Janan, you are the best! :D

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/thankyou1.gif

I was out today but just look at what arrived from Texas! My mom got it from the postman and saved it for my return...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC00706.jpg

I must say it's one of the nicest boxes I've ever received and I am astounded to see how much you paid to send it! You are far too generous & kind Janan...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC00707.jpg

I was so happily surprised when I opened up the box full of goodies...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC00709.jpg

I nearly burst when I saw the beautiful Amythest earrings you made homemade and gave me...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC00710.jpg

Amythest is my birthstone! :goteam: They're just gorgeous Janan and thank you so much for giving them to me.

Thanks for the little chunks & pieces of Amythest also...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC00712.jpg

Your Christmas card too, is so nice...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC00714.jpg

I was shocked to see that you sent me one of those beautiful homemade clear Christmas ornaments as well, filled with goodies inside. What a beauty...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC00715.jpg

As if all this wasn't enough, you sent me tons of seeds and cuttings also...

which brings me to this next very difficult part Janan...

I regret to inform you :( that some of the cuttings were frostbitten!

Not your fault at all but the post office should have told us the box would be exposed to lengthly periods of cold. http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo2.gif

I intend on complaining to my post office and getting them to refund your 33 bucks back but unfortunately it won't save the cuttings.

: (

Obviously the post office is incorrect about things being warm when mailed express or priority post...this is what I was told. I should have known better and we should have waited until Spring to send any plant material...

However, the dragon fruit cuttings look ok :D but most of the thanksgiving cacti cuttings are limp and frostbitten, although a few pieces look alright.

I'll let you know tomorrow exactly what will be ok and what won't...

I must say though the piece of vanilla orchid cutting does not look well at all. I especially hate telling you this because I know how special it was to you. So sorry Janan.

I am tickled that all the dragon fruits cuttings look like they didn't suffer at all though but I'll tell you for sure tomorrow...

Thanks again Janan. You are so sweet and thoughtful to have put together such a nice box like that for me. I could see the time and effort you put into it. Your special care is so very much appreciated and you brightened up my day with your Christmas generosity & cheer. :)

I can use this thread to post shots of your stuff as it grows as well. I'll post more pics tomorrow and a listing of the seeds you sent.

Once again Janan, a great big...

I just made a quick reply last night in the Insomnia thread to let you know I saw your post and I promptly got ready for bed!

I am sorry about the cuttings, but especially sorry about the vanilla orchid. It the stem limp too? If not, it might pull through, though without the leaves showing you which end is up that might be hard to determine. If anyone can get them to pull through I know you can.

I took a bunch of pictures while I was out shopping yesterday. I just have to figure out what thread to post them in. (you may need to start a new thread for them! :))

Here's one then I will try and explain:

What is that, Janan?!

It's so gorgeous, whatever it is! :D

No need to be sorry...it's no one's fault but the post office. I've been in contact with them and must fill out a written complaint form. I'm trying to get them to reimburse you the money for the shipping because I think it's their fault.

Most of the succulents are ok but the thanksgiving cactus cuttings are too badly damaged. :( They are easily replaced though so we won't worry.

The vanilla orchid does not look good at all but I'm trying just for the hell of it.

The Agave looks well and might be ok...

I'll post pics soon when I see what will make it but the succulents all look really great!

Feel free to post your shots here Janan, or wherever you want. I can't wait to see them all...

Ok here are a couple of more shots:

With Red Berries
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=39380&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=39380)

With Orange Berries
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=39379&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=39379)

I have tried hunting on the internet and I think they are Hawthorn bushes. They have so many berries on them you can hardly see the leaves on them (and they do still have their leaves)! It's the only berry bush that seems to have the cherry-like stems on each one of the berries. Maybe someone can tell me for sure. Anyway, I thought you would enjoy the pictures since you are the Hollyberry Lady after all! :ha:

The bushes are planted beside each other and really contrast one another. The red is between 7 and 8 feet tall and the orange one is between 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 feet tall. They are about a mile from my house. I will ask the owner if I can gather some berries if you want to give them a shot! I have never seen bushes so filled.

