a few days ago, and the first thing I'll try to root is some blue-berry branches, stick a bamboo seedling to try out, perhaps stick a tree peony branch in there, lilium, or whatever I want to multiply. It will definitely be fun because once something does root, it should really take off quickly in the AG.

I have 5 banana seeds in my AGs but they haven't done anything yet. And I have had two of those seeds in there since day one. They have swollen and LOOKED like they were doing something but nothing yet. I have not tried a corm but it is an idea. You are limited by size when you are cloning or rooting. ~J

Yup, your strawberry plants will have the 'baby hands' leaves as well, JaNan. :D
Don't be surprised if the one with the broken neck doesn't make it, but you have 2 more so no worries. Are you going to grow one of them in the A-G or are you just germinating them for somewhere else?
I'm glad some more marbles are setting now too. I'll show that big one tonight that was the very first fruit on the whole plant. It's turning this beautiful mauvey/white color, but yellow will soon follow...

I took that loooong one off that sponge and split a new sponge and tucked that tail down in there like I did with the chard and pepper seedling and it is now in the AG. Maybe it will make it also. I'll take new pictures in the morning and see how it does. I am always surprised by the growth overnight when I am asleep and the lights on the AGs are off. Maybe because I am looking at them all day! :ha:
That first pepper sure is pretty! What size is it now? Mine varied, but most were just a little larger than a green English pea. None were actually the size of marbles. :)

The marble is about the size you described, but I think the fruits would be a bit bigger if grown outside. I sure think they're so cute and can't wait to taste one when it turns completely red. What an adorable little plant that is.
My 'little blue' plant is setting peppers everywhere. You're really going to enjoy that plant, JaNan. The fruits are kind of two lobed, with an indent in the middle of them that becomes more pronounced as they grow and ripen. You'll enjoy all the rich purple color of them before they turn red.
Soon, I'll be collecting seeds from inside the fruits, but they have to be mature and ripe, for them to be any good.

I just got my aero-garden in the mail today, and got it started. I planted a small phyllostachys kwangsiensis bamboo seedling in there, a couple gunnera corm cuttings, blueberry cuttings, angel wing begonia cutting, a bhut jolokia seedling and tree peony in there.
After a few hours of having the stuff in there, the good news is, there's no transplant shock which usually occurs whenever I re-pot stuff so that means they are off to a good start. Now the cool part is that it's easy to check for any rooting, and that's what I'll be looking for. Once I have some of these plants well rooted, and grown out a bit, I'll probably be replacing them with more plants.
Pictures will be coming once I get some results.

I would suggest planting the empress tree up into the biggest pot you can find because this plant will grow exponentially and it will fill up the aero-garden with roots to choke out the other plants once it gets a little bigger. I've taken root divisions off mine so I've seen their explosive growth rate. They do however slow down once they get to a certain size.
Jananas Bananas
05-05-2011, 08:28 PM
I would like to plant it in the ground Steve, but I will probably have to pot it first. I love planting trees and they are a premium in this part of the country so I welcome the fast growth rate. It is, in fact the reason I chose this tree. I hope I can get it established and have it flourish here.
Thanks for the advice! :) I plan on taking it and my passiflora out of the AG tomorrow!

I'll hold off my pictures until I'm sure I know what grows in the aerogarden. So far blueberry cuttings, and begonia cuttings seem to be failing, however the kwangsiensis seedling, ghost pepper and gunnera look like they might do something after 2 days in the AG. I know it takes plants several days to get situated into a new environment. I'm guessing once roots take hold, growth should be accelerated.
The one thing I'm finding is if I have the lights on, the water temperature can soar up to 96F after a while so I don't leave them on too long at any given time.

Are you changing the water and adding nutrients each week or every two weeks, JaNan? Not to worry about the burn marks but it's good you've raised the lights. Check often too, to make sure the water level is topped up because now that your plants are bigger, they'll suck it up faster.

Not to worry JaNan, the micro-tom can handle the fruits, but in a pot it sometimes requires staking. In the aero-garden, it can still be kept upright by tying the little stake to the plastic pod to hold it in place.
So cool that your Fish seed is sprouting. You are gonna love that plant so much. It's just gorgeous!
I'm not sure what's going on, but my Aloe Polyphylla seeds might not like the aero-garden after all!
It's a succulent, and I wondered if the water might make it rot. I can't tell yet but the base of the one seedling doesn't look quite right to me and it could be the onset of rot!
We'll see though, and I'll let you guys know what happens. I have a feeling though, they would just prefer to grow in soil and not a wet aero-garden. Trial and error, teaches us
best. ;)

You know Sherry I was wondering about that. If they could handle all the water from the AG it would probably grow very fast, but I am thinking they would like the well draining cactus soil better. Most aloes are slow growers, but I don't know the growth habits of that kind.

