Here's a good size long needle cactus on my front fence line. The longest needles are as long or longer than my fingers. I guess it is another kind of Prickly Pear and growing new pads for Spring.

I got this beautiful succulent as a cutting from a gardener pal in Turkey. It's green but it turns purple. I noticed it has developed these big buds that look like they will bloom soon...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC03472.jpg
The branches really turn a dark shade of purple as they age...

If you like it JaNan, I'll send you some branches. ;)

Hey JaNan,
Looks like the Prickly pears would benefit from some Horticultural oil. The scale that is on them will soon be a problem of the past!

That is very cool looking Sherry! AND it is purple!!! :woohoonaner: I am anxious to see what the bloom looks like.
Thanks Drew, for the hint - but I really hope the scale kills it. I don't like it and I really try to ignore it.
Here is my Mother of Thousands still blooming!

Yes, I'm anxious to see the bloom on my purple succulent from my friend in Turkey too. We were both shocked it even survived the trip, and now look at it!!! I'll be sure to show a pic as soon as one of those buds bursts open...

Yup, that's what it is...as soon as I read it, I remembered. Tugrul will get back to my email soon I'm sure, and will be telling me that name again. Thanks though JaNan. What a beauty! :D
I really was pleasantly surprised by it today and couldn't believe how pretty it was. I'll send ya some good branches for sure. It grows really easily and quickly too. There are more buds forming all over it so it's obviously going into full bloom! :D
Funny how looks can be so deceiving because when the cuttings first arrived, they were just 2 or 3 little green stubby branches that weren't too appealing. I had to grow them though, since my friend went to so much trouble and they arrived alive and all. I cannot believe the beautiful specimen this plant has grown into, in my east living room window.
Thanks JaNan. I can't wait to send you some. Have to wait a bit yet though...it's snowing here today!
Happy Spring!

I can't wait to share it with you Cam. ;)
It makes your mom itch...really? Is she allergic to it or something?
When I send you guys the cuttings, just poke the ends in well-draining moist soil and place in east light. They root as quick as any other succulent does and they thrive in a pot.
I'm still in shock at discovering that gorgeous bloom today. I was already loving the plant as it turned purple, but now those flowers have made me think it's totally cool and amazing. What a pretty flower that is.
You guys will get some good branches from me very soon. :D

I'm so glad they are flowers. I've never seen the flowers of prickly pear up close. I dont know the color of the flowers though. Funny because it was a half dead and pathetic looking thing when I bought it in late Fall and now look at it! :D So glad I picked it up and looking forward to the blooms. I have a feeling they'll be so pretty.
I like the shape of the leaves too, Cam. It's so much different than the thanksgiving cacti, that's for sure. Even how hairy the leaves are when they first grow, is so cool.

I actually saw some in a combination planter at Lowe's last week Sherry! The blooms were a dark hot pink on the ones they used. They also had the hot pink icicle plant a couple of small cactus and aloe and one even had haworthia. It was a large beautiful planter but I think they were $40 or so.
Are the hairy pieces new growth? I can tell the red ones are. I love it with all the color in it like that!
I have some new red leaves coming out on my Thanksgiving cactus, it looks pretty too!

They'll look better once they grow to full size and make their own chicks. I'll probably post another blog by that time.
Another great thing about sempervivums aside from the absolute cold-hardiness is that all of them are growing in regular ground soil without fertilization, and they still do very well.

I would love to send you some cuttings of both sedums Sherry. You will just have to tell me how to pack them and what to send them in? How many stamps would I need to buy also?
The Hollyberry Lady
05-08-2011, 11:01 PM
I was thinking you could just send them in an empty pill bottle, so they won't get crushed. Then you put that in a bubble wrap envelope and take it to the post office for them to tell you how many stamps to put on it.
It should only cost 2-3 bucks.

My sempervivum seed mix is starting to germinate today, less than 1 week of planting them and I have some pretty high hopes for these guys. Many of my newly acquired cuttings from SMG succulents are also sending out chicks so by the end of this season I should have a pretty good collection.
I'll have an update on my blog about the sempervivums once the seedlings become distinguishable.

How did you guess? I think they just flower on any bitty piece to be honest. I even had them flowering in a pot under a Cycas.
On Tenerife they are on volcanic type soil, but have auto watering sysem running. They are in every corner of the Crazy Golf, hard to Imagine the spread.

I saw a faded bloom in your picture lol.I was having a hard time seeing the color in the picture so I was curious. I got my cuttings from a friend who has them in clay soil. Hers stayed outside all winter in the sleet and snow and in freezing temperatures. So its definitely hardy in my zone (8a) I read that its hardy to zone 5a so I may plant it in the ground.