Here's hoping you can pull them through Sherry! :)

Gosh those are lovely Janan! :goteam: I especially love the red one! :D

This cutting you sent looks like it will make it for me and I think it's way too cool. What's it called again, Janan? Is it a succulent?

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC00760.jpg

I just love the variegated markings on it...reminds me of a leopard. Thanks so much for sharing it with me. I'll show a shot of some more of your stuff as the day goes on. ;)

Hopefully, you're around...

Here's the start of an Agave that Janan also shared with me, called "Blue Tequila"...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC00774.jpg

Looks like it'll make it Janan! :08:

I'm told this one is very special and that it's even used to make tequila in Mexico!

I also hear that over the years it becomes very blue! :D

Thanks, Janan! ;)

Here's another couple succulent cuttings you sent me Janan, but I'm not sure what they are...

Here's the prickly pear cutting too...

Janan...I think the "Leopard Spots" mother of a thousand cutting has definitely rooted. :goteam:

Kind of a crappy nighttime shot but it's standing straight up tall now and growing...

YAY! You will have a pot full of them before you know it!

Those little ones are an echeveria hybrid called "Morning Light". I thought I put a tag in with those. I'm getting a little forgetful in my old age I guess! :( So sorry. I am usually so anal about my labeling!

~JaNan

The Hollyberry Lady
12-29-2010, 10:36 AM
The truth is Janan...you labelled everything perfectly! ;)

I just got excited when I was potting your stuff up and forgot to add the labels...then forgot which
was which! :ha:

Ok, so this one is a hybrid echeveria called "Morning Lights"...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC00867.jpg

These ones are taking off nicely for me now as well...

Ok Janan...here are the three dragon fruit cuttings that look like they'll survive...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC01012.jpg

Two died on account of the cold...one right away and the other more slowly so I didn't notice at first.

Hopefully these three will make it...

Here is a link for the dragon fruit cuttings I sent you and you can see pictures of his 3 year old plant here. For others viewing if the auction has already closed just click on "see full description" under the seller's name and you can view the pictures.

2 RED+2 WHITE+2 PURPLE DRAGON FRUIT(PITAHAYA) 3 in 1 - eBay (item 150540563141 end time Dec-29-10 21:47:25 PST) (http://cgi.ebay.com/2-RED-2-WHITE-2-PURPLE-DRAGON-FRUIT-PITAHAYA-3-1-/150540563141?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item230ceab2c5#ht_10353wt_1032)

Those are the names of yours that I had listed only by color (which is the flesh color). The skinniest one you are showing I think is the American Beauty, which is the "baby" of the group I sent you and I got that here on the org. ~J

The Hollyberry Lady
12-29-2010, 07:28 PM
Wow Janan! :goteam:

Those are way cool! I am so determined to turn my dragon fruit plants into full and dense plants like the ones shown in the pics from your link. I don't like spindly plants and always try to find a way to make them fuller.

I think the fat one in the middle of my pot you labelled as "purple" and the medium skinny one you called "pink"...but the super skinny & narrow one you didn't label, you say that's "American Beauty"?

They all sound so great and the pics are fabulous. :D

Thanks so much Janan, for sharing with me. ;)

You're so nice. :waving:

: )

Jananas Bananas
12-29-2010, 07:51 PM
Yes, that one is American Beauty. It was so narrow and I was using a fat Sharpie! I wrote it on the edge of the newspaper wrapping I think. The others were all wider and fleshier.

Do you need names of anything else I sent?

Do you know much about your Roger Meyer from Bob? I have tried to Google it and they seem to have them all mixed up. Maybe I can trade a start from Patty or Bob.

How is your "Spring/Easter" cactus doing?

The Hollyberry Lady
12-29-2010, 08:11 PM
It's doing excellent Janan and I intend on sharing it with you in Spring. ;) It''ll be a surprise to see the color of the blooms at Easter. Can't wait...

