Here in Missouri we are having another terrible winter. Right now we have snow again. The last batch had just melted. We have 9 inches and expecting 4-7 more on Sunday. Temps have been below zero with wind chills of minus 10*F to minus 20*F. At least snow insulates. I have 3 musa basjoos under 2 foot of mulch in big tomato cages. I hope they make it again this winter.

Vickie,
I hope your Basjoo make it. You are worrying about your bananas freezing and here in Pensacola I'm worrying that my bananas all wrapped and burried in leaves will rot from the warm temps we experience in between freezes.
Here's to both of us!

Thanks I hope we both have them next summer.

They are not new plants one has been in the ground 4 yrs the other 3yrs and the last one 1-1/2 years. So maybe they will survive. It will get to the point as we age more that will be the only bananas we can manage. Lifting these big pots are hard on us. My Musa basjoo that is 4 yrs old had 10 pups last summer. Yikes! LOL

They should do OK. They are tough plants.

I hear you. Saturday night is supposed to be -15 without windchill. Might be a disappointing spring.

I hear you, too ... here in S. Ohio all winter we have had VERY cold temps, so snow has stayed on the ground forever. Like you, I'm just hoping that it will serve as a good insulator. This will be the 2nd winter in-ground for 2 of my basjoos and, like Dadmeister, I'm nervous about it being a disappointing spring. I also agree with Vicki ... I'm thinking I will have more and more basjoos, as the older I get, the harder it is to dig up nanners and keep taking them in and out each year.
I'm just SO tired of this. Every winter, I get a terrible case of SAD ... I am a completely solar-powered person. WHERE IS THE SUN?!?! I really need to recharge my internal batteries! :)
Best of luck to all of us over this harsh winter!

My two Basjoo's are under 6 feet of snow and have been since before the ground froze! :D It's where the plow piles all the white stuff, so there's lots of insulation. Can't wait to see what Spring will bring! :goteam:
Good luck everyone! :waving:

Sound's like it's been a tough winter on both sides of the pond.
Worst December weather for 100 years in England. Looking in the poly tunnel just depresses me. SAD and then some...
Still on the bright side the snowdrops are well up and the daffs aren't far away. The green shoots of spring are coming...honest:08:

Well we missed the last go round of snow so we only have the first 9 inches. High temp today is 40*F. I am getting ready to get out my thong. HEHEHEHE
At least the sun is out. I can go into the basement where I have 9 shop lights going and piddle with my plants and bananas and fish down here on a cloudy day.