Ooooooh I could'nt risk it,
Last winter was extremely cruel where I live. We used to have no more than -1 at one time, last winter saw us with -13 in a sheltered backgarden. I even had icicles on a fleece bag.
Luckily I had the palm triple wrapped due to knowing what was coming. The hard Trachicarpus fortunei, forget. It it pulled at -13...I never wrapped it as it was supposed to be very hardy.
I never wrapped the English version of Cordyline (none tropical) was washing up in the kitchen and saw it in spring just lay down .:ha::ha: So much for hardy.

OK, I need some help here guys. It was in a group of succulents that I have pictured previously, and none were labeled. They were just listed on the label as "Water Conserving Plants". I think this first one is Hatiora gaertneri which I believe the common name is Easter or Spring cactus:
http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/n580/JaNan16/20110525032.jpg
Now this one is labeled as a "Sunrise Cactus" which is a registered trademark name and its blooms burst open each day with the rays of the morning sunrise and the sunlike flowers of the Sunriseฎ Cactus also close at the end of each day after sunset. They say it is Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri and native to Brazil and South American jungles and live on trees like certain orchids. This one is also called Easter and Spring cactus though not like the first one at all.
http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/n580/JaNan16/20110525030.jpg
These are close ups of the seed pods which I will share if anyone is interested in them. I do not know if they will produce or anything yet. I believe these pods will turn yellow as they "ripen".
http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/n580/JaNan16/20110525029.jpg
I have been Googling trying to learn more about these, but I am not for sure I have correctly named the first one. It is much thicker and has more of an upright growth to it than the Zygo related ones. I am hoping some of you that are more familiar with them can help me. Thanks!

Wow I thought you lived in a tropical climate from your pics.
Iwish Willow, we get those plants (small Ice plants) from Tenerife. The palms you buy online. I recently bought a lovely Fir.
That's really cold.
The icicles that fell from the shed roof in the winter sun froze as soon as it hit the fleece :ha:
And Willow stay clear of those very long icicles I heard a man died last year, it stabbed his neck.
I think the lowest it got here this winter may have been 11 F.
You luicky sugar lolol So while England froze, and turned up the heating, you were almost sweating your cods off.
Your palm is beautiful. What temperature is it hardy to? Thats so sad what happened to your plant. I lost quite a few things that were suppose to be hardy this year lol
Cycas are not too softies to be honest, look after them and they do ok. Its the Canary Island date Palm thats more suseptable to cold. Mind you if you have a large conservatory then your good to go.
You can also grow palms as a home plant.
Janas, I believe you plant is a Plumera, well lol its caudex looks like a Plumera.
OK here is a new one I just got a couple of days ago and I just LOVE this thing.

Mine flower reliably each summer. Many people make the mistake of hardly watering during the summer. Water as for any blooming plant. During winter (for me, inside) I water sparingly. I'd love a variegated one. There are so many flower types now, you could specialize solely in obesums!

It appears that the variegated part has been grafted in, and that the growth with the solid green leaves is coming from the natural base of the plant. In my experience, the green leaf, being the natural branch, will become stronger to the point that all the grafted in pieces will eventually be starved for nutrients from the rest of the plant, and will eventually die. If it was my plant, I'd chop the green branch off completely, and I'd also chop any new branches that crop up below the graft. I've seen fruit trees with grafted branches that will do precisely as I've described - the natrual branch will receive all the strength from the root-stock, and all the grafts will eventually be sloughed off and die. The problem can be 'nipped-in-the-bud' if you act quickly, if not I'd bet my next paycheck that you will lose the variegated parts.
The Hollyberry Lady
06-23-2011, 07:41 AM
JaNan, Yug's advice is good, and I think you should do exactly what he has suggested. ;)
I've read about this many times and it's recommended you remove the original growth of the rootstock coming from the base and below the graft, so the grafted plant will thrive. :)
I know you'll hate doing it but get out those shears and snip, snip, snip! :ha:

Wow Jordan those look great! The plant that you got from ShearMe is Drimiopsis kirkii. I got the same plant from him last year. I had someone ID it for me last year because it looked much different from my Pregnant onion plant. I think the common name is Giant Squill
jreidsma
10-15-2011, 11:57 AM
Janan, you sent me some spoon tomatoe seeds, but no micro toms. And yes, the haworthia I posted the picture of is the one you sent me :) It is doing pretty good. The only thing that didn't make it was the little prince banana. It didn't like the cold weather we where having.
The now mystery plants (what I called pregnant onions) kind of look like the Drimiopsis kirkii. But they aren't quite as speckled and they are growing a bit differently then what that plant looks like. I am not saying these aren't, but for now I might just let them grow then worry about it later. Them only having a couple leaves makes it hard to ID them. I just did the trade earlier this year and was told they where pregnant onions, but I have never seen a speckled pregnant onion either. Maybe after a couple more months of growth they will looks like something and then we will know for sure. They are starting to root nicely and should start growing faster now. It took them quite a while to even make roots.
Yes Janan, I think the same thing then see people with jungles :ha: Not everyone has that much room though :)

