It's set at 76F,I'll probably raise it to 80F'

Not sophisticated, just heat mat and thermostat.

A good friend I trade palm with gave me his old one,it has a thermostat with a fan and the heat comes from to light bulbs,I have mine set on 90*,and when the temperature falls below that, the thermostat kicks the fan and light bulbs on until it reaches the 90* again.
I just put in some date palm seeds in after eating them a week later they have germinated.
I have germinated many different types of seed in it.

I sprout seeds in my fridge too. Mostly Holly, Japanese Red Maple, & Blackberry Lily.

I've even sprouted Colorado Blue Spruce seeds after a couple months of freezer time. Holly seeds can take up to a year in the fridge before they'll germinate.

I've always had success though and never had to adjust the temperature. ;)

What kinds of seeds are you germinating and what mix are you using for the baggies (perlite or vermiculite)?

Most are palm seeds but some other trees also.

The mix is perlite and vermiculite. A good mix FOR ME is 4-1 Perlite -Vermiculite.

What will U use as heat source?

Dean W.

I was thinking of just leaving them in the sun in my greenhouse. I have a heat mat or maybe I can use a light bulb (Christmas lights)?

Just keep in mind that for the most of seeds U will need temp. arround 85-90F

Thanks, they were free so I thought I would try them. It's been a 100F during the day in there. Night time temps fluctuate with the weather.

Is that Mesquite the one you grew from seed? It has really gone to town for you! :) They are really a pretty tree - you can look across a pasture and see a sea of chartreuse green in Spring when they first leaf out. I just hate the thorns - I have stepped on several into my foot before - and had to pull one out of my horses hoof! The wood is very expensive and very beautiful even here where it grows like weeds! ~J

Since I have planted thousands of tree peony seeds/ seedlings in the ground and still have a lot of them left, I'm planning on doing some indoor germination so I can see if I can speed up the process.

Does anyone know what the best method would be in order to prevent the growth of mold which seems to be a major problem a lot of time when I germinate with a paper towel?

I have vermiculate, perlite, peat moss, seed starter mix, potting soil and worm castings available so there's a lot to choose from. I'm not sure if I should have open zip lock bags, or closed to hold in moisture, but it would be fun to start my own germination station.

Another idea is to use a garlic clove to aid other seeds in germination since it has antifungal properties as well as rooting hormones, but I've never tried it before.

I'm considering buying one of those seed sprouters. The one thing that bothers me is that they only show pictures of the plants that will germinate very easily like broccoli or alfalfa, and not any of the seeds with any degree of difficulty.

Has anyone ever tried ones of these and germinated the tougher to germinate seeds with success?

What kind of seed did you sprout? I bet it's a really great seed and it will grow super duper for you! Don't listen to anyone advising you on how to grow it, not even me. Just grow it and be happy! It will be the best plant ever!!!

I find that some seeds require almost no effort at all. For example broccoli or some varieties of legumes, or any type of vegetable can germinate within 24 hours if you soak it in a paper towel.

Some take a bit more time. For example I've been germinating asian pear seeds from a fresh fruit and all it took was a few hours of scarification, putting them in hot tap water, and letting it cool all the way down twice, then putting them in straight soil, and after 10 days, I'm starting to have saplings emerge. I believe that scarification in hot tap water should be used on any hard coated seed since it can kill off some of the deadly pathogens on the seed and quickly saturate the seed inside the shell, perhaps shocking it to wake up.

Some seeds are very difficult due to the requirement of double dormancies such as the tree peony. All that takes is making sure they are exposed to moisture and I think vermiculate is the best at holding water and making sure there is air flow, so an open cup works since it hasn't had mold in a month already. I believe that palms and bananas or most other hard to germinate seeds should work with the same concept since fungal diseases seem to be the biggest threat to a germinating seed.

Yes I can fit them in fridge. They hold the right amount of water for germination.Easier than mixing soil :0519:
