Wow both of your collections are gorgeous! Here are pictures of my Candelabra cactus. I've had it for 4 years and I've kept it inside because I'm so afraid it will be too big for my house. Its almost to the ceiling now and its still growing, but slowly. Its over 6 feet tall now. The other one is a couple of feet tall and its from a cutting.

Yup that's what it is PenJ....Euphorbia Tirucalli. :08:

Bob says he heard that in Southern California they turn more red in Winter but ours have turned green in the cool weather.

Gorgeous pictures, everyone. :03:

Here's that one you like Janan, at other times. The color fades depending on the time of year...

Thanks Cameron! I still have more to add but don't want to hog the gallery up too much so I will add them once a day. :ha:

I love the first one too though a lot of people don't. If your Aunt has some it should be easy to get some babies from her if you want some. The common name for it is Mother of Thousands! They have the most spectacular blooms on them and they last for months. So easy, too! ~J

Gonna push myself to go out in the snow today so I can pick up a dark purple-ish one for Janan and get a white one for you and I, Cam! :woohoonaner:

I think they look terrific in hanging baskets and it's a great way to keep them out of the way when they're not blooming...Janan was mentioning too. ;)

They thrive in low light, so finding a great spot for them indoors is usually not difficult.

Please show more of the blooms as they open, Cam. That yellow is so beautiful! :D

Willow87
12-02-2010, 10:42 AM
Thanks Sherry but you really dont have to do that lol. The buds are so unique, they start out pink and then they turn yellow. I think a hanging basket is a wonderful idea. I would need to get some plant hooks when I get some

The Hollyberry Lady
12-02-2010, 10:50 AM
Never because I have to Cam, but only because I want to. ;)

We are mailing to each other anyway so I'd love to include the little white cactus plant for you...then it will grow all next season too. :D It really is no trouble so please think nothing of it.

I can't wait to get that purple-ish one I saw for Janan...gonna try to pick the darkest one they have because there were a few. I'll bring the camera to the store and take some shots for you guys in the insomnia thread later...

Watch...I'll come home with like 10 new thanksgiving cacti! :ha:

A snipet or two from your pale yellow cactus and maybe your tangerine one also. :ha:

I just want to get this for you but you don't owe me anything at all, Cameron. ;)

Leaving to go get the plants soon...

The Hollyberry Lady
12-02-2010, 11:50 AM
Don't worry Cam because these plants are only little. I'll post a shot when I return...

Christmas Cactus Cuttings are very easy to package and don't even require any soil. I just use bubblewrap to wrap them a bit and then I slip them into a bubble wrap envelope to protect them further. It's very simple.

You can send me the cuttings in spring, so don't stress. ;)

Here's your new pure white Cactus, Cameron...

See, I told you it was a small plant! The bloom got a bit damaged on the way home but it was gorgeous in the store. :ha: I got one for me too but it's not quite blooming yet.

Got this one called "canival purple" Janan ( discovered today there were tags in the pots!) but I'm not sure if the shots show the true color of it...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC00462.jpg

What do you think Janan? In person there is a distinct purple-ish hue to it and the tag says it's purple. What's even better is that the lady says they're getting more in tomorrow in other shades of purple!!! Guess who'll will be there when they arrive?

Might get a deep dark purple yet, but let me know if you like this one as well, Janan. I wish you could see it in person. ;)

Although this one doesn't look like much. I found a Spring Cactus!!! :goteam: By the look of it, I think it was at the nursery since last spring! :eek:

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC00496.jpg

It needs some care but I know I can get it to grow and become healthy again. Here's an example of a spring cactus although this pic is not my own...

:goteam: A great tip that works to remove white spots off your cactus leaves!!! :goteam:

I was researching last night and it said that shining cactus leaves with mayonaise will remove the white spots...so while watching a movie last night I shined up my white spotted cactus leaves and they are now spot free and gorgeous! :D

Apparently the white spots are mineral deposits from hard water, so once you get your leaves shined with the mayonaise you can let bottles of water sit for 24 hours to allow the bad stuff to evaporate and then use it on your cactus and you'll never have white spots again! :eek:

I hate them and think they make the plant look unsightly. :(

Hope this helps because it sure helped my cactus...now glossy and shining with no white spots anywhere. It really works!

Oh I need this tip!!!! You know how my water spots up my plants!!!! How you doing?? Love, love, love that new purple one. That white succulent is wicked looking! Did it have a tag or do you know what it is?

I like the little Spring cactus too! Love that blossom. I like segmented cactus like that if you couldn't already tell! :woohoonaner: I think that is the one that is also known as Easter cactus, isn't it?

~JaNan

The Hollyberry Lady
12-02-2010, 07:57 PM
Yes, that is one great tip, Janan....and it actually works. My cactus is shining tonight with no white spots at all! :08:

The white one said it was true white and the purple one was called "carnival purple". :)

I wondered if the spring cactus is Easter cactus? They had it labelled as 'spring' though but I think it's the same thing. It'll be a nice surprise in spring to discover the color of it...

I can definitely share the purple one Janan but they said they're getting more in tomorrow so let's see what else I might be able to get also...

Those are beautiful colors! I didnt know Thanksgiving cactus came in so many colors lol. I need to try that mayo trick for my plants

The Hollyberry Lady
12-02-2010, 09:52 PM
Wow Drew....you've sure got some gorgeous beauties there!!! :eek: I love them!

Yes, definitely give that mayo trick a try, Cameron! :08:

Not only does it permanently remove the white spots but it makes the leaves glossy and shiny! My new whitish-pinky one that I bought to replace my stolen one looks like it's never been touched with hard water, ever. Good as new. :D

I just couldn't stand those spots and had to find a way to remove them permanently. My new plant had the stains on nearly every leaf! I am going to go do the new plants I got today for us soon as well.

I just put some mayo on a paper towel and then rubbed it into the towel so it was wet with the mayonaise but not gloppy...then I shined the leaves much like you would a shoe! :ha:

You can even buff them with a dry towel later too.

You'll soon see for yourselves it works...

: )

Willow87
12-02-2010, 10:02 PM
Luckily mine dont have the hard water spots which is strange because the water here has a lot of minerals in it. But the leaves still look dull so maybe i'll give them a shine lol

Thanks for the nice comments and I love that wreath idea!! I might also try to make one! Im sure it would also make a good centerpiece for a table outside in the summer if you cant find a door making it good indoors or out! You can buy them premade, but they seem to go for up to 100 dollars for live ones!!

Here's a couple of websites with instructions on how to make your own (be sure scroll down on the first link and view that brilliantly colored one - the 3rd one).
You could try this in a smaller version for candle rings or wine glass rings. And a straight version for a table centerpiece.

Hi Sherry and everyone. I wanted to post a picture of my possible success with pollinating Thanksgiving cactus seeds. I thought they were sterile until I read an article. Where the flower and the stem meets its really swollen and still green on the dead flowers. I think these got pollinated successfully. The ones I didnt pollinate where the flower and stem meet, that area is shriveled and isnt green. I think they produce a "fruit" which is the seed pod called an apple. I think the seeds are ready when the pod turns red. The first 2 pictures are the possible successful ones
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=39133&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=39133)
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=39132&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=39132)

This one is the one that may just fall off

Very cool, Cameron!!! :goteam:

I love experimenting with hand-pollination and have had success many times. I guess you'll know very soon if it worked, because the pod will either swell, or fall off! :eek:

Good luck and please let us know how it works out for ya...

Thanks Sherry I'll keep everyone updated. When the seed pod turns red, that will mean that I was successful

Jananas Bananas

That is very interesting. How did you do it Cameron, with a paint brush? One flower to another on the same plant or what? I still have some blooming maybe I can try it too if you can tell me how. I have wondered why I never see seed pods on them but we do have them inside so the natural pollinators can't get to them, DUH! (a slap on the forehead moment!!!) :ha:

Willow87
12-04-2010, 10:11 PM
Hi Janan. I did both. I mainly cross pollinated but one i used the same plant. I just coated the purple stamen with pollen and i think it takes a year for the pod to ripen. It turns red. I'll have to see if any stay on, which im hoping. I still have plenty of flowers to experiment with.