I can also share a piece of the Roger Meyer dragon fruit too...it's growing like crazy. Nope I don't know much about it but I like the chunky blockiness of the way it looks. Very cool specimen Bob sent me. :D

Ok do you have a name on these pink ones?...

Yes, that is Dorotheanthus bellidiformis "Mezoo". It will grow over the edge and be drapey. It is the one at the outside edge on the right hand side in this picture.

I love those red and pink ones and ones with lots of color. So beautiful.

Jananas Bananas

It looks a little gangly in these shots, but it will have leaves along all those stems. I left it outside a bit too long and had to pick off the leaves there, but they grow back and it will be full. :)

I'll send you some others later on. The ones I forgot and some of the new ones I swoop on here and there. And try to replace the ones that died in this last package. :(

I love sharing, especially with someone that really loves them like I can tell you do. ~J

The Hollyberry Lady
12-29-2010, 09:50 PM
No worries...I've had to remove dead leaves from my succulents also. I do love your stuff and am looking so forward to watching it all grow...

That "blue tequila" agave is now growing too! The one leaf in the center is starting to unfurl and push up! So cool.

Bob was totally tickled when I told him you sent me a "blue tequila"...he says that one is fantastic. Thank you so much for being so kind and sharing it with me.

Don't know what I did to get so lucky but I sure do appreciate it, Janan. You'll see just how much come Spring. ;)

Trying to germinate some of your Mountain Laurel seeds, Janan...after soaking them in water for 48 hours...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC01641.jpg

Hoping a couple might sprout. They are very large seeds so I filed a few of them to be sure moisture could get in, but still not damage the embryo.

We'll see...

: )

Jananas Bananas
01-20-2011, 09:32 AM
I hope they pop for you! I've got one sprout doing well the other isn't growing leaves for some reason. I've got lots of seeds though so I can always start more. ~J

The Hollyberry Lady
01-20-2011, 09:36 AM
JaNan...how did you prepare your seeds? Did you nick the red seed coat and soak them in water?

How old are these seeds? Did you collect them fresh from your shrub this past season?

Here's my "Blue Tequila" Agave baby today...

Looks really good! That leaf is really blue in the picture too! It really likes all the TLC you are giving it. They are usually very slow growing. That little guy was about 1 1/2 years old when I sent it to you! ~J

JaNan...how did you prepare your seeds? Did you nick the red seed coat and soak them in water?

: )

Yes, they are from this past year. The ones for this year haven't bloomed yet. All I do is soak them. Nicking is probably a really good idea! ~J

The Hollyberry Lady
01-20-2011, 11:26 AM
Amazing that it's a year & 1/2!!!

I can't tell you how much I appreciate you sharing it with me. Bob was so jealous when I told him! :ha:

I guess the secret's out now, and I hear that Bob is getting one from you too!So kind of you to share such a special variety with us. ;)

I was doing some research about the Mountain Laurel seeds and it said if they are hard and red, the shells could benefit from being nicked. The fact that you sprouted one without doing this, is further indication of what I mentioned in the insomnia thread last night...stop listening to other gardeners!!! :ha:

Every site I looked at said you absolutely had to nick them before sowing, but now you have proven that this is just a bunch of hogwash & baloney. Otherwise how would they sprout naturally in the wild?! ;)

About how long did your one seed take to pop, JaNan?

: )

Jananas Bananas
01-20-2011, 12:50 PM
If you have an older established bush or tree, there will be a bunch of babies coming up underneath and none of those have ever been nicked. I have tried digging up the babies, but they never make it - the tap root is just so long and deep I am never able to dig them up without doing damage to it, so I have had better luck with the seeds. I'll bet nicking them gives you a higher percentage of sprouting though. It just makes sense. Did they swell any after you soaked them? That is always my indicator that they will sprout soon after that. I think it was only about two weeks until it sprouted but it may have been a little bit longer than that.