Mine was neglected through winter and I put it outdoors and forgot about it. I set it behind some large containers and when I was moving them around I noticed it had produced 2 babies. I was so happy, but it seems like its a slow grower. The babies caught up with the mother plant lol

I really need to learn more about cactus. I have no idea what this one is. It looks like a giant christmas cactus, it has a few spines on it, and my momma plant that I do cuttings from is in a 12" basket, huge and probably weighs 50 lbs. It hangs down at least 3' and about that wide too. needless to say it's getting lots of cuttings done this spring just to manage it! I have about 8 8" baskets of it going for spring. Since momma plant was so full, I put about 12 cuttings per basket. You can't tell I did anything to it now though.
I'll take a picture of it and post it, maybe you all can tell me more about it, though.
I used to have a pink one like it and a white one, but they were shy bloomers, not crazy to bloom like this one, so I let them go.
Do you all have the yellow christmas cactus? I have a few of it, but I don't think they're really all that yellow. more of a peach/orange color in my opinion.

What color are the flowers on your Thanksgiving cactus Janan? I'm still waiting for my larger TC to produce buds, its still outside. Sandy I want to grow mine in hanging baskets but I don't have enough tree limbs outside to put them on and indoors I don't have any of the hooks. I live ina mobile home so the ceiling is so much different than a regular house. I had a yellow Thanksgiving cactus but it slowly declined so I sent the rest of it to a friend. I'm going to see if I can find it again. I think the heat made it decline. The yellow variety seems more tender. I had to go to 3 different stores to find a yellow one. Here is a picture of the yellow one I gave up. The flowers started out peach/pink and once the flower opened it turned yellow

I was actually exploring a kind of wooded area, but yes it was growing wild. I got some cuttings of it for us. I guess the red is fruit. I don't know if it is edible or not, but I sure would like to see the flowers. I haven't found it yet googleing (is that a word?). Anyway, I thought it was really pretty. The stems or whatever you would call them on a cactus were about the size of a wooden pencil. The fruit about the size of a thimble. There were small and large sizes of it - height and width, still skinny branched.

Mine are getting so close and they are full of buds, even the small ones! I think these are all different colors - I am not sure if the largest plant is yellow or white yet, it was one I bought after it bloomed for a couple of dollars, but either way I will love it! These were all outside all summer, then I brought them inside when freezes threatened. Though the plants aren't perfect (something took to chewing on some of them) it certainly has made them tougher plants! The buds don't drop off when I move them like they do when I bring them home from the box stores and the leaves and stems are much firmer - not floppy at all.

Those are beautiful Janan. My red one didn't bloom this year but it put out a lot of growth and the plant looks very lush and full. Hopefully next year It will bloom.

Beautiful Thanksgiving cacti, Janan!
Ok so here are the little pink buds on my Jade plant!!! They're plastered all over the plant...

I'll show them again when they open. A few already did but I missed getting the shot before they dropped. I will soon.

Very cool :) How big is the whole plant? I have never heard of one flowering indoors like that, maybe mine will when they get bigger. :)

I thought it was pretty special that it bloomed too, Jordan. The plant started out as stubby little cuttings from a garden pal in Oklahoma. It's now 2 years old and 8-10 inches tall. It's rootbound too.

Found out recently that my "Agave" that was in bloom, is actually an Aloe! I look forward to it blooming again!

Hi Drew. Yes I mentioned that in post #419. I believe it is an Aloe Aristata, the blooms look right! :)

Those pink buds sure are pretty! And that sticks on fire looks so thick. I always thought they were a spindly looking cactus, but not yours of course Sherry! :ha:

Very nice, Janan!
Keep in mind there were 10 cuttings in one pot and Bob gave them to me a year ago. The sticks have grown considerably since then, but they were kind of spindly for awhile there.
I should have turned the pot around because the side that's facing the window and the sunshine has some sticks that have turned that beautiful red/peach color!

Those are really pretty delicate little blooms on your jade Sherry!
Here's a yellow Thanksgiving cactus (at first I thought this was going to be pink because the buds look pink):