Willow87
12-04-2010, 10:15 PM
Oh most of the flowers I just rubbed together to get most of the pollen off. I used a paintbrush but the pollen wasnt sticking to the purple stamen too well

The Hollyberry Lady
12-05-2010, 06:41 PM
If you'll notice too Janan, with Thanksgiving cacti, the pollen is everywhere...you just have to handle one in full bloom to see it falling from the flowers. It is even sufficient to just tap the bloom over top of another bloom and then vice versa...making sure the pollen falls on the stamens.

You'll know if it works when the bud begins to swell. ;)

Never known any pod to take a year to mature but if they say so, then maybe it's true. I did the same thing to my African Violets and had total success, but I used a soft paintbrush to bring pollen from one bloom to the other.

Good luck, Cam & Janan! :waving:

Yes, that is mother of thousands. It will grow tiny little babies on the tip of each point (as a lot of them do) and they have the most beautiful bell shaped flowers that just stay on forever! It is one of my favorite succulents. The official name is Kalanchoe daigremontiana 'Leopard Spots'. It's a little more rare than the other varieties. They can get pretty tall, and when my biggest one bloomed the flower stalk was about 6 feet tall. ~J

I knew it looked like leopard spots and so I'm not surprised to hear what it's called.

Wow Janan...I just can't thank you enough! ;)

I love the ones you sent. There was a purple one too that had a long stem on it with roots but the stem was damaged from cold so I cut it off and am trying to root just the tip which appears ok.

I hope it roots because it looks totally awesome. Crappy shot I know, but it's this one, Janan...

What is it?

It looks special to me and the leaves are kind of purple.

Jananas Bananas

There are two that it could be, either Aloe saponaria - commonly called soap aloe - the Indians used the thick juicy sap as soap and shampoo. It has teeth type edges to it. It will turn purple in full sun, reddish in dappled sunlight and green in the shade. It also has gorgeous blooms on stalks that hummingbirds and butterflies just flock to.

Or it could be another Kalanchoe. Did it have any tiny babies attached to the edges? Or maybe down inside where they had fallen off? The edges would be soft on it, not hard teeth like the soap aloe. It has a purple brown color to it, more like the skin of an alligator, and often called the alligator cactus. I sent both and either one could be more purplish from wilting from the cold.

I just can't tell which one it is from the picture. Sorry! ~J

Cool Janan...when it gets going more I'll show it again. It almost didn't make it because the stem was detroyed from cold but the top was just fine. Sure hope it roots for me.

Yes, it is the kalanchoe with the babies on the tips and yes they will all root and grow if they didn't get too much damage from the cold. They start making those babies fairly young and both the leopard spots and the alligator will grow them on the tips. They are the cutest little things. That's why they have the "mother of thousands" nickname.

Did the dragon fruit make it Sherry? I think in one of the threads you said one of them didn't - could you tell which one? I wrote what they were on the newspaper I wrapped them in.

Dean that one dragon fruit that has twisted is really cool looking. I wish mine would twist like that. I guess you are really enjoying that greenhouse about now aren't you? :)

The Hollyberry Lady

It was the dragon fruit labelled "white" that didn't make it Janan...the other 3 did. ;)

I love the succulents you sent! All of them look wonderful. Love the babies growing on the tips, like you do Janan. I noticed them right away. The cutting looks ok and I'm hoping some of it or all of it will root for me. I've got it in a very bright window and it has a good shot of surviving. We'll see...

It seems like from Dean's shot, that dragon fruit wants to lay down so it can root in the soil everywhere! I would like to grow one in the garden next year and let it sprawl everywhere, but bring it in for winter...or at least part of it because it'll likely be so huge! :ha:

Hope I get a few fruits on mine someday! :goteam:

I wanted to show off the different colors I have these in and also the buds. I have five of them that will be blooming soon! :) They are all growing in the same environment outside in front of the house and in full morning sun. These are the succulent Kalanchoe daigremontiana AKA Mother of Thousands. You either love them or hate them - I am a lover.