Yes, I told Bob I would send him one. I am terrible at keeping secrets! I need to send him one of the lace agaves too, when it pups again and Howard too wants one. It's a slow pupper though, it has had only one in the two and a half years I've been here and I gave that one to Cheryl. It will have more though. I am going to be giving it some compost when the Spring rain comes. That will get it's juices flowing again. ~J

The Hollyberry Lady
01-20-2011, 12:59 PM
I really am excited to grow the Blue Tequila and am grateful to have it. I've been pampering it and giving it lots of good light...plus warmth. I intend on putting it outside in Spring and then bringing it back inside each year.

I understand about telling Bob. It was too exciting to keep it a secret. ;)

Cool about the mountain laurel! Yes, the seeds did swell up after I nicked and soaked them...plump as can be! I knew it was a good sign, from my experience with hard seeds that I've soaked before. Can't wait to see a sprout soon...

: )

Jananas Bananas
01-20-2011, 11:04 PM
No not edible. Here is a good link for Texas Mountain Laurel:

Texas Mountain Laurel -A True Texas Beauty (http://bexar-tx.tamu.edu/HomeHort/F1Column/2005%20Articles/MAR6.htm)

It talks a bit about the "Big Drunk Bean" and the value to the Indians. Thought you might get a kick out of that if you haven't found that when you did your searching. ~J

Ok, thanks JaNan! ;)

I filed three more seeds last night and put them to soak in water. This morning they are swollen and softened. I'll leave them until tonight then I'll sow them too. I've got 5 more already in soil elsewhere...

You better send me one of those Mr. Bob, if you want that "Blue Prince" to pollinate your
Princess! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo1.gif

There are exceptions to every rule. :ha:

Alright enough with the wise cracks about my so-called bonsai plants Bob! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo2.gif

I think you're just jealous, don't you? ;)

Your plants are all in back-breaking pots that you can't even move without throwing your
back out! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/clap.gif

You should be in a wheelchair by age 55, so good for you! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo1.gif

Everything is looking GREAT!!!

The variegated one is Dorotheanthus bellidiformis "Mezoo". Is that a solid green branch coming off of it, or a separate plant?

The Hollyberry Lady
03-13-2011, 10:00 PM
Yes, there's a separate branch that's solid green. It was so long today that I snapped it in half and stuck the other half into a bare spot it the pot to root! :D I really love the lush growth it produces.

Thanks, about the plants JaNan. Everything you sent is doing well. I even got one little piece of one of the Thanksgiving cactus cuttings you sent to root. There was one leaf that wasn't dead and I got it to root! I think it's a piece of the purple one but I can't be sure until it blooms in the Fall.

Maybe! :goteam:

It was kind of shrivelled looking so I wasn't sure if it would live. I didn't want to mention it and get our hopes up until I knew for sure. ;)

My GOSH Sherry! I can't believe how much that thing has grown! It really loves your TLC!

Next time you talk to Bob ask him how his is doing. I had to cut some freeze damage off his, so his wasn't as pretty as yours was to begin with. ~J

The Hollyberry Lady

I'm pretty sure it's doing well for him JaNan, but I'll ask...

I sure am enjoying mine! It's in my south window so it gets quite a bit of sunlight, which might account for the fast growth. It sure is looking terrific and enjoying the warm south light.

Thanks again JaNan, for sharing such an amazing Agave with me. This variety is very sought after and I'm sure grateful to have it. :D

They die after they bloom - but that is not an exaggeration. Yes, 50 or 60 years.

The Hollyberry Lady
06-30-2011, 10:36 PM
Ah but HbL will condense that to 20 or 30 years! :ha:

So when does it pup? Yours seems to pup like crazy!

How old is your plant? Do you bring it in every year?

My blues are about three years old and this is their first year to pup. I covered them this past winter. The others were killed by the winter - your baby is an orphan. My Momma green is probably 6 or 7. She only has one pup a year and she is old and established and weathers the winters and droughts unprotected.
