OK, picked up 3 palms yesterday at Home Depot for 19.99 each- 2 Trachy fortunei and a Butia capitata. While they're not huge, for the price they have some nice trunk showing. I'm definitely planting the windmills to stay out all the time, but while I would love to have a winter hardy Butia, I don't relish starting the winter protection chores again, although at this size its not too bad.

Decided to plant the 2 above trachys I just bought next to the front sidewalk. I'll have to add one or two more. My question, probably answered before but I don't remember- do deer (white tail) eat palms? They haven't touched my banana (basjoo clump), so I'm hoping for good luck.
edit- Great looking queen palm, Andreas. Also love the Dactylifera, Ante. How tall is it?

How cold does it get there in Maryland? For where you are, that is. Pindo's are quite cold hardy, able to take temperatures into the low teens and single digits for a short amount of time. Although not quite as hardy as a Windmill, they're quite tough. The only thing that's ever killed any I've dealt with are the stupid Rhinoceros beetles.
Wow. I almost type beatles.

I've tried butia before in a normal winter here, with protection, and it died. So I'm staying with needles, trachys and sabals for leaving out for the winter. I hate to sacrifice another butia.

I'm attempting to germinate some hearty palm species. I found a sabal minor in one of my bags with a lot of roots starting but no sprout yet. I transplanted it into its new home about a week ago or more and still no sprout. I'm worried it got all twisted up up or something. I didn't plant it very deep. How long do they usually take to come up like this? Is mine a goner?

I've got about 90% germ on these in the first week, 4 days soak, 4 days in soil. I also have many other types Im trying to germ. My soil mix is very light and on the drier side, but I did not sterilize it and now I see some mould starting on several varieties. Definately should have sterilized my soil because it has mycorrhizae but I was too lazy. Since I know rot is the biggest issue when germinating palms, can I safe these seeds, can I sterilize them again and start again in some sterilized soil? How should I go about doing this?

Hi, I'm loving all the pics and good info on how to germinate palm seeds on this thread. Does anyone know how long jelly palm and sago palm seeds are viable for? I have a bunch I brought from my other house when I moved 3 yrs ago. I forgot that I still had them lol. Are they still okay to plant?

If they sink in water they may still be viable .If they float they're no good