This is a color I have not found pictured on the internet - it is blue red on top and a darker almost purple on the underside of the leaves (may be a new SPORT and I have two of them so far) and beside it a tannish olive colored one.
<img src= "http://home.flash.net/~jeanann/20110105%20012.JPG"/>

shades of green
<img src= "http://home.flash.net/~jeanann/20110105%20013.JPG"/>

a dark almost black olive color
<img src= "http://home.flash.net/~jeanann/20110105%20016.JPG"/>

the next two pictures are the blue green colors and the Mothers of this color are the ones that are getting ready to bloom
<img src= "http://home.flash.net/~jeanann/20110105%20025.JPG"/>

<img src= "http://home.flash.net/~jeanann/20110105%20028.JPG"/>

Green with yellow edging
<img src= "http://home.flash.net/~jeanann/20110105%20035.JPG"/>

Bud pictures - the stalks of the blossoms are about 3 to 3 1/2 feet tall
<img src= "http://home.flash.net/~jeanann/20110105%20023.JPG"/>

<img src= "http://home.flash.net/~jeanann/20110105%20030.JPG"/>

<img src= "http://home.flash.net/~jeanann/20110105%20031.JPG"/>

Close up of the new babies on the edge
<img src= "http://home.flash.net/~jeanann/20110105%20024.JPG"/>

These are considered invasive in some environments like Florida, but easily controlled in cooler ones. I don't have any problems in mine, but you will have to stay on top of it if you have them in the ground outside in the warmer climates. They make nice houseplants and can be fun for kids as an easy starter plant.

Thanks Sherry! I am really keeping a close eye on this red blue purple one. I want more of them but it's little babies don't develope on the leaf edges like the others do - they start but then srivel up. You can see some on the very tips of the one pictured. I may try taking a leaf off and trying to grow it that way to see if it maintains that color. I suspect that the great color has to do with the amount of full sun it gets as with my other succulents. But you can see the others that are side by side are not that color at all.

Have any of you other succulent lovers seen this color before on this plant?

Here's a fresh picture of the succulent bowl that I made the other day. They are really liking it so far! :)

<img src= "http://home.flash.net/~jeanann/20110105%20004.JPG"/>

Here's one you might really like Bob! It is Agave Americana that I think is crossed with the Blue Tequila that you like. It shows both the blue and green coloring. It is my biggest one which is about 2 1/2 feet tall by 3 1/2 foot wide.

You want MORE? OK. Here is one of my little teeny dwarf orchids that has a bloom open and another bud waiting.

<img src= "http://home.flash.net/~jeanann/20110105%20003.JPG"/>

That big mixed agave has only made one pup so far and I gave it to Cheryl when she came over this summer. I'll be keeping an eye out to share more when it has more babies. :)

This is a smaller succulent bowl I made the same time I made the big one. The succulents in this one are all teeny except for the tri color kalanchoe in the middle. I don't know how big it gets, but it is growing at a much faster rate than the others.

Here's my 'little' agave americana variegated. He's about 4 feet across now in my living room, and attacks my ankles every time I water. :ha:

Thanks guys! I think it is pretty special too! Bob your first on the list and Howard you are second. I will let you all know as soon as I see an inkling of a pup, hopefully when Spring hits!

Here are a couple more variegated agaves that I have. This first one I think is the same as yours Howard. I love the way yours is curling and waving, that looks really cool. My husband calls all these ankle biters! :ha:

This little guy is my favorite of the agaves though. It is very, very white and as you can see from the tag it just says variegata and doesn't look anything like the picture shown.

Yeah there's a flowershop downtown that puts out boxes of their flowers on the side of the road each night, that aren't fresh enough to sell anymore, so people just take them for free.

Gonna try to find some more colorful succulents in Spring and maybe I'll even place an order from somewhere because we just don't have the selection of them that other places seem to have.

Love all your pics Janan. That one with the chocolate tips is wonderful. ;)

Ok....Aloe is a succulent, yes? How do you get the succulents to root from a leaf? I've tried with my aloe and it just doesn't take. One of my 2 plants is now shooting off pups...I've seperated 2 of them in the last week and a third is popping through soil at moms side. I'm hoping that the pups do as well as the mom and auntie.

The Hollyberry Lady
01-20-2011, 04:37 PM
I think with Aloe plants, they're typically propagated by the pups or seeds...not by leaves. That's likely why you didn't have success. ;)

Yup, it's a succulent.

