Some of you are probably familiar with Blue Jay birds. They like to store nuts for the winter, and if they can't find a suitable place they will just peck a hole in the ground and push them inside. Oh yes, they also forget about the seeds. So this is great for the acorns of the native oaks, but there were also palm trees in the town I grew up in. Every summer from kindergarten on it was my job to pull out the 100's of Washingtonia palm starts from our acre property. I began to look at palm trees as sources of trouble and nothing else. They were ok in a date orchard or a desert oasis. They still have no appeal to me as an ornamental plant. I like some dates and certainly my favorite fruit shake drink is date, and for that matter from Hadley's in Banning California. I've been selling the Zahidi date palm, the Pindo palm, and the Chilean Wine palm for a couple of years but never considered planting one ... until last weekend I had some dates from a customer of mine who feeds his plant appropriately. Wow. It changed my mind about that plant!

Zahidi are available here in the wholesale nursery trade. They are often planted in date orchards.
Palms do not tolerate high amounts of phosphate. Wholesale growers who raise palms for orchard sales typically feed their plants a citrus formula such as 30-10-20 or 28-8-18 until they are large enough to sell. A standard dosage is 1/4 teaspoon (1.25 cc) per gallon of water in continuous feed; i.e., the fertilizer is always in the water irrigation water to the plants.
However, date orchards and collectors of ornamental palms (including botanical gardens) do not want rapid growth. Here is the formula they use:
Major Nutrients (% by weight):
Nitrogen 18.0%, Phosphate 6.0%, Potash 18.0%
Nitrogen components: Ammoniacal 7.0%, Nitrate 11.0%.
Secondary and Micro Nutrients:
Boron 0.02%, Copper 0.05%, Iron 0.25%, Manganese 0.065%, Magnesium 1.1%, Molybdenum 0.0005%, Sulfur 1.5%, Zinc 0.05%.
Botanical gardens and palm collectors use about 0.4 lbs per plant per year. Date orchards will use 1 teaspoons (5 cc) per 5 gallons of water in continuous feed during the active growing season.

On the way to our picnic on the beach my wife spotted a Washingtonia Filifera just off PCH. I saw it too and I'm pretty sure it the right one. It's about 15 feet tall right now, and the fronds are noticeably more grey. Thick trunk, full circle on the fronds with little stringy deals. I didn't have time to stop and it was dark on the way home so next time I travel that way for fishing I'll stop and get photos.

I'm going to look closer and see if there are any old seeds still up there. I'm sure they have mow and blow gardeners so finding seeds on the lawn will prove difficult. If there any old seeds still hanging I'll wait until right after a wind storm then check the ground.
I have a palm (that was sold to me from ebay in aug.) that the seller claims to be a cold hardy windmill fan palm. I never really thought about it till today, but this looks nothing like a windmill! I'm no palm expert and the leaves are stiff but damn sure don't fan. Can anyone tell me what it might be?

Yup, its not a palm its a cycad, Cycas Revoluta, aka Sago palm . Not hardy as Windmill palm but can take some frost.
Just wanted to shed some light on my palm problem. I emailed the dude and held back on the cussing. lol I guess i'm part to blame for not catching it at the time. I know we all make mistakes and this is the second time it happened to me. The first time, i ordered some black mondo grass and didn't get the full order. I emailed the guy and he didn't believe me, but after looking into it he said he sent my order to someone else, who was very happy cause they got more then what they should have and i got less.. lol To make a long story short he made it right!...so it seems this palm guy also wants to make it right when i was ready to just write it off....awesome...Anyway it appears momoese was right and here's how it went.
Dear edspalms777,
I won a bid on what you claimed was a windmill palm on aug 06 11.
one 5ga Windmill Palm - Cold Hardy Palm Tree 3 to 4ft
Item# 260826996115 $22.50 USD 1 $22.50 USD +s&h
I didn't catch it at the the time but the fact of the matter is you sent me a sago palm. I know it's a little late to bitch, but i never gave the tree much thought till now. Don't get me wrong i like the sago (and i do know the difference) but its not what i bid on. I could of got a sago at lowes for a lot cheaper at the end of summer sale. Anyway, i assume u know the difference between the palms, so i was just wondering how/why did this happen? I'M not asking for anything cause i just forked out 40 more bucks for 2 of them, would just like for u to maybe shed some light on this.
Thank you,
Tray
Dear trayb211,
If I sent you the wrong item it was nothing more than a mistake on my part. I appologize for that I have many orders pocessing in one day and its was just human error. I will be listing more palms this spring, write to me I will gladly ship another when the weather is better. Ed

I told him, to be fair, since i have the sago he owes me nothing but if he will/can cut me a deal on a windmill i would be grateful and more than happy to pay for one. This is what he sent me but don't know yet if it includes shipping. Is this good??
I have windmills in all sizes would you lika a
5gallon container 4 ft at $59?
25 ga container 6 to 8ft at $145?
or 9 to 10ft at $250.00?
or larger?
these prices are at a 25% discount just for you!
I bought 2 off this guy at 10.00 bucks a plant and around 26in. if anybody wants to check them out on ebay. He has 10 left. With shipping i paid 36 bucks total and as of now still waiting for them to ship.

Dear trayb211,
Ok, I can write you an listing for a 25g 5ft windmill palm that is over 15 yrs old for $165.00 this willl include shipping. The tree will be sent out UPS ground I will tie back the few leaves I leave on and wrap the roots in a trash bag, wrap the whole tree in cloth and rope. I have shipped many trees this way and they always survive. We have two 15ft windmills living in NJ now and yours will survive too, promise. Is this going to work for you? ed

Can I water say once a week? let them go dry for a longer period of time?

I know of Silver Queen Palms being called Syagrus romanzoffiana var. litoralis and Syagrus litoralis. That name, Santa Catarina Syagrus, where is that from? Never seen it.
I figured it out after a horrible hard freeze in January of '010. It got down to 18F and half the queens in one yard died. The ones that had a white/gray colour to their trunk and petioles in places did not. Never even knew to look for the difference, that there was a difference.
They were more protected than the other ones that died but not enough to be the difference. 18F in the middle of the yard was still below 24F next to the house. Not THAT much of a difference.
All but one pygmy died too.

I wrote in another thread that I'm not a big fan of palms, though I have a few. In general, I don't find them all that attractive, though I like cases where they line driveways or streets, etc. I mentioned in the other thread that my dad's Mexican fan palms have got too tall and are a pain to trim at that height and the only way to shorten them is to cut them down. They are about 38 years old. At least I can spot his home from my home five miles away.

Thanks, don't ask me what they all are. I would have to go look at the tags. :ha:
Do you know how long palm seeds last? I got some left over from last year I'm thinking of planting.:2738:

Depends on specie, some lasts 2/3 months and some are valid for a few years.
No need for tags, I can see what they are:ha: Most of them are identical as mine:ha:

Any of you hot and dry folks growing Chambeyronia Macrocarpa? Always wanted one, but wonder where I can put it as it grows 25 ft.+
