It's not a Butia, it's Jubaea chilensis. They have massive trunks and are extremely beautiful (the most beautiful specimens are over 75 years old!).

Yeah, but they get quite robust. It will take at least 4x4 foot square.
What do you intend to do with all those freshly harvested seeds? More to that... what do you do with those countless seeds of various varieties that sprout? Do you plant them at a public place, give away or terminate?

The interesting plants I keep. If I get one quarter of the palms to sprout I may sell them to help pay for The Money Pit and pots, perlite, soil, fert. water, heat mats, thermostats, water cans.

I'd love to try to germinate some seeds of the wine palm, but it is such a slow grower,I probably wouldn't live long enough to get one planted in the ground!!!LOL

How deep is your germinating tray, and what to you normally plant in it?
I've been using those wall paper drip trays that are 6inches x 6inches x 30 inches, and they have been working great and it can get them on the smallest tray shelf.

Yes, I guess it does look like it. I grew some before.

I'm still waiting on some of the seeds I got from you to come up. These little dips in temp are setting them back a little. It warms up to 70-80F during the day and dips back down to 40-50F at night.

Do Jubaea need bottom heat to sprout? I tried de-lidding but none of them made it.

What on earth do you do with all the seedlings you germinate?

I am grateful to see what a Butia looks like germinated so many thanks for your Image, I have two in water at the moment.

Never give the entertainment center a thought for germinating palm seeds. What a brilliant Idea...thanks!!

nannerfunboi,

Trachicarpus is quite hardy, I lost one though (young one) at -13 last winter, its just spear pulled. I would wrap in fleece.

Beautiful palms everyoneand very helpful seeing the seedlings.

You do sunfish,

Would it not be easier for you to stagger the seeds sowing?

I don't have a big enough house, my window sills can get pretty full in spring but not to that amount.

Good luck with them anyway, I think that you are brilliant at germination. I am on day one of soaking a Butia deliverd yesterday.

What do we do after soaking, do we scrape some of the outer away before sowing?

Thanks sunfish

Best thing for you sunfish,

A market garden/car boot/stall. That way at least you could sell the stock. What about selling on Ebay?

I just bought some CIDP seed ready sprouted (not been delivered yet) , I tried those for two years without sucess.

I guess spring/ summer is best time to germinate seeds. I would have bought two Butia capitata off you but thats all I would need lol (small garden) not much use to you is it when you have a mountain of seed.

I buy a great many plants, I think I am addicted lol maybe that is the same with your seeds. People get a 'high' off different things.