: )

notrecruiting

O.K. so it's not just me. I've read that you can propogate aloe through cuttings. I've just had no success...maybe I'm not using the right methods or soils. Supposedly you just let the cut leaf calouse over and put in well draining soil....didn't work for me. Oh well hopefully mom keeps producing. :)

The Hollyberry Lady
01-20-2011, 05:59 PM
Very interesting and I am not surprised to learn about this. Succulents are some of the most easiest plants to root.

Try not burying the cutting so deeply so it doesn't rot before it roots, as is common sometimes with succulent snipets.

This is a neat looking succulent I found a couple of weeks ago. It grows very symmetrically and in a spiral if that makes any sense.

You say not to bury so deep...so just kind-of set it barely into the soil and prop against the side of the pot or something? I haven't tried any other succulents to know but the aloe leaves all seem to go brown and rot in the soil before they root so maybe the shallower buriel will help. I still think they're meant to propegate from pups though.

The Hollyberry Lady
01-21-2011, 08:53 AM
Yeah I think propagation from pups & seeds is likely more typical but rooting cuttings is still possible as well.

Sometimes when I try to root succulent cuttings, I'm careful to only bury the ends, and then about a 1/4 of the cutting's length beneath the soil, to prevent rotting before rooting. Depends on the type though because other's love to be buried deeply and don't seem to mind.

The cutting should still be able to stand up on it's own though without having to be propped up. Moistening the medium should help, but I always use an extremely well draining soil to ward off rot as well.

Good Luck!

Here's a succulent that's very special to me because it came as two little stubby sticks, sent to me by a gardening friend in Turkey!!!

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC01675.jpg

Thanks Sherry!

My little doggy tail cactus looks a lot like your big one from Turkey. Do you know the name?

I have had better luck basically just laying the succulent leaves on top of the growing medium and misting rather than watering. Even my Thanksgiving cactus joints grow better this way for me. The babies come up very teeny tiny and the "parent" leaf withers. By the time the leaf is totally withered the baby has made it's own roots and you can throw the withered leaf away. ~J

Thanks, it's called a free plant from a neighbor! :ha: I really have no idea what it is.

We accepted it and take care of it because the color matches the front porch bench pillows and it doesn't take too much space on our tiny porch area. Thank you. :)

Yes, you have it. Yes, it is Mother of Thousands - Kalanchoe daigremontiana. The one that has the spotting on the stem of the bloom is "Leopard Spots" (I believe the 1st, 4th, and 5th picture).

The blooms are gorgeous and last for months. Butterflies and hummingbirds flock to them. They are elongated bell shaped blooms. I think I will have salmon, dark pink, and light pink blooms this year.

I think my red purple sport that I have been watching, is fairly cold hardy. Here is a picture of it today, you can see the one beside it has sriveled up in the cold, but it still looks good.

Those bloom stalks are about three to three and a half feet tall too Sherry! I had one in the house last year that was six feet tall with blooms on it. I had to stake it because it was so tall. I really love them. As soon as I show you the blossom pictures you will know why.

I'm in complete shock about that mother of a thousand plant you sent me...3-5 feet flower
stalks?!!! :eek: I had no idea. How totally and utterly cool. :08:

I already think it's beautiful now but can only imagine when the blooms open! Please be sure to show us.

Too funny about me having 'green hands'! :ha: LoL.

I sent you a purple bromeliad also. Did it make it? I don't think I ever heard you say. It was a small pup, so I'm sure it was tender. I think I wrote a list of everything I sent you, but I don't know where I put it. :ha:

Guess what I found today? This one is Bob's!

Nope, unfortunately the bromliad didn't make it. :( Sadly the ones that looked super cool all died on me...due to the jack-asses at the post office! :ha:

One of the flowers has opened fully on the Mother of Thousands. It will last a long time and they will eventually all be open at the same time when the others catch up, but I wanted to show off the first one. You can see the one in the background is absolutely loaded with blossoms, but none have developed any color to the buds yet.

Thanks for covering my butt.

Anyway, I think it is the best looking Aloe I have ever seen for sure!

