Last week was very mild here so I was able to check on some of the plants, including some of the ones I am trialing for the first time. I was happy what I saw, although we have only had I think 5 lows in the single digits at the airport, with the lowest temperature so far of 5F. And there is still all of Jan and Feb. Here is an update so far. I'll have to wait to see what happens after winter is over.
Colocasia Gigantea Thailand Giant Strain-I was most surprised by this one. The petiole is very firm and green, not frozen at all. Only problem is there could be rot below soil level. This Colcoasia is very slow to make a tuber, and when they do even very large plants have small tubers, sometimes flat ones. The ground is dry but cool.

Musa Yunnanense-This one is close to the house and was small when planted out. Not the one in the middle of the yard. I couldn't get to that one. This one has roughly 6 inches of pseudostem left. There is another next to it I didn't look for.

Colocasia Madeira-Was small in late summer. Petiole firm.

Colocasia Sangrina-Same as above. This one was growing pretty well.

Colocasia Bikini-tini -Same as above.

Musa Basjoo-I gave it extra covering this year planning for the worst. Plus I think one at least should flower this year if it makes it. None of the pseudostems are frozen yet. In years past this was not the case in early Jan, even with very similar temperaturesat this point in winter. The modified covering must be the difference this year. One pseudostem shows a very tiny mark that might indicate center rot. Not sure but I cut it down a couple inches.