You can harvest the outer leaves soon and leave the center to continue to produce new leaves. Mmmmmm...tasty. :D
I have triple Datura seeds too, but haven't grown them just yet. ;) I think I got them from Beth.
The Phlox will be gorgeous! Are you keeping all this stuff growing in the A-G? Oh it will be so pretty, JaNan.
So cool that you have a Lycium Barbarum sprout (Goji Berry ;)) Hope you saw the information I posted for you in the "what'cha got sprouting" thread about them. You'll find it helpful I'm sure. :)
Now are you fertilizing regularily, JaNan? Just curious about how often...once every two weeks, or once a week?
Everything looks great. I'm just dying for some of these to turn red so I can eat 'em...

Here's some results from my aero-garden. Some things obviously don't grow, but the things that do such as bamboo (P kwangsiensis seedlings) and peppers seem to thrive so here's how it went. It seems like while they are establishing growth doesn't happen that fast, but the last couple days, the peppers have noticeable accelerated in growth.

I was a bit skeptical about the performance at first, but today, the peppers have gotten a lot bigger, and it looks like once they get going in there, they really take off. I purposely used weaker seedlings to see how they would react and I think in another week, they'll surpass the strongest ones outdoors, maybe not beat the ones with the wall o waters around them since those are growing fast too.
You really have to know what grows well in a warm controlled environment setting, and I think vegetables generally excel in there. Yesterday I planted some vegetable seeds just for testing, and they germinated in 1 day, so it's definitely a good seed starter. I ordered some gunnera tinctoria seeds to try out how it works.

Steve what is that thick reddish purple plant in the front right in the May 5 shot and also the reddish and green leaf behind it on the right also?
I have started some seeds that really didn't like the extra moisture or the warmth. All you can do is experiment, right? Peppers do seem to really love it, that's for sure.

It was a tree peony and blueberry branch cutting that I was trying to root, but those were un-successful so I've been trying different things as cells open up.
The cool part about peppers is that I can keep them growing all season long if I wanted to so I could be picking hot peppers over the winter time.

The aero-garden is starting to really sow its true colors now as my trinidad scorpion is twice as big as it was in the last picture, and what's more impressive is that the roots are growing out, way more than they probably would in soil. I think all the peppers in the aero-garden will soon pass up the ones in the garden with ease.
After eating an asian pear, I took the seeds, and put them down in my aerogarden with the other plants to see if they germinate. If they do, I'll simply pot them up so they don't compete in the same cell with the other plants.

Okay, these things are neat and I am glad to see other people trying them. However, I cannot read 13 pages of the thread so just tell me if this has already been mentioned: The air-stone(s) need to be replaces often because the nutrients block the little holes and after a month or two, you end up with just one bubble coming out of the hole every second, which is basically useless. Also, as the plants get bigger, the water level gets lower much more quickly. I realized this after my plants started to wilt last November because I was not used to having to check the water level on a daily basis! lol. Also, the more water they absorb, the more nutrients they will need to support a larger plant. I would almost advise looking into adding a packet more often than every 2 weeks. Just a suggestion. Oh, and why should the bulbs be replaced every 6 months? I know it says to in the manual, but I never did and my plants grew fine... I think it's just so they make more money.
Here's a picture of my lavender. They did very well all winter until I ran out of nutrients and was BROKE so I couldn't afford to buy more at the time. :)

Wishing for continued successes with the Aerogardens, everyone!

Also, air-stones can be found at any pet store in the aquatic section for less than a dollar... so I wouldn't buy them from the AeroGrow website if you want to save money. I think that's all I was going to say, but I forgot. :/

Hi Taylor, thanks for your posts! Only the three pod units have the air stones. The 6 and 7 pod units have a pump and filter system. Thanks for the tip though, I just bought a 3 pod the other day, my ladybug.
The reason for changing the lights out every six months is because the lumens are reduced with age. Here is the direct quote from AeroGrow:
"AeroGarden grow lights are specially designed to deliver the maximum light plants can use, with the lowest possible energy use. Like most lights, the total lumen output can drop over time. We’ve found that at about 6 months, light output drops to a point that it starts to impact plant growth. Plants can start to “stretch” for the light and look a bit scrawnier than previous crops. For that reason we recommend changing grow lights every 6 months for best growth.
This is especially true for fruiting plants like tomatoes and peppers, where lower light levels can cause flowers not to set fruit. The more light you have, the more fruit you get.
Even though the light may look the same to you, your plants know the difference, and you’ll often immediately see improved growth when you change bulbs."
I can say this is true from experience. I bought a new unit in the beginning, and several used units. There is a difference in the size and speed of the growth in the baby plants. I also bought two new bulbs for one of the used units, and the same seeds grown side by side in the unit with the new bulbs were about 3 times faster than the used unit with the used bulbs. Everything will still grow it's just slower. Just depends on how fast you want your plants to grow. They sell an adapter so you can still use your older bulbs in a regular socket if you are interested.
Here are a few of mine this morning:

Wow JaNan, things are looking fan-bloodey-tastic!!!
I can't wait to see the bloom on the french vanilla marigold. The 'fish' pepper looks wonderful! I know how much you're enjoying it. I sure hope you get a little blue seed to pop soon, but I can send you more if not.

It'll be so pretty when our zinnias bloom, JaNan. They're from a color mix so I hope we each end up with different colors. They don't take long to produce their first bud and then they branch out with many more flowers everywhere. How exciting! :goteam:
Notice ours are about the same size?! They could bloom around the same time. :D

Thank you Sherry. Coming from you, that really makes me feel good! :) I think our little Thumbelina's are about the same age. ( :ha: I just re-read your post and noticed that you said this - DUH! :ha:) I am anxious to see them bloom too!
For some reason I thought the French Vanilla was a tall marigold. I thought I would be taking it out of the AG before it bloomed, so I am pretty excited about this bud. I am really impressed with the thickness of the foliage too - it's a very beautiful plant.
I am very interested in the new development in the Marble pepper. I am absolutely wild about the darkness on the leaves! The denseness of it's foliage is really beautiful too. Your plant is so much more "perfect" looking than my Mother plant was. I mean I loved it and thought it was beautiful, but hands down your plant is 10 times or better than the original!
Yes, I am really enjoying the Fish pepper. Variegates always win my heart! :)
Here's a couple more:
The Opal basil you sent me the seeds for is the tallest one in the picture. The ones on each side are the Purple basil from the AG seeds.

I can't get a decent picture of this, but this is your Rainbow Chard seed. This plant is so beautiful, just look at the color in the stem and veins!

What type is that one with the white and purple edged blossoms? It's gorgeous. Is it a mystery variety. Oh I can't wait to see the fruits! :goteam:
I'm very impressed with your stuff, JaNan. It all looks great. Those marigolds are just getting started but great it's a dwarf for now! :ha: The leaves are slightly irritated though...you'll see the difference when your potted ones surface.
I'm very pleased with the 'little blue' and the 'marble'. I've never had nicer pepper plants and am totally amazed at their beauty also. Henry is bedazzled by all the colors.

Wow, I'm so glad you got a blue spruce to sprout!!! Did you give it a cold-stratification period at all?
Looks like you'll be gobbling tomatoes soon! I've got a micro-tom in my a-g and in a pot too.
I just don't understand the little blue pot seeds being duds! As soon as our mail strike ends, I will send you more fresh seeds, so no worries.
I'm sure your little blue spruce tree will thrive, as we saw pics on that magazine cover that you showed and they love it in the a-g environment. I am so tickled that you are growing so many cool things. When I have more systems to experiment with, I intend on doing the same
thing. :D
Everything is looking great for you, and even your little strawberry plant is coming along. Plants that are the tiniest and slowest growing, often turn out to be the best of all, and well worth the wait. ;)

I had to go check mine. It has the little "claw" type leaves but no bud button yet. I can't wait to see it either! :lurk: Yours looks so perfect Sherry. Mine has a little wrinkling on a couple of the leaf edges.
Yes, I put the blue spruce seeds in the freezer door the day I received them from you. You sent quite a few of those so I put two seeds in a pod last week. So I was really surprised it came up so fast. I don't think the other seed has done anything. Especially since you said I needed to be patient with them (you know I am lacking in that department).
I love being able to start different things and they seem to do so well. I want to try some really hard things and see what they will do in it.
Yes, I am very excited about the MicroTom!!! It probably won't get shared though. I may let Greg taste the SECOND one....:ha: I will be getting seeds out of it and may try to start a group of them in a small pot. :)

Oh you must take a lovely close-up eye-candy shot of nothing but the gorgeous red stems of that swiss chard!!! :goteam:
You mean "Purple Beauty"...is that the one in the back left corner?
I think your stuff looks fantastic, JaNan! :D
How fabulous about the blue spruce seeds popping! YAY! Will you continue to grow the little guy in the A-G? Oh I hope so. I bet it will be just stunning!
The thing about your micro-tom plant...it's just getting started! It puts on a few cherries to give you a taste, and then the plant begins to grow more wide and taller, with more cherries the second crop. At least that's how it performed for me in a pot. I can't wait for you to taste one.
No worries...when your thumbelina reaches 6 inches tall, look for a bud. I just can't wait to see which colors we end up with. My plant is branching out so it will have many more buds very soon. I'm hoping it comes out as some shade of pink.
Thanks for the shots, JaNan. ;)

OK I will take some new pictures tomorrow and try to get some of the rainbow chard.
No, it's the "mystery" pepper with the whitish then purple pepper that you want some seeds from. :)
Tonight the blue spruce has a red stem on it. Very pretty! I hope it will still be that color tomorrow so you can see it. I am just to pooped to take any tonight. I'm trying to stay awake to watch a tv program and the old eyes are getting heavy!
Can you see how big that Goji is already? I have so many baby plants to be excited about! :ha:

Yes, the Goji looks great but I'm going to get you to prune it soon so it will branch out. ;)
The blue spruce should look reddish for a bit on the stem if I recall correctly. They're just the most adorable little things when they're babies...like little mini Christmas trees.
Yup, it's the mystery purple one in your a-g that I'd like seeds from. :D
Looking forward to more of your shots tomorrow...

Uh oh! My poor little Goji has to get a haircut soon! That's going to be hard to do! :ha:
OK I need to pick your brain. I have a couple of questions for you, Sherry. I know you add Epson salt to your unit and also egg shells for calcium. I was wondering how much? I'm not sure how much water your unit holds, but I usually put my stuff into a gallon container and mix it up before putting it into the units. On the ones that have big plants and lots of roots I am adding a gallon every other day. I only add a half teaspoon of Epson salts once every two weeks. But, I do put the ferts and SuperThrive in the gallon each time. I crunch up one egg shell per unit and change that every two weeks also. Is this enough or too little? I think my fert and SuperThrive seems to be working but wondering the most about the salts.
~J
The Hollyberry Lady
06-25-2011, 10:37 PM
Oh I use a couple Tablespoons of epsom salts and I keep re-using the same eggshells each week because they release calcium very slowly. I also change my water and fertilizer each week...not every two weeks. You'll notice a big difference if you do it this way. ;)
You can add lots of eggshells. I use around a 1/4 cup of them. They don't have to be crushed finely...little pieces are good enough.
I dump my basin into the bathtub and then rinse it out thoroughly. Then I add the fertilizer, epsom salts and shells to the bottom. Once it's all added, I fill it back up with the bathtub taps and let the water swish and mix everything around. Then I set it back on the base. Simple.
Not to worry about snipping your Goji...it loves it! Then you'll have many branches instead of just one tall one. I know you'll thank me later and be so pleased with how bushy it will get from a few snips here and there. If you want, you can even try to root the snippings! :D
So here's how things are tonight in my system:

OK it sounds like I need to up the salt a bit then.
Is your strawberry a trailing kind? Is it the same kind that you had before? It sure is growing fast! Your first one seemed to grow like mine is - tiny and SLOWLY!
My little Zinnia is branching too. Still no bud button though. Can you tell what color it is yet?
Is that the new little Explosive Amber to the right of the zinnia with the TV behind it? It sure is growing fast too!

Yup, that's the 'explosive amber' to the right of the zinnia. :D
Nope, it's too soon to see the color of the bud yet but it's getting bigger today. I'll show it again soon.
No, my strawberry plant is not the trailing kind. It'll be upright but short...like 6" tall. It's the exact same one as I had before but back then I was fertilizing every two weeks, and now I've switched to every week. The berries will be smaller on Alpine varieties but the flavor is much more intense and sweet than bigger types. ;)

Great shots, JaNan! :goteam:
I'm just a bit concerned about something though...in the very first shot of the chard leaves, what is that on the back of the stems? I hope it's not pests of some kind? Do you shower your a-g plants at all?
Maybe it's just pollen dust I'm seeing but I know how appealing indoor-grown edibles can be to pests of all kinds so it's good to keep them showered regularily.

So glad it turned out to be just pollen dust, JaNan. You can't be too careful when you're dealing with growing edibles inside. Did you see that one lady's pepper plant on the a-g site? It was completely stripped bare of leaves, because mites had taken over!
Great that you shower your a-g plants too, JaNan. It's an excellent practice and one that I strongly recommend. Besides just pests, it's nice to keep the plants clean and fresh...and dust-free.