Sherry, this is Leopard Spots that has turned a deep purple because of the cold. You may want to experiment with a couple of yours to see if you can change the color with your temperature outside for a few minutes a day or something.

This spring and summer filtered light and keep the soil slightly moist. Likes to be kinda rootbound. When the blooms come you will know it ...Totally different than the leaves and branches. 1/2 strength Miracle Gro for flowering plants. It looks to me to be big enough to flower this year. Let me know if you have any questions. I have been growing this plant for about 20 yrs.

Drew my zone is 8b - 9a which they should change maybe, I don't know. But I usually don't have to do anything to them. We had record breaking lows (that stood from back in the 1920's) and longer than normal. So it took a toll on a bunch of my plants. These always bloom in late fall early winter, and the blooms last until late spring. So it is nice to have something flowering this time of year. I had never noticed the color change on the young ones until this year either. This cold nearly wiped out my soap aloe and a couple of my blue agave too. I just have too many things to try and cover everything up or even worse dig them up. Bah! I hate cold weather! ~J

Even though I am very jealous of Mitchel's shots, I will continue to post my mediocre ones in comparison...oh mister fancy camera!!! :ha:

I wanted to show JaNan how much more pink her 'morning lights' cuttings are tonight, under the grow light...

Here's the Mother of Thousands that I put in the garage. It isn't as filled with flowers as the others were, but it is still pretty.

You'll have to play around with your aero-garden and put pieces of your succulents under the lights while you're waiting for germination, JaNan. They start to color-up quickly. :D

Pretty flowers, by the way! ;)

Here's a little succulent pot that I have right beside the AeroGarden, can you see those super cute little teeny babies coming up off of some leaves that have fallen off the stalk?

This is one of my very favorite special plants, my vanilla orchid. It is doing something different and think it may be getting ready to flower. Maybe it is just making a new baby plant (keiki) but I am not sure. Anyway, this looks kind of like a calla lily bloom to me. :lurk: I'll be keeping a close eye on it.

Nope, no bloom, no keiki (vanilla doesn't make keikis, just more vine branches); just another stem section.

How do I know? I've bloomed a few...

Oh YAY! I was hoping one of our orchid experts would chime in here (I'm the first to admit I don't know anything about them - I just love the way they look!!!::))! I've read your posts - I know you know what you are talking about. That's OK. I love its look and am glad it is growing and doing something!!!! I really like the way the new branch and leaves are curling around. It looks different than the other leaves. I can separate it from this stem without hurting the main vine can't I Yug? It has it's own roots. I don't want to do it at the expense of my main vine. Or should I wait until it is larger? This is not outside yet, so it only has a small stake to hang on. Please let me know what you think. Thanks an bunch!

'Expert' may be overly generous, :08: but experienced is more accurate. I don't cut sections away from the main vine unless there are at least three nodes with leaves and roots, and I want them at least 1 1/2 ft long (longer is better). Don't just bury the end in potting mix, make sure that the lowest roots will be in some contact with the moisture in the mix. This stimulates them to elongate, and put out small root hairs that will pull the moisture in. Unless the mix is VERY open, the roots will never penetrate it (not necessarily a bad thing), but will grow and circle around the inside of the pot so they are still in contact with the top layer of the potting mix. As long as they have some moisture contact, this is sufficient. I don't use potting soil for vanilla, I prefer something more like the pre-mixed cymbidium potting media - retains some moisture, but is still partially open. By 'open' I mean that it will absorb a small amount of moisture while allowing good air penetration, and most water passes through.

(sorry it took so long to respond, but the site was flaky, and so was my www connection)

My pink lace cactus survived the winter outside (well with the exception of some that I had in a pot that would not drain (they were literally submerged in water). Heres a pic of one of the ones that survived...

I think I've figured out what's going on here with my cactus leaves being colored. I noticed my white Thanksgiving cactus has a purple tinge to the leaves also...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC02626.jpg

...and Cam's white cactus has buds on it!!!...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC02629.jpg

It's because all of the cacti are kept in a cool window sill and some of the leaves are pressed up against the very cold glass, so this is the reason the leaves are colored. :D

So pretty though, and amazing that Cam's plant is going to bloom! :eek:
